Please join us for SPLEEN, an art experience by multi-media installation artist ART CARGO (Jacqueline
Levine), sculptor Oreen Cohen, and ceramicist Sarah Allison.
Over the course of the month they have invaded the vacant retail space in The Moderno building (12th and U
Streets NW), video documenting their creative process. SPLEEN examines mankind’s destructive effect on the
environment and, in turn, the environment’s reaction to life itself. Tension builds between the convergence of
ruptured human debris and a cataclysmic engine that ignites infestation from inside the vessel’s core.
Show continues Friday and Saturday, October 1st and 2nd, 5:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m..

First Friday Openings are a collaborative effort to strengthen arts and culture in the
beautiful, multi-cultural neighborhood that is Dupont Circle. On the First Friday of every
month galleries in our community open their doors to multitudes of art enthusiasts from
all walks of life for simultaneous openings. We encourage all to join us for our openings
and to circulate between our neighboring galleries, which host an ever-changing array of
styles and media.
At Hillyer Art Space First Fridays you will find a diverse cross-section of DC's artistic milieu, with
an audience comprised of all ages that is representative of the multi-cultural neighborhood in
which we are situated. Hillyer First Fridays are always complimented by a special musical
element, provided either by a DJ or live musician to enhance the ambience. FF is the best way to
end the week and the perfect pre-game to a weekend of adventure!
Hillyer Art Space and Project Andini are pleased to announce Puzzling (a) Space, a site-specific
exhibition of painting, installation, video and performance by four contemporary Asian artists:
Soun Hong (Korean), Chakraphan Rangaratna (Thai), Ding Ren (Chinese American), and Eric De
Leon Zamuco (Filipino). This exhibition is co-curated by Jeong-ok Jeon (Korean) and Jammie Chang
(Taiwan), and as a collaborative project it will bring dynamic cultural perspectives to the District
arts community and increase cultural exchange between Asia and the U.S.
Puzzling (a) Space begins with the concept of site-specific art, the notion that an artwork comes
to life within the exhibition space and an audience's participation is similarly an essential
component to the artworks' realization. The place is not just a backdrop or a simple space to
contain the artwork. Rather, the place conveys the purpose and acts as a vehicle for the art, just
as the audience's interaction acts as a catalyst. Thus the artwork will only be complete in the
context of three contributing elements: the artist, the place, and the audience.

For Maria Margarita Panas, an abstract painting is not unlike a novel. The work
acquires a life of its own which unfolds as she allows the characters (color, line,
texture, perspective, mood) to develop a plot, create relationships, change, twist,
turn, until the painting reaches its natural conclusion. She insinuates a not-too-
apparent meaning in her work, wanting each viewer to grasp or suspect something
beneath the surface that lingers in his or her mind. When the work is finished, it
should make a statement.
Panas’s genre definitely proceeds from the “action painting” of the abstract
expressionists of the 40’s and 50’s. The complexity, clarity and courage of this work
has always excited her. “Action Painting has always been my forte. This series is
heavily influenced by the Gutai Group of Japanese artists. I was always heading in
the direction of unrestrained movement and color but seeing their work set me
free” explains Panas. The visual language, applied spontaneously, usually requires
long periods of thought, observation and reworking to create a satisfactory image.
Therein lies the pleasure of painting: physical application and mental arrangement
of material on a canvas, both body and mind totally involved.
Margaret has been a practicing artist since 2002 and is a member of both The Art
League of Alexandria, VA and The Capitol Hill Art League of Washington DC. She is
also a member of the Columbia Pike Artist Studio.

