Should it be reported, or you see, any concerning behaviours by a

member of staff or relative towards a patient, what would you do?

Although, I don’t like to “rat out” my colleagues,in this line of business, the
patient and his safety is the primary goal.So, if I see something that’s
inapropiate, I would report it to my supervisor.

What would you consider to be inappropriate behaviour?

- to be disrespectful towards patients


- to brutalize the patient

You are doing the medication and notice a dose for the previous round
has not been signed for. What steps would you then take?

First of all, I will check why the respective dose wasn’t signed for
(for different resons: they forget to sign it) or if it hasn’t been administered at
all. In this case ,I will report it to my supervisor.

A patient admitted for depression approached you the next morning,


they are very anxious and wants to leave the hospital. What would you
do?

Reassure him.
I will try to talk to the patient , explaining to him the importance
of staying in the hospital and receiving treatment .
Then I will go to my superior and also, I call the patient’s family.

You are working on an acute ward and suspect that some


in-patients are using substances. What would you do?

I would go to my superior and he will take the measures, according to


protocol.

What would you do if a patient refuses to take his medicine?

I would talk to him and try to explain the importance of taking his
medicine.I will try to make him understand that this is very important to his
healt.If neccessary, I call the nurse in charge.
I inform the staff and I document the incident in the patient’s notes.
If successful, what anxieties do you have about working in the UK?

I am nervous about the working manner, because I am certain that it’s


different from the style I was used to in my country.
Also, I am anxious about talking with the patients,
with my colleagues ,because I don’t fully understand the language.

I would try to talk to the patient/family about the situation in a private


environment and try to resolve it on my own at this stage.
If necessary, I would involve the nurse in charge.I would follow the complaints
procedure and give the patient a complaint information form.

HOW CAN YOU REDUCE THE RISK OF COMPLAINTS?

First of all, I would provide a good quality service and I would try to have a good
relantionship with the patients, using good communication skills.

PREVENTION AUDIT. WHAT WOULD YOUR ROLE BE IN ENSURING THAT
IT DID NOT FAIL AGAIN? HOW WOULD YOU GET STAFF SUPPORT?

I would find out why it failed and would improve my own personal
Infection Prevention procedures.
I would make sure that all the staff is aware of this (so they can all improve
their standards)

HOW WOULD YOU DEAL WITH A PATIENT WHO HAS MRSA(Stafiloccocus


Aureus inf.) OR CDIF(Clostridium Difficile inf.) (infection control)?

I would use barrier nursing precautions (the nursing technique by which a


patient with an infectious disease is prevented from Infecting other people).
I would make sure that all the staff that enters the patient’s room is aware of
the infection status and that myself and the other staff will be properly
equipped (gowns, gloves…)
Also, it is important that after we leave the patient, we will decontaminate
properly.
HOW WOULD YOU DEAL WITH CONFLICT IN THE WORKPLACE ?

I would speak with the person involved in a private area, or I will invite the
persons concerned to speak with each other.
But if the problem cannot be resolved this way ,I will inform the nurse in
charge.

YOU ARRIVE ON SHIFT TO FIND YOU ARE THE ONLY QUALIFIED NURSE
WITH 1 HCA (HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT) AND 24 PATIENTS TO CARE
FOR…HOW WILL YOU DEAL WITH THIS SITUATION?

If there is a policy in place for this type of situation I would follow the procedure
layed out in it. I would contact the person in charge of the wards for help to get
staff from other wards and I will prioritise the care necessary until help is
obtained.

SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE INDUCTION?

I would like to be provided with an induction programe and a procedure


guidelines. Also, it would be necessary to receive orientation to the layout of the
unit, but also to be introduced to my superior and the staff of the unit.

WITH WHAT WILL YOU DO?

I would explain to the person that asked me to perform the task that I am not
competent and that I will have to receive training in order to perform the task.
If the person insists that I undertake the duty I will refuse and I will go to my
manager.

I would like the nurses to treat me with respect and dignity,to be polite and
smiling, compassionate and pacient.
The ward must be clean, the food warm.
I would like to improve my healt as soon as possible,because I would like to go
home.
IF YOU CAME UPON A PATIENT WHO HAD FALLEN IN THE CLINICAL
AREA WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Call for help, then asses the environment and make the area safe.I would asses
the patient’s condition and I would reassure him. If the patient has a spinal injury
or a fracture, I will not move him until a doctor arrives. I would check clinical
observations .
It is important to find out why this happened then document the incident and
inform the patient’s family.

HOW WOULD YOU DEAL WITH A PATIENT WHO WAS UPSET AND
WORRIED ABOUT CATCHING A HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTION?

I would try to talk to him and reduce his anxietes and reassure him about our
ward’s high standards of care.Ask why he is worrying about this.Move the patient
to a side room if he is very anxious, if possible.
I would also inform the rest of the staff about the patients concerns.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

First I would check the patients clinical observations.Inform the doctor


immediately.Inform the nurse in charge.Check the patient's medical history and
allergy status.Check the drug side effects and interactions with other
medications.Inform the patient of the mistake and reassure him.If they wish to
make a complaint deal 
with as per complaints policy.I would document the
incident in the patient’s notes and inform the staff members.I would monitor the
patient’s condition regularly.
WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE TERM ‘EVIDENCE BASED
PRACTICE’

This term means that nurses must be up to date with all the novelties in the healt
care department.

YOU ARE ADMINISTERING MEDICATION TO A 57 YEAR OLD LADY AND


HER HEART RATE IS BELOW 40. HER MEDICATIONS ARE
PARACETAMOL, WARFARIN, DIGOXIN, AND AMOXICILLIN. WHAT ACTION
WOULD YOU TAKE AND WHY?

I would hold digoxin (when a patient is on digoxin, their pulse rate must be over
60 beats per minut) and get patient reviewed by the doctor.I would check all
clinical observations and I will follow the doctor’s instructions.Explain to patient
what is going on and document everything.

WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE TERM CLINICAL GOVERNANCE?

It means that the patient services continuously improve,by offering to the health
care workers education and training. Also, it means that the patients are very well
informed and involved in their care.

I would participate in courses, conferences regularly.


I would do research and keep up to date with guidelines and policies.

First of all ,I would intervene and attend to the patient, because his safety is the
most important.I would inform the nurse in charge and the relatives.Complaints
procedure needs to be explained to the patient.Ensure the incident is
documented in the patient’s notes.
WHAT EXCITES YOU AND FRUSTRATES YOU AS A NURSE?

I get excited by good results in patients care and that they get better under my care.I
am frustrated because, sometimes,regardless of my care and all the medical
progress,some patients get worse and there’s nothing me can do about it.

If you find a patient undressed and confused, on his bed, what would
you do?

- try to talk him, reassure him.


- help him dress himself
- check the clinical observations,
- call the doctor,
- inform the staff and document the incident in his notes.

A patients returns from the toilet with his clothes wet . Whay would
you do?

I will assist the patient with his personal hygiene,help him dress
himself with .

A patient is admitted on your ward with food poisoning. What would


you do?

The patient’s problems can be:nausea and vomiting ,deshydration,


diarrhoea.

-Advise the patient to call the nurse when he is vomiting.


-Administer IV fluids prescribed.
-Maintain fluid balance chart.
- Obtein blood samples as requested.
- Encourage oral intake.
- Report all concerns to the doctor.
- Obtein consent for all procedures.
- Reassure the patient.
- Monitor the patient’s condition regularly.
