Dear Jamiaites
I am pleased to present the much awaited inaugural Alumni Directory of Jamiaites
living in Saudi Arabia that has been brought out by the Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni
Association (JMIAA) Riyadh. I am sure you will find it very interesting, informative and
useful for future reference. Since the inception of JMIAA Riyadh in the year 2006, it
has taken various initiatives to connect with fellow Jamiaites in the form of organizing
several socio-cultural, educational and other programs. However, all along the growth
of Jamiaites and JMIAA membership, bringing out an alumni directory has been a
long cherished goal of the Jamiaites in the Kingdom. Finally, with the tireless efforts of
Directory Committee and the help and cooperation extended by the fellow Jamiaites,
we have been able to bring out our first Directory.
The directory includes information of more than 500 Jamiaites living in 24 locations
across the Kingdom. We would encourage all Jamiaites to send us their updated details
so that the same may be incorporated in the next issue of the Directory.
We are sure you will find the articles contained in the Directory informative and
motivating that are written by Jamiaites. The articles touch upon various interesting
subjects such as how JMIAA came into existence and blossomed into a full grown living
and vibrant entity; the founding spirit of JMI; the role of JMI in community service; brief
account of JMI founders and associates; distinguishing traits of a Jamiaite, an overview
of JMI schools, the erstwhile vibrant Jamia store etc. We would like to express our
appreciation to all the authors who have enriched this inaugural issue of the JMIAA
Directory.
This inaugural issue of Directory would not have been possible without the
professionalism and hard work of an extraordinary group of Jamiaites. I would like
to thank the entire Directory Committee and other Jamiaite volunteers for their
endeavours to compile the information from all parts of the Kingdom.
I would like to specially place on record the efforts and dedication of the current JMIAA
General Secretary, Mr. Abid Aqeel’s painstaking efforts in designing the directory. It
wouldn’t be exaggeration if we pronounce him as the master designer and creator
of the Directory. His creative, articulate and thoughtful designs of each and every
page of the directory including messages, articles, advertisements, photographs etc.

the directory is exemplary wherein he had to spend sleepless nights within the highly
tight deadlines.
Dr. Mohammed Najeeb deserves special mention for his coordination work with the
directory committee members. His time management and organizational skills helped
in timely compilation of various types of information and completion of work assigned
Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association (JMIAA), Riyadh Chapter is one of the most vibrant
expatriate social entities in Riyadh. It is also one of the most active associations of Jamia alumni
in the world. In fact, JMIAA Riyadh has led the way in setting the trend among Jamiaites across
the globe to become more organized in different cities of the world.
The need to have an association was felt not only for the purpose of mutual support and
welfare in times of emergency; rather it was also needed as an instrument for projecting and
propagating the pristine values of Jamia exemplified in tolerance, coexistence, patriotism
and openness to ideas. The association was armed with a clear vision and mission about its
goals and objectives.
There was no organized effort to build an association until 2006, though there was a significant
population of Jamiaites in Riyadh and there were some informal meetings among them.
The then Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. Mushirul Hassan, on a visit to Saudi
Arabia, urged Jamia Alumni to establish an association. Senior Jamiaites like Dr. Shafaatullah
Khan, Ghizal Mahdi, Khursheed Anwar, Shahabuddin, Shamshuddin Shams and Salman Azmi
answered his call and launched a search for Jamiaites working in Riyadh and organise them
in an association.
A small but a very active group of Jamiaites came into existence, which was very articulate
and energetic. Members like Zafar Bari, Ahsan Nadwi, Najeeb Qasmi, Ateequr Rahman,
Mohammad Muneeb, Aftab Nizami, Dr. Sarwar Hussain, Dr. Naseeb Ahmad, Prof. Tarique Baig,
Prof. Safdar Mehdi, Chaudhary Ehsan, Murshid Kamal, Laique Ahmad, Ghaysuddin, Masood
Farooqui, Late Abdul Ghani and Athar Azmi added value to the association and helped the
association reach new heights through hard work and dedication. To increase interaction
family get-togethers are organized regularly.
As the group started growing in strength, the need to have a charter was felt to define
the structure, functions, and rules and regulations of the association. In this regard, Ghizal
Mahdi drafted and presented a charter in November 2007 to Jamiaites that was adopted by
consensus and voice vote. It is worth mentioning the role of Zafar Bari and Ahsan Nadwi in
developing the consensus on the charter.
When Ghizal Mahdi became President in 2014, he showed keen interest in further developing
the charter in light of the new developments and experiences. A committee comprising
Ghizal Mahdi, Nisar Khan and Zafar Bari was formed to revise the charter. The committee

elections, something in which JMIAA prides itself. Since 2010, every two years elections are held and the

The most important event of the association is undoubtedly the Jamia Foundation Day. Important
personalities like the sitting Vice Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia Professor Talat Ahmad (2014),
Padam Shri Professor Akhtarul Wasey (2013), and former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin
(2011) graced the previous functions as chief guest.
One of the most important programs in our annual calendar is ‘A Jamia Campus Across the Sea’, which
was conceived by the current President of the Association, Ghizal Mahdi. This flagship program aims to
recreate a campus like atmosphere affording opportunities to children to showcase their creative skills
such as drawing and painting skills, writing and speaking capabilities and general knowledge.
JMIAA Riyadh patronizes activities like Urdu Mushairas, health awareness programs and educational
seminars.
It has been supporting victims of natural disasters, giving scholarships to needy children and helping
orphans. Perhaps the most important initiative in this respect is the establishment of the ‘Jamia
Endowment Fund’ established by the association with the University.
With a view to encourage sports activities, JMIAA Riyadh has established a strong cricket team that
participates in the Riyadh Cricket League.
JMIAA Riyadh continues to grow in numbers and helps improve our quality of life. It endeavors to promote
Jamia Millia Islamia as an enviable brand name in Saudi Arabia, with each member as an ambassador of
the University in his/ her own right.