Gowri Koneswaran is a poet, singer, and lawyer whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from Sri Lanka. She was a
Lannan Fellow of the Folger Shakespeare Library and has been a featured poet at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium
Stage and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Her poetry has appeared in Bourgeon and is forthcoming in Beltway
Poetry Quarterly. She was a member of the 2010 DC Southern Fried Slam team and serves as the program director
at BloomBars, a community arts space in Columbia Heights, where she hosts Poetry in the Morning and co-hosts The
Garden open mic. Gowri is also the founder of The AlternaGirls. Information on her upcoming performances can be
found at her blog, Not Here Long. She is excited to be opening for Alif Laila.
In partnership with SAALT as part of Be The Change Day, a national day of service.
This is our 6th year of partnership with Alif and we are excited to have her back with us this Fall. Gracious and
talented, she serves as a role model and mentor to Daniel. Alif Laila was born and raised in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Her
connection with the arts has been very deep since early childhood. In Dhaka, Bangladesh, she began her initial
training in vocal music, and was eventually inspired to learn the Sitar by her mother, Shehida.
Alif was trained on a ‘one to one’ basis in the techniques and compositions of classical music by Ustad Mir Qasem
Khan, nephew of Ustad Allauddin Khan, and founder of the Senia Maihar school of music. Alif’s passion for the arts
was beyond music alone. She attended the College of Fine Arts in Dhaka where she graduated with a Bachelor’s
degree and received several awards for her water color paintings. The world of rhythm and tone in drawing and
painting gradually merged with her music and her love story with the arts began. Alif is very humbled to be able to
use her music as offering for peace and is excited to open Dakshina's Festival.
Turkish Festival
Freedom Plaza
Washington, DC 20004
The Festival brings together a wide range of artists and more than 15,000 Washingtonians in an environment that
fosters intellectual curiosity and leads to engaging interactions, all while enjoying Turkish food and coffee, browsing
and shopping at the Turkish Bazaar, and watching mesmerizing stage performances.
This year's festival will adopt the theme, "Explore the Wonders of Turkey in the Heart of DC", and will take visitors
on a journey through two continents and thousands of years of rich history. Festival attendees will be able to leave
their worries behind and feel as if they have traveled across oceans and through time.
The Bazaar culture is engraved in the Turkish way of life. The color, the variety, the noise, the crowd, the bargaining
and all the chaos of the market place is an irreplaceable part of the Turkish culture. A leisurely afternoon spent
exploring the bazaar, touching and feeling the items on display, bargaining for purchases and then sitting in one of
the cafés with friends and having a cup of strong Turkish coffee or tea is very common among the Turks. Bazaars are
the most common stops to shop for important events such as the weddings, celebrations, and big family gatherings,
but they are also useful for daily and random needs. For this reason, it is not surprising that one of the oldest and
largest indoors markets in the world is located in Istanbul. Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar is a massive labyrinth of 4,000
shops lining up the flanks of 58 covered streets and has between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. It is known for
its jewelry, pottery, spices, and carpet shops. The bazaar contains two "bedestens" (domed masonry structures built
for storage and safe keeping), the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Sultan
Mehmed the Conqueror.
Why is it that every time Republicans lose the presidency someone predicts the death of conservatism?
After President Barack Obama’s victory in 2008, a chorus of pundits heralded the demise of the Right. Yet,
each time conservative Republicans have been rejected by voters, conservatism has revived itself,
rethought its positions, and reorganized its political platform and profile. Are we on the cusp of such a
rebirth? A month before the November 2 midterm elections, the most anticipated and important in a
generation, Gregory L. Schneider of Emporia State University will showcase historical examples of
conservative revivals.

Introduction: ARTHUR C. BROOKS, AEI
Benjamin Friedman
Research Fellow in Defense and Homeland Security Studies,
Cato Institute
and
Christopher Preble
Director of Foreign Policy Studies, Cato Institute
The United States needs a defense budget worthy of its name, and a strategy that protects Americans
rather than wasting vast sums embroiling us in controversies remote from our interests. Christopher
Preble and Benjamin Friedman will discuss their new paper outlining the substantial cuts in military
spending that a strategy of restraint allows. That strategy discourages the occupation of failing states
and indefinite commitments to defend healthy ones. With fewer missions the military can shrink its
force structure — reducing personnel, the weapons and vehicles procured for them, and operational
costs — without sacrificing security. Chairman Frank will discuss his recent efforts to gather bipartisan
support for military spending cuts and a reevaluation of our commitments to defend wealthy allies.
Please join us as we discuss this timely issue.

Internet video can be a powerful tool for filmmakers, providing a means to reach a large and diverse
audience. But in many ways, producing and distributing online video is still a big experiment. What
style and aesthetics work online? How are web viewers different than television viewers? How can you
make your videos stand out from the ones of cats cuddling with chickens? Award-winning filmmaker
Vanessa Serrao will draw on her experiences as a new media producer for Discovery Channel and as the
founder of NatureBreak.org, the online wildlife video series and social network for nature lovers, to
discuss how filmmakers can make a successful online video.
Discussion follows the screening with Stephen Szabo, Executive Director, Transatlantic Academy, and author
of The Diplomacy of German Unification (St Martins Press, 1992).
This documentary focuses on the 329 days between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 3rd of October, 1990. It
juxtaposes interviews with the most important figures in the political process from both Germanies and the
former Allied powers with accounts of everyday citizens who found themselves at least as surprised by the fall
of the Wall as the politicians themselves.
The road to reunification was not a one-way street. A happy ending was not guaranteed. This film documents
how it came to be despite all the obstacles, and how people used the short time slot offered to them.
Carl-Ludwig Paeschke and Uli Weidenbach also co-directed a film about the fall of the Berlin Wall, Der
schönste Irrtum der Geschichte – Wie die Berliner Mauer wirklich fiel (2009).
Enlightened, Inc. is hosting an art show open-house in collaboration with two notable 501©(3) non-profit

intercultural understanding of interdependent art. These organizations have dedicated themselves to collecting,
preserving, documenting, and promoting work pertaining to the art, craft, and culture from each of their
respective parts of the world – Russia and Africa.

The event location is Metro accessible and located within three (3) blocks of both Farragut North and McPherson
Square metro stations.
This is a unique opportunity to appreciate and support the artwork of talented artisans. 60 percent of proceeds
from any sales go directly back to the artist and in many cases, support their families’ basic needs in Africa.
Additionally, a percentage goes to the non-profit entities to support their programs.
Mbari Institute, established in 1995, has showcased over thirty-six solo and group exhibitions of artists from all
over Africa. Mbari Institute’s director – Mimi Wolford – provides exhibition space in Washington, DC and
organizes traveling and single-site exhibitions at museums and universities throughout the United States –
rewarding priceless opportunities for underprivileged African artists in promoting their work.
Global Arts Network is a DC-based non-profit organization founded by Luba Taubvurtzel. This organization has
planted its foundation on promoting intercultural understanding and raising public awareness of how
distinguishable, worldwide art is interdependent.

