Injustice and Advocacy Introduction

Social Duration of Lesson: ​20 minutes


Emotional Standards: ​SS1.4.2: Discuss and apply responsibilities of citizens including respect for the rights of
others and treating others fairly
Learning Target:​ SWBAT define the terms injustice and advocacy

Key Terms:
Injustice- ​a problem that is unfair
Advocacy-​ support for/of a cause

Instructional Strategies:
-​Define injustice and ask students to share out if they have ever seen a problem in class or their
outside of school that was unfair
● Come back together whole group and provide examples for students
○ Link back to Black History Month and work learning about segregation/important
figures/court decisions
-Define advocacy and ask students if they have ever stood up for something that they thought was
a problem
● Martin Luther King was an advocate for equal rights

-Read “This is Our House” by Michael Rosen.
-Ask students if George turning away from the other characters was the right thing to do?
● Turn and talk with rug neighbor
● Come back whole group and share

-What problems occur at school? In Kansas City? Around the world?
