history, DeKalb County voters
approved a Special Purpose
Local Option Sales Tax
(SPLOST) in November last
year. The tax is estimated to
generate approximately $388
million in revenue over the
next six years.
On July 26, DeKalb County
officials met with residents
during a SPLOST open house
to introduce the county’s
SPLOST Oversight Committee
and the SPLOST Program
Management Team.

preparing school supplies,
immunizations, nutrition and
transportation plans.

parents are now able to register

In today’s political climate, it is
easy to become that pesky person
who regularly posts messages on
social media that are either blindly
supportive or vehemently opposed
to one’s preferred candidate or
political party. However, even for
those of us who have traditionally
been independent voters, these posts,
memes and links get old quickly. I
often wonder what motivates some
people to be so often focused on the
negative.
I admit to voting for Donald
Trump, my vote was totally in
opposition to Hillary Clinton and
the Clinton political machine. It was
the first time I had ever not supported
and voted for the Democratic
presidential candidate. Am I happy
with the outcome? Absolutely not.
If I had the opportunity to vote
again, would I change my vote? If the
choices were the same, I’d probably
not cast a vote for either candidate.

what happened during the election

influence to get their desired results.
This is precisely what I voted against.
But look what we have now.
Trump regularly is an
embarrassment with his crass
comments and self-promoting jargon.
He has alienated allies the world over,
has demonstrated an expert ability
to flip-flop on issues and treat most
members of the press as if they are the
enemy; but our economy is strong and
trade and military agreements may

eventually be amended so that the
United States is treated as fairly as are
other nations that are commerce and
military partners.
If Trump is successful in
denuclearizing North Korea and
bringing peace to the Korean
Peninsula, this will likely be his legacy.
However, if the United States becomes
bosom buddies with Russia, and if
two of the most powerful nations in
the world work for the betterment of
all mankind, this could become his
most important accomplishment. Do
I believe this will happen? Absolutely
not, but it is possible.
I’ve learned the best way for me to
keep from becoming depressed over
the global political climate and the
lack of journalistic integrity in what
I believe to be biased news coverage
by both liberal and conservative
news outlets—is to quietly repeat the
serenity prayer to myself.
We can’t change centuries-old
policies that allow politicians to be
influenced by those with the most
cash. We can’t change the ugly,
childish behavior exhibited by many
so-called leaders on the national and
global political stage. We can’t change
the fact that most good leaders would
not want to expose themselves or their
families to the scrutiny and ugliness
that is involved in seeking a political
office. It seems that our choices are the
ones who are power hungry, greedy
and lacking in morals and honesty.
We also can’t change the fact that
no matter how much media outlets
may deny it, headlines, choices of
quotes and photos used clearly show
biased news coverage.
I’ve gotten to the point that I don’t
trust any elected official at state or
national levels. The compensation
paid to senators and representatives
is far from being conducive to entice
those who have the best interests of
the electorate in mind. As a result,
we end up with officials who are
constantly making deals that will
either benefit the official, the official’s
foundation or charity, or the official’s
supporters.
The best I can hope for is to have
the ability to accept the things I
cannot change, change the things I am
able to change the wisdom to know
the difference and for better choices
in candidates and news outlets in the
future.

in a media roundtable event with
DeKalb County Police Department,

The event was held July 25 at the
DeKalb County Police Department
headquarters at West Exchange Place
in Tucker.
The purpose of the event, according
to DKPD, was to develop a better
working relationship with community,
media outlets and police departments.
DeKalb County unit commanders
spoke briefly about their specific roles
of their units.
“This gives us an opportunity to get
to know each other and helps us learn
how we can serve our communities
better,” DKPD Chief James Conroy
said.
At the end of the roundtable, media
professionals were given a tour of
DeKalb Police headquarters.

New brewing business a hit in Tucker

Tucker Brewing Company
has become the new hot spot in
Tucker.
Located on Bibb Drive in the
Tucker industrial area, Tucker
Brewing Company opened June
2. The family business brews
its own beer, which is German
in style and ingredients. They
brew three beers—TKR Pilsner,
Southern Heaven Hefeweizen
and Georgia Red Lager.
The company was located
in Norcross before moving to
Tucker.
“We were looking for a space
to purchase, and we were in
Norcross and just wanted to
stay in that area,” said co-owner
Ashley Hubbard. “But, when
there was nothing available
we decided to start looking
in Tucker because it’s close
by and we ended up finding
the building that we’re in and
really liked it. We liked the area
and decided to purchase the
building.”
They moved in January 2017
and had the grand opening
June 2, which Hubbard said was
attended by more than 2,000
people. She said the support

children. The company hosts
live music every Thursday night,
millions of people across this
country,” Taylor said. Over
the past 20 years, an average
of 849 net women-owned
businesses have opened each
day, she said, noting that even
during the economic downturn
between 2007 and 2009, as
unemployment rates climbed
within business in general, there
continued to be employment
gains within women-owned
business that employ between 50
and 99 people.
The rapid growth in
woman-owned businesses
includes significant numbers of
businesses owned by women
who belong to ethnic minorities.
By 2017, women of color
accounted for 46 percent of
women-owned firms, creating
workforce development
opportunities of more than 2
million jobs and $360.4 billion
in revenue.