National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree
program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship assignment. Fellows
receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, and full
payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing personal and professional development.
The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard
M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance
learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements.
Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000 multicultural, multiracial
alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and who are effecting positive changes in
communities nationally and internationally. Individually and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable
and just society while serving as role models for future generations.
Fellows apply their expertise in the public sector, contributing their newly acquired leadership skills to public
service for the betterment of their communities and the nation. They return to their former or new occupations
more experienced in public policy decision-making and are better prepared to make a strong commitment to
equity and social justice, thereby fulfilling the mission of the program. Finally, Fellows give back to the
organization that supported them, recognizing that their ongoing commitment, engagement and involvement
and/or annual giving will help to secure the future of National Urban Fellows.

I hope you will continue to support our efforts as a volunteer, and we have a new Mock Interview Day on July 13th (downtown
Washington, D.C., 6:30pm - 9:00pm) that we're offering to individuals who are applying to participate in our Fall
program. Volunteers will conduct three mock interviews in different interviewer ‘roles’ - CEO, Line Manager,
HR Manager – to give the experience of different types of interviews. Volunteers then give feedback about their
performance and their resume. You can RSVP to volunteer at this event by responding to this email!
If you're interested in helping us with our current challenge campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of June (last day of the
campaign today!), then you can text the word ‘partners’ to 20222 now to donate $10 to support our incredible programs. An
easy way to make a difference, without even leaving your desk! (more details below).
Best wishes,
Lauren

First, THANK YOU so much for your help in making this year’s BBQ Battle such a success! We could not have done it
without you. Know that you made a difference, and we very appreciative of those who choose to serve with us or on our
behalf.
You are receiving this email because you marked on your Volunteer Form (when you signed up for BBQ Battle) that you
were interested in other volunteer opportunities with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. PLEASE read on about
the process to becoming a regular volunteer with us as well as some general volunteer roles that may interest you.
In order to regularly volunteer at a Club, the applicant must complete, sign, and return the application packet. This will
include a registration form (attached), a background investigation consent form (attached), a fingerprint card, AND a copy
of their photo ID. Fingerprint cards can be mailed to the applicant or picked up from a Club location. Attached you will find
a listing of fingerprinting agencies with which you can make an appointment to complete the card.
**Please note that applicants under the age of 18 are not required to undergo a fingerprint check, though they
MUST complete the background investigation consent and permission form for minors and have each form
signed by legal parent/guardian. Be sure to include ALL required information including social security number
and signature(s)**
Volunteer roles vary as specific Club needs change. Applicant's interests and skills may also determine a potential
volunteer role. General opportunities could easily include tutors, mentors, program aides, administrative aides,
maintenance, beautification/repair, events/fundraising, or even pro bono services based on your skills. BGCGW also
offers summer programming at most locations. Summer schedules often times include field trips, educational enrichment
workshops, sports/fitness activities, arts & crafts, and more!
I can help narrow it down by your specific interests or region (MD, DC, VA). Speaking with staff at a specific Club is
another great way to help select a location. We have 8 Clubs in VA, 8 in DC, and 2 in MD. I have attached a listing of our
Clubs for your review. This directory includes Club addresses, phone numbers, and contacts.
Please don't hesitate to let me know how/if I can be of further assistance OR if you have any colleagues/classmates that
may be interested as well. Thanks again for your recent contribution; we hope to see you again soon!!!

CAAB is recruiting volunteers for the DC EITC Campaign tax season (February-April 2010). Our greatest need is for Savings
Promoters – volunteers who would talk to people waiting to get their taxes done about taking money management classes,
savings, direct depositing their refund, and the like. No experience necessary, we train you.
We are also looking for tax preparation volunteers able to work at East of the River tax sites, during daytime hours, or who
speak Spanish, Chinese, or Amharic. It’s a good, low-commitment volunteer opportunity because it’s only 3 months. See the
email below and please pass on to your networks!
Thanks,
Emily Appel

Make a Difference
Each tax return completed by a volunteer preparer can raise a low-income working family’s income by
more than $6,000.
This income boost can help a working family get out of debt, afford winter coats, pay utility bills, and save for
future goals and needs.
Savings Promoter volunteers* will also be on site helping families use their refunds to move up the
economic ladder!
Or, if you would rather volunteer as a Savings Promoter, you will receive 4 hours of interactive training to enable
you to help clients save their refunds, enroll in Money Management classes and credit counseling, and even open
direct deposit accounts!
Volunteers at some sites will even help eligible clients register for Food Stamps.
And don’t forget to SPREAD THE WORD about this incredible opportunity to anyone who might be interested in
joining the Campaign.
