¿En que consiste una buena traducción?

Lo más importante es, sin lugar a dudas, serle fiel a la versión original. Esto quiere decir
que el traductor tiene que mantener todo el significado del texto original, incluido el
tono. El tono no es un toque decorativo sino un elemento fundamental del texto, y el
traductor que no se ocupe del tono va a producir una traducción poco convincente. Sin
su tono gracioso, el chiste no es chistoso; sin su tono oral, el dialogo parece irreal.
El traductor siempre tiene que reconstruir un texto usando otras palabras. Pero “en otras
palabras” no quiere decir lo mismo que “palabra por palabra”.
Hay traducciones literales y traducciones interpretativas, y estas son casi siempre
superiores. Los refranes son un buen ejemplo de la diferencia entre la traducción literal
y la interpretativa. Observe la gran diferencia entre las dos versiones de este refrán:

“Dime con quien andas y te diré quien eres”

Traducción literal: Tell me who you walk with and I will tell you who you are.

Traduccion interpretativa: Birds of a feather flock together/ You can tell a man by the
company he keeps.

puede existir la mejor traducción de tal texto para tales y cuales destinatarios, para tales
y cuales fines, y en tal y cual situación histórica”

Role of a Translator

Professional translators are neither walking dictionaries, nor machines that swallow
words in one language then spit them out whole in another.
“Translators are language professionals. They are applied linguists, competent writers,
diplomats, and educated amateurs. Like linguists, translators have to be capable of
discerning subtleties and nuances in their languages, researching terminology and
colloquialisms, and handling new developments in their languages. Like writers,
translators have to be accustomed to working long hours alone on a subject which
interests few people and with a language that few people around them know. Like
diplomats, translators have to be sensitive to the cultural and social differences which
exist in their languages and be capable of addressing these issues when translating. And
like educated amateurs, translators have to know the basics and some of the details
about the subjects they deal with…

…The fundamental rule when you’re not sure of a term or phrase is ask. An important
part of the translator’s role is to communicate with the client -- and a good translator
knows when to ask questions.”
