Course Introduction
¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español! Welcome to Spanish class! I am looking forward to a successful year of Spanish for all of
my students. In this classroom we have the opportunity to communicate frequently with our classmates and look beyond our
borders to learn new and interesting things about different cultures. In order to create a successful learning environment, I
have put together the following guidelines for the students in this classroom.

Rules and Procedures:

Materials:
Textbook (you will use in class),notebook, filler paper, folder, blue or black pens ONLY, and notes taken in a notebook.

Entering the classroom and preparing for class:

Come into the classroom each day quietly and prepare yourself for class by taking your seat and getting out ONLY your
Spanish materials. As soon as I start class prepare to start your “Para Empezar” (bell work). You will be timed roughly 3-5
minutes to finish. Write everything down! Including instructions.

Tardiness:
Being tardy to class means arriving to class after and/or not sitting in your seat after the bell rings. My door is locked after
class begins. Make sure you arrive to class with a valid to pass in order to come in. If you are tardy, you are not to disrupt the
classroom when you arrive, but are to simply knock on the door and sign the sign in sheet and the time you arrived.

Restroom policy:
Every quarter you will receive 10 “potty pesos”. Each time you wish to leave the room to use the restroom you must give me
one of your potty pesos. And sign out in the proper location. After the quarter ends each potty peso you have left will be worth
1 extra credit point per peso. Ex: 0 potty pesos= 0 points

Seating Policy:
Seating in the classroom is assigned by the teacher. Sit in your assigned seat unless given permission to change. Do not get up
to get tissues without permission. Please throw away scraps/garbage at the end of the period as you dismiss. High school
students should not have to be told daily to stay in their seats! Take responsibility for yourself, your actions, and your work.

Food and Beverages:

No food or beverages are permitted in the classroom unless given by the teacher. This includes candy and gum. Food and
beverage items should not be visible in the classroom. Students may not chew on non-food items in the classroom – such as
straws, pen caps, tooth picks, etc……
Water is the only beverage that is allowed!
Dress Code:
The school dress code is in effect in the classroom – SEE THE STUDENT HANDBOOK. If you enter the classroom out of dress
code, you will be sent to the office and/or receive a detention for being in violation of the school dress code policy.

Grooming:
The classroom is not the proper place for grooming and is therefore not permitted. Furthermore, no materials used for
grooming are to be visible in class (such as hair brushes, makeup, mirrors, etc.)

Electronic Devices:
At some points during the year, we may use cell phones to assist us in an academic manner for research. IF I direct you to use
your cell phone for this purpose, the phone is to remain on your desk during use. Failure to comply with the above rules in the
‘electronic devices’ section will result in the surrender of your cell phone to administration.

Classroom Courtesy and Respect:

Please raise your hand in class to speak – to ensure the best learning environment in class.
Speak to others with respect. No name calling, profanity, disrespectful words, or threats are to ever be used in this school.
Detentions will be given for disrespectful infractions.
If you have a disagreement about the lesson for the day, please see the teacher after school to discuss it – do not blurt out
negative opinions during class time.
Do not interrupt others who are speaking and do not speak with a disrespectful tone of voice to the teacher or your classmates.

Classwork:
Any work assigned in class must be done on your own unless the teacher permits you to work with other students. Individual
work is to be completed quietly on your own (any questions during this time should be addressed to the teacher by raising
your hand silently.)

Tests and Quizzes:

Throughout the course of the class, there will be tests and quizzes. The dates of the tests and quizzes will be announced prior
to when they are given, unless it is a pop quiz. If you are absent on the day of a test or quiz, you should be prepared to take the
test or quiz on the day you return to class. If you are absent for an extended period of time, another arrangement will be made
so that you may prepare for the test or quiz.

Grades:
Spanish grades will be on a point value system. The course will consist of the following major graded activities
● Participation (answering questions, asking questions, and contributing to class)
● Effort (preparedness for class, attention, handing in work, punctuality, asking for assistance, attendance, being on
task)
● Tests and Quizzes
● Classwork
● Homework

Attendance:
When you are absent, you are responsible for getting missed notes and assignments.
You will have the same number of days that you were absent to make up the work that you are missing – (other arrangements
can be provided in the event of a lengthy absence.) Per the handbook, if a student is absent on the due date of a previously
announced assignment, project, or other long-term assignment, that item is still due on the date announced. There are no
exceptions to this rule unless prior notification has been given.
