THEATRE IV

This course will build upon skills learned in previous drama courses. The focus is on acting techniques, scene
study, characterization, playwriting, and the playwright’s contribution to theatre. Students will continue to
develop group and self-assessment skills, critical thinking skills, problem solving skills; and the ability to
connect the literature being studied to a variety of cultures, history, and other content areas.

Theatre IV is designed to help students achieve personal fulfillment through their own creativity and
promote enjoyment and appreciation for all aspects of theatre.

OBJECTIVES

 Develop and use a range of emotional expression to portray complex characters.


 Synthesize movement techniques to create characters.
 Use language to reveal and communicate text and subtext.
 Develop objectivity in assessing skills and abilities in design and construction.
 Develop objectivity in appraising personal abilities.
 Produce theatre with attention to sensory and emotional detail in content and form.
 Use language to communicate with theatre participants and theatre productions.
 Develop ease and objectivity as a participant in theatre productions.
 Apply principles of costume, scenery, lighting, and stage design.
 Demonstrate specific acting techniques in the context of specific dramatic situations.
 Explore career opportunities as related to dramatic arts.
 Prepare an audition and a portfolio.
 Direct a one act play.

Projects for this class require careful planning, organization, and rehearsal for class presentations.
Drama IV students will be involved with group and individual participation, such as pantomimes,
improvisations, scenes, and monologues. All drama classes will be involved in the major productions
for the school and community. This will involve extra after school time and is a major part of your
grade.

COURSE NEEDS

 TEXT: THE ACTOR AT WORK


 LAB FEE: $20.00
 Bring pen and pencil to class everyday
 3-ring binder…notebooks are checked. All work handed in must be on loose leaf paper. Some work
will be typed.
 Each student will need a separate notebook for a theatre journal.

EVALUATION

A 100 point system is used in grading quizzes, homework, notebooks, tests, and oral presentations. Major
projects will consist of tests, monologues, scenes, and play production.
