DIFFUSION DEFINITION
The movement of molecules from
an area in which they are highly
concentrated to a area in which
they are less concentrated

small area and diffuse

OSMOSIS
OSMOSIS DEFINITION
Process where molecules pass through a semi-
permeable membrane from an area of high
concentration to an area of lower
concentration, thereby equalizing the
concentrations on each side. This process
happens in a liquid
SELECTIVELY-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE

A barrier that allows

certain materials to
pass through it and
doesn’t allow others

EXPERIMENT
• STEP #1: On a blank page, write “Iodine Osmosis
Experiment” as a title

• STEP #2: Write “Materials” as a sub heading and list the

materials on the next slide
MATERIALS
• One beaker
• Starch solution (15-20ml of starch per 500ml of
water)
• Iodine (indicator)
• Pipet
• Clear plastic ziplock bag
• Ruler
• Tape
HOW WILL WE
KNOW IF
DIFFUSION HAS
OCCURRED?

EXPERIMENT
PREDICT O B S E RV E

• Record a detailed prediction • What is happening to the

of what you believe will iodine?
happen during this • What is happening to the
experiment. starch mixture?
• Use scientific language: • Is anything changing? Think
diffusion, osmosis, selectively- about your senses
permeable membrane, etc.
EXPERIMENT
EXPLAIN
• STEP #3: Record a DETAILED explanation of exactly what you did
to set up this experiment. You may record it step-by-step or in
proper sentence/paragraph form

• STEP #4: Finally, record, using scientific language, a highly detailed

explanation of what you observed. Also, include a scientific
description of what happened using words such as: iodine, starch
solution, indicator, selectively permeable membrane, osmosis,
diffusion. Think about: what did the ziplock bag act as?

Cells can use______ as a way of getting important
_______ in and out of them. Diffusion is particularly
useful as it _______ require any _______.To get into a
cell, particles have to pass through a __________
membrane. This is only good for _________
molecules, though, like oxygen and carbon dioxide.
FILL IT IN!
Cells can use osmosis as a way of getting important
molecules in and out of them. Diffusion is
particularly useful as it doesn’t require any energy.
To get into a cell, particles have to pass through a
selectively-permeable membrane.This is only
good for small molecules, though, like oxygen and
carbon dioxide.
WHY IS THIS
IMPORTANT FOR
CELLS?
SO, WHY IS OSMOSIS IMPORTANT?

Without osmosis, our cells would just

NOT work. They wouldn’t be able to
get nutrients or water.They ALSO
wouldn’t be able to get rid of their
waste.
