The article “Are Writing Deficiencies Creating a Lost Generation of Business Writers?”

written by Quible & Griffin (2007) focuses on the issue of writing deficiencies. As such, the

authors examine the reasons that have contributed to these deficiencies in society. Such compels

the authors to provide the evidence that a modification of the glossing approach, context-based

approach, and consistency in error marking contributes to the reduced level of the sentence errors

that individuals make. The authors explore the cost of employees’ poor writing skills and the role

that instructors for grammar play in the writing classes.

The research problem is the issue of writing deficiencies of the new generation of

employees. Such costs the business world because employers are not able to hire these

individuals who have problems in expressing themselves effectively in the written

communication. The question asked is “Are writing deficiencies creating a lost generation of

business writers?

To answer this question, the authors reviewed various works of other authors in the

business sector. There are individual writers who are interested in business writing. These writers

are interested in uncovering the challenges facing the business community concerning

communication (Bradley et al., 2015). In addition, the author has reviewed various communities

in the education and business fields including; the College Board, the National Commission on

Writing for America's Families, Schools, and College. These communities help in understanding

the cause of writing problems, especially in business writing.

The authors found that problems associated with business writing include the

disconnection between the language education in schools and the required market standards

(Cherry & Klemic, 2013). When the learning institutions offer services that are outdated in the

market, there will be some difficulties in delivering their mandate as required in the field.

Therefore, the loss experience of the business community will go on until the learning

institutions offer up-to-date education in business writing.

The hiring of employees from the lost generation of business writers has serious

implications. The writing deficiency in the employees translates to the loss of business

opportunity in the market. Therefore, the business will continue to struggle as they will be

making losses. The losses made also have a serious implication to the society and the

government due to the limitation of revenue in terms of wage and taxes respectively.