twin sister, Kendria Taylor, the

on Bibb Drive,” McHenry said.
“They really made a significant
decision to come to a location
where people will have to make
an effort to come there.
“I’ve heard from tons of
people who have gone over
there, and never been on Bibb
Drive before, and they’re really
blown out of the water to see
how awesome it is as to have a
brewery in Tucker,” McNenry

minutes younger sibling, “Her
success in business doesn’t
surprise me. Her brains, her
drive and her creativity were all
there when we were growing up.
We expected these things of her.”
During her keynote speech,
Katerina Taylor recalled an
incident from her childhood
when she was hired by a
classmate to help with a writing
project. “I worked hard on it. I
did a good job and when I was
done he offered me some bubble
gum for my work. I said, ‘no, I
want to be paid cash.’ As women
we have to learn that we’re worth
more than bubble gum. We’ve
been told that what we do is less
valuable. We should value what
we do and not be ashamed to
charge accordingly. When you
see a woman in business, you
should help her, support her and
pay her what she’s worth. When
we undercut each other, we’re
inviting others to undercut us.
“You don’t have to do

live music. It’ll be a really fun

Decatur cuts home games after field damage after the football season begins.

Changes have been made to
Decatur and DeKalb County
football teams’ schedules due to
flood damage at Decatur High
School’s football field.
Decatur High School Athletic
Director Rodney Thomas said
thunderstorms that hit Decatur
last month caused major damage
and the entire field will be
replaced.
“A lot of that storm water runs
through [the school],” Thomas
said. “So, [water] ran under
ground in our parking lot, blew
off some manhole covers and in
turn bloated the field. All of that
water got beneath the field and it
lifted the field up, put wrinkles in
the field, shifted a lot of the gravel
and pretty much ruined the field.
So, the field is not playable.”
Thomas could not disclose the
total cost to replace the field but
said getting new turf could cost
from $400,000 up to $700,000.
He said school officials hope to
have the field replaced by the end
of August, which is three weeks
Decatur had to change locations
for two games—a scrimmage
game against Druid Hills and
its home-opener against Miller
Grove.
“Druid Hills could not
accommodate us for an away
game, so we rescheduled the
scrimmage game [to play] KIPP
Atlanta Collegiate,” Thomas said.
Decatur was scheduled to host
Miller Grove Aug. 24, but the
game will be played Aug. 23 at
Avondale Stadium. Decatur has a
bye week Aug. 31 and is scheduled
to play its first home game Sept.
7 against St. Pius X, if the field is
repaired on scheduled.
The schedule changes leave
Decatur with four home games
instead of five, not including
playoff games. The football team
has been practicing on a field at
the United Methodist Children’s
Home.
At DeKalb County’s football
media day July 19, football
coach Cody Cory thanked the
district’s athletic department for
accommodating the team and
working with Decatur on the

Wilson is believed to be the
first Division III swimmer ever
to qualify for the Pan Pacific
Championships.
Wilson secured his spot
for championships with his

200-meter breaststroke
with a time of 2:08.71. He
also finished second in the
100-meter breaststroke (59.43).
Wilson is one of 29 men

DeKalb officials take proactive approach to opioid addiction

From June 2016 to May
2017, the total number of
opioid doses prescribed to
Georgia patients surpassed
541 million, according to
statistics from the Attorney
General’s office of Georgia.
That’s approximately 54 doses
for every individual in the
state, including children.
To possibly prevent
overdose deaths and educate
individuals about opioid
addiction, healthcare
providers, first responders
and DeKalb County officials
gathered at Porter Sanford
Performing Arts and
Community Center July
26 for the second annual
Opioid Summit, hosted
by Commissioner Larry
Johnson.

of the summit was to take

awareness campaign. [Opioid
addiction] is in DeKalb and
it’s in Fulton, but it has not hit
as hard as it can. I want to be
in front of the curve,” Johnson
said.
Johnson said opioids
are becoming stronger and
occasionally laced with
fentanyl, a synthetic opioid
used as a pain medication.
“Fentanyl is what you use
to tranquilize elephants. One
hit of that and you’re gone,”
Johnson said. “We have to get
in front of it, so this year is
about education.”
During the summit,
panelists discussed treatment
of opioid addiction, the
psychological factors of
addiction and how to combat
addiction.
Addiction intervention
institutions such as Stand
Inc.–a DeKalb County
nonprofit organization
which specializes in abuse
intervention and prevention—
also were available to
participants of the summit.
Charles Sperling, executive
director for Stand Inc., said
he was happy to partner with
DeKalb for the event.
“I wanted to give people an
opportunity and an advantage
to get their lives in order,”
Sperling said. “We are a
program that’s about second
chances.”
Sperling said opioids
have been a crisis in certain
communities for years and are
now affecting individuals of
different backgrounds.
“We want to thank the
DeKalb County, Atlanta
metro-five for highlighting
this issue. We need more
resources to the table,”
Sperling said. “The [Opioid
Summit] is working to create
more resources to impact the
opioid epidemic.”
Johnson said next year
the program will focus on
environmental effects of
opioid addiction.
