Gust Effect Factor, G and Gf
 Guest Effect Factors depend on whether a building is Rigid
or Flexible (ASCE 6.5.8).
 Fundamental natural frequency n1 greater than or equal 1 is
Rigid Building.
 Fundamental natural frequency n1 less than 1 is Flexible
Building. (ASCE 6.2)
 Fundamental natural frequency n1 = 1/ Ta
 So, approximate fundamental period Ta is determined
according to ASCE 12.8.2 & 12.8.2.1

Nyan Hein ( Founder of Dynamics Structural Design & Inspection)

Nyan Hein ( Founder of Dynamics Structural Design & Inspection)
 For n1≥1.0 Hz(Rigid Buildings), G is 0.85 or by
using following ASCE equation.
 For simplicity, G is taken as 0.85.

 For n1<1.0 Hz(Flexible Buildings), Gf is calculated
by using following ASCE equation.

 I z̅ = intensity of turbulence at height z̅, from

following ASCE equation and ASCE Table 6.2.

each exposure in ASCE Table 6.2.

 Q = Background Response, is calculated from
following ASCE Equation and Table 6.2

 B = horizontal dimension of building measured normal to

wind direction, in ft (m).
 h = mean roof height of a building or height of other
structure, except that eave height shall be used
for roof angle B of less than or equal to loo, in
ft (m).

Resonant Response Factor (R)

 β=damping ratio (assumed to be 0.01 i.e., 1% of

critical damping.
 Rn can be calculated from following equation,

Where, N1= Reduced Frequency.

V̅ z̅ = mean hourly wind speed at height
z̅, from following equation.

 We can find Rh, RL, RB from the following equation and
rules & thumbs.

Enclosure Classification.
 For the purpose of determining internal pressure
coefficients GCpi , all buildings shall be classified as
enclosed, partially enclosed or open as defined as following
ASCE Figure 6-5.

Nyan Hein ( Founder of Dynamics Structural Design & Inspection)

Internal Pressure Coefficient ( GCpi )
 According to ASCE section 6.5.11.1, internal pressure
coefficient are to be determined from ASCE Figure 6.5
based on building enclosure classification.

External Pressure Coefficient, Cp
 External pressure coefficient for MWFRSs are given in
following ASCE Figures 6-6 to 6-8.
