Comments about the library 2017

Arcata D Street
 The library in Arcata seems to be stricter and less toddler friendly. The Trinidad is much more of a pleasurable
experience, great atmosphere and friendly/fun library staff
 [Son] runs wild, he isn’t ready yet
 Love the baby sign language class
 I don’t much care for the Arcata library
 Flyer the playgroups with small take home flyers with schedules
 We love the library, but would love to see a few more board books
 The library is a place for homeless to use the internet and sleep
 We love the Humboldt County libraries-all of them, not just the one we frequent-Arcata
 Haven’t gone-everything is the same time

Blue Lake
 The librarian Kim is amazing. She always has the patience to help my kids. Also helpful finding parenting books
 McKinleyville library has reduced services 
 Me and boy have yet to go to library. I forget they exist. I’m sad about this. Putting it in my schedule now

19
 Blue Lake library is a priceless resource for community building. Lifelong education and a fun place for everyone.
All in less than 200 sq. ft.
 Thanks! We love library time!
 Library staff are very patient with the kids. We feel welcome at the ones we go to: Arcata, McK, Eureka
 I don’t like all the homeless that hang around outside and hanging out in the playgrounds. Security would be nice.
I stopped going to Eureka because of it

Discovery Museum
 The park outside is full of transients, needles, condoms. We won’t play there
 Awesome!
 Our house is full of books which are constantly upgraded and replaced
 The homeless have made the Eureka library unusable for families
 Thank you for having a restroom in the children’s area and keeping it for kids only!
 Library playground is very dirty, not kept up and even cleaning workers have told me too look out for syringes?!?!
library playground draws child in and is unsafe to play 
 Have not yet taken my son to the library but have been at play group when library guest reader is present and
enjoyed
 No he ido a la biblioteca// I have not visited to the library.

Fortuna Playgroup
 I am not aware of children's services or activities for young children at the library

FUN
 We enjoy library story time
 The library playground gets too filthy from homeless/drug abusers. I have found human feces there and used
needles in the playground ship. Very sad. The children’s area inside the library is very nice
 Love library!
 The theme story times are a great program for youngsters
 Don’t feel safe
 It’s so hard to go to the library with a toddler!
 I didn’t realize all the parenting information available until I went for a sign language event

Loleta Playgroup-
 Would love to see more children’s services/activities at Ferndale library! We like the Eureka library but it’s too far
for us and we don’t always feel safe in the parking lot there
 There are a lot of good resources in the community that occur during working hours. My husband and I work full
time so we are not able to attend on a regular basis

Manila Playgroup
 Our library has a lot of homeless drug addicts
 [Don’t go to story time and don’t find library family friendly] because of the homeless/drug addicts leaving
dangerous garbage @ library 
 The library is great inside. The playground at the library is a hazard. Drug users and homeless defecate and leave
used needles in the playground. My children want to play in there but I can no longer allow it. A friend’s child
found a switchblade in the playground there last week. It needs better security and sanitation
 Haven’t been yet. Just moved to Humboldt a few months ago

20
 He is not at the age to sit still for long periods-only will sit for 1 book. I haven’t seen too much information available
at the local library [about children’s services/activities/materials]

Mattole Playgroup
 We love the bookmobile
 We love and rely on the bookmobile. It is a critically important library and service to us as we live 1+ hours drive
from any actual library. We wish the bookmobile could come more often and stay longer. It seriously enriches our
lives.

McKinleyville
 It was difficult and somewhat stressful taking my 2.5 year old to the McK library. There was one worker and it took
15-20 minutes to get a book we needed help finding. I wish the kids area was more enclosed so the kids wouldn’t
try and run around
 It’s hard to get information of library
 I wish the McKinleyville branch was improved. It substantially lacks in size and capacity compared to Eureka. it
can easily be overcrowded and my kids get discouraged to go unless it is easy enough to avoid older kids

Orleans
 Bookmobile is great. My family uses it often. Eureka is too far to go. My wife and I highly value education (PhD,
master’s for both) so we go to different libraries when we can with our kids. Reading, book activities are helpful for
my children’s learning.
 As a grandfather I look at books with grandchild most times.

