Hello _______________,

The Grinnell Middle School Science Department is on the quest for engineers to engage with
our students prior to our Engineering Fair in January. After meeting with engineers in the field,
students will choose a real world problem and will be asked to develop a solution. A visit from
engineers from organizations like yours would be a great Kick-Off to our event. The purpose of
having engineers visit with our students is to help them understand the endless possibilities of
engineering and get a feeling for what the job entails. With your help, the plan is to have this
Kick-Off on December 19th. Please let us know if you have any engineers who would be willing
to join us in inspiring our students to think like an engineer.

Hello,

We, the science department, at Grinnell Middle School are looking for "real life" engineers to come to the
school on December 19 to talk to 5th-8th grade students about what an engineer does. This will be the kick off
for our Engineering Fair. We will be working through the design process: Defining a problem that needs to be
solved, background research about what is already known, planning and designing, building a prototype,
testing the prototype and finally sharing our results.

We are wondering if you or if you know of someone would that would be interested in coming to talk on
December 19.

You could talk about anything related to engineering that you wanted to. Your talk could be 15 minutes to an
hour long!

A few ideas that we came up with to talk about are:

● What kind of engineer are you?

● What does your day-to-day activity look like?
● What being an engineer means to you?
● How do you use the design process?
● Do you have examples that you can share or ideas that you have invented
● Do you have plans/drawings that you can share with students?
● Can you talk about how a prototype needs to be tested and improved upon many times?
● Can you talk about something you or your company made and how you worked through the design
process, as mentioned above?
The goal is to show students all about engineering in the real-world to expose them to a possible job career
and get them excited to work on their engineering fair!

Thank you

Hello! My name is __________________ and I am a science teacher at Grinnell Middle School.
This year we are hosting an engineering fair at our school. To “kick off” our fair we are looking
for engineers to come to our school to speak about the endless possibilities of engineering and
get a feeling for what the job entails. A visit from engineers from an organization like yours
would be a great addition to our Kick-Off event. With your help, the plan is to have this Kick-Off
on December 19th. Do you know of anyone in your organization who might be interested in
helping us with this? wai

Possible Topics for Engineer to discuss:

● What kind of engineer are you?
● What does your day-to-day activity look like?
● What does being an engineer mean to you?
● How do you use the design process?
● Examples of props that you may have that you can share or ideas that you have
invented.

Response:
● Where do you work/what kind of engineer are you?
● What kind of problems do you encounter in your field and how do you solve them?
● Do you have an example that you could share with the students?
