Assignment Title: Database Implementation

Scenario:

The Cooper’s Arms Hotel are satisfied with the design produced for their relational database solution
and are now ready for you to implement the database and include in it forms, queries and reports.

Tasks

1) Implement the Database Design provided with this brief into MS Access.

a) Implement the tables in table design view applying appropriate data types, field lengths
and any required validation rules supported with validation text.
b) Create relationships between the tables.
c) Populate the tables with data as per the guidance sheet provided on the VLE

Submit screenshots of:

 Each table in data sheet view with the required data included
 The database relationship window

This provides evidence for Learning Outcome 4.1

2) Implement and Test queries in your database to extract the following information:

1) A list of the rooms that cost less than £40 per night
2) A list of the bookings, and the guests they were for, between two dates that are chosen
by the user.
3) Display the most expensive extra a guest can order on their booking.
4) Details of the bookings, guests and rooms allocated for the arrivals due within the next 7
days.
5) Display the total cost of each booking before any extras are added on.
6) List all the bookings that were made during the current month.
7) All room type prices are going up by 5%. Create a query that will update all the records in
the appropriate table to reflect this increase.
8) Display (with a sensible heading) the total number of bookings handled by each employee
during this year to date.

Submit:
 A screenshot of each query in design view
 A screenshot of the actual output for each query

This provides evidence for Learning Outcome 4.3

3) Create professional, formal reports based on queries 4 and 8 above.

This provides evidence for Learning Outcome 4.4

4) Create user entry forms that will allow the database user to view, record new and update
existing records:

 Customer Records
 Low Stock Records
 Booking Records – to include the extras ordered. (As you create this form record and
screenshot the errors you get – as this will help you provide evidence of test errors – see Task
5

Submit
 Screenshots of the three forms displaying valid table data

This provides evidence for Learning Outcome 4.2

On completion of the tasks above,

Upload your database onto the VLE to obtain a tutor witness statement to confirm that your
database has been implemented correctly with the required features.

5)
a) Test the functionality of the booking form you created above in Task 4 above and provide
evidence of error detection and correction within the test documentation.
b) Write a short statement of recommendations of how the database you have created
could be improved. (Appx 300 words)

Submit
 Test Plan, Test Results, Re-test Document following error detection.
 Recommendation for improvements to database.