Rio Dell Playgroup

 Unfortunately due to free Wi-Fi the library often has homeless people lingering around
 I’ve been to libraries as a kid and I had so much fun. My child hasn’t been to one yet
 They get mad easily in Fortuna if we talk too loud or stare at us when we read, play games. I feel kind of awkward
but not at times. It’s not like we’re too loud, but they seem judgmental

Southern Humboldt
Miranda
 Library in town is closed so much! I have a hard time scheduling library times because of this
Redway
 Because it’s the only internet in Garberville, there are more than often homeless in there. That makes it
uncomfortable
 The one in Garberville needs more space away from the homeless [comment placed next to “family
friendly” question]
Shelter Cove
 Cynthia is a great resource and I will be connecting with her to bring in story time to SC

Tiny Tots
 More movies, we love all about our libraries

Willow Creek Playgroup

 Don’t go to library
 Need more events, services; everything is needed at our library! Including books!
 I feel the programs available on the coast should be available in my area too

21
 Our library needs reg story times and more things like on coast. Rural areas are desperate for children’s
programs. Library is small, needs updating and cleaning.
 Our library is in need of repair
 If I can’t find something, Elizabeth is so helpful tracking it down!
 Great selection. Miss Elizabeth @WC library can always order particular books if needed

 So very impressed w/Molly and this playgroup!
 Thank you!!
 Thanks! I feel very blessed to have such a supportive community/so many playgroup choices
 I wish the parents were more mindful of their children and that the management would direct parents. My child is
going to be giant. I don’t want him to learn to bully or get bullied
 Please bring back KEET/Ready to Learn program
 Thank you!
 Blue Lake Playgroup is great, it’s not too full of growers unlike [another playgroup]. [two others] were dreadful
 Molly does an amazing job making everyone feel welcome. The whole feeling of the playgroup is laid back and
relaxed which helps my little one do better. So happy we found this awesome support group
 My family loves Blue Lake Playgroup, it’s like a little family where everyone is welcome and never judged. I have a
great appreciation for the program. Molly and the Americorps members do a wonderful job. I wish the program
was more than once a week
 The playgroups have been critical to us feeling a part of community and meeting friends having lived here 13
months
 Molly is awesome! The Blue Lake playgroup is the best one. I tell parents all the time to go to the Blue Lake
playgroup
 We are here twice a week and always count on it being open. It has been very influential in his life. Hopefully my
daughter’s life too!
 None. 99.9% satisfied!
 I love it! I don’ know what I would do without it

Discovery Museum
 I absolutely love that these playgroups are available for my children. It is a blessing they are free also!!!
 We love Bev!
 I like the structure of snack time and activity. Most approp. playgroup age-wise for my daughter. Most friendly and
inclusive. We love teacher Jenna
 First 5 Playgroup has helped socialize my child and prepared her for preschool. Great program.
 So grateful! This brings so much support to our children!
 As a grandparent that lives in McKinleyville we utilize numerous programs and venues during our babysitting time
in Eureka. Thankfully Eureka provides many child friendly, safe, and nurturing environments for our children and
grandchildren. Thank you. It takes a village.
 Jenna is warm and she is a natural w/kids. Amazing, wonderful. Snacks are generous. Let us know how parents
can contribute-volunteer, donations, etc.
 I wish we had more time to attend more playgroups and Discovery Museum more often! I think it’s great that
there are so many free activities and groups for young children here. Thank you to the funding parties!
 Great story hour and regular “routine.” First 5 programs are great for children and parents. thank you

Fortuna Playgroup
 I love having this place to go
 [She] loves coming to play here!!

FUN Playcenter
 Thank you for being here! Thank you to Alissa for being here and going above and beyond every playgroup. She
has made a big impact on all of my kids’ lives! Thank you to the moon and back!
 We appreciate all the playgroups First 5 provides

 Alissa G is very welcoming and my child looks forward to seeing her
 Glad to see these programs-not just this one
 Our world is better because of these playgroups. Thank you. Thank you thank you. So grateful for First 5 
Adorni Center is awesome. Just wish city was more understanding about having it open.
 My child loves singing and story time at the end-asks for it the whole time we are there. There was a time when a
gentleman sang and played guitar and the children seemed to not be able to participate as they usually do and
mine and others I spoke with were disappointed by this. Mine and another I know kept asking to sing the more
familiar songs. They may get boring and repetitive to us but, at least in my experience, the kids love it.

Loleta
 Que es muy beneficioso para las familias aprender cómo ayudar a nuestros niño y tener una buena rutina en
