Geometry – Ms. Bane and Ms.

Barona
Gulf Breeze High School

We are looking forward to working with you on what we are sure will be a successful year!
Parents and students – please read over this letter and sign on the back. This letter should
remain in the math folder throughout the year.

Please email us (banel@santarosa.k12.fl.us or baronask@santarosa.k12.fl.us) with any

thoughts or concerns you have. We will also use apps in Classlink as soon as possible as a
way to extend the learning community outside the classroom. We expect students’ best efforts
on all assignments in class and at home – this is how students will stay successful.

Your job as a parent is to support and encourage your students to do their best, not to
do their work for them. “Do not handicap your children by making their lives easy.”
Robert Heinlein

This course covers geometric terminology, angles, polygons, triangles, quadrilaterals,

polygons, circles, and 3-D geometry.

Grading Policy: The Geometry End of Course Exam counts for 30% of your final average.

50% Tests* & Projects –You will have plenty of notice and are expected to prepare carefully
for chapter tests which count for the largest part of your grade. If you are absent on test
day, you will take it when you return. There may also be a project or two per 9 weeks.
35% Quizzes – Class work, homework, and notes are expected to be labelled and kept
organized in a folder with brads & the Geometry Nation book. Unannounced, short quizzes
over current math topics will occur from time to time. Sometimes you may use your folder
and book to help you on quizzes. If you are absent on quiz day, you will take it when you
return. The lowest grade in this category will be dropped at the end of the 9 weeks.
15% Homework & Class Work – Guided notes, activities, review problems, bell work, etc. will
be assigned in class and for practice at home. You will receive a grade for your effort, for
showing work, and for making corrections. Expect to spend about 20 minutes each night
on math homework. Parent initials at the top of an assignment will merit full credit if the
assignment was not completed but at least 20 minutes of effort and work are shown. The
lowest grade in this category will be dropped.

*Students are expected to identify their mistakes and correct their answers on every HW and
class work assignment. This is also a way to improve low test scores. Corrections can earn up
to 50% of the points lost on the original test score. Students will have up to 20 minutes in
class on the day tests are returned to complete and turn in test corrections. For example, a
score of 70% may be brought up to 85% by re-doing all missed problems correctly and
explaining specifically and thoroughly what each mistake was, thereby proving increased level
of understanding.

Late assignments will not be accepted! This includes assignments left at home, in another
folder, etc. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with his/her assignments.

It is the student’s responsibility to find out what assignments s/he has missed due to absences
by checking http://loribane.weebly.com/ The student has 3 school days in which to complete
missed assignments due to excused absences, including copying notes from a classmate. Per
school policy, work missed due to unexcused absences will result in a 0.
Textbooks and Folders:

Students will be responsible for keeping a math-only folder with brads. The folder will travel to
and from home and school with math work safely inside. We will organize the folders in class.

Please take care to bring your folder and Geometry Nation book (replacement cost $7) to class
every day and keep up with class work and homework.

Students will also have access to supportive websites on Classlink, such as Geometry Nation
(in Algebra Nation app), Khan Academy, My HRW, Desmos, and Office 365. There are many
helpful resources that provide re-teaching, enrichment and self-assessment opportunities.

Classroom guidelines:

1. Be able to say, “I did my best,” every single day, both in and out of class. Be proud of
the work you do. Cheating will result in a referral and a 0 for the assignment, whether
you are cheating or allowing another student to cheat off you. Do your own work to the
best of your ability and you will be successful.
2. No food or drinks other than water are allowed in class.
3. Come to class on time. The 3rd tardy to class (less than 2 minutes after tardy bell or 10
minutes for 1st period) will result in a referral.
4. Always act and speak in a respectful way. Treat others in the classroom and school the
way you want to be treated. Take care of our classroom and class materials by
plugging in laptops, throwing trash away, and not wasting paper, pens, pencils, etc.
5. Cell phones may be used from time to time in class for instructional purposes only. If
you are using your phone for personal reasons during class time, you will fill out a
behavior slip and put your phone away. Second offenses will result in a referral.
Phones must always be zipped up in backpacks during tests and quizzes.

Following these guidelines will result in a stress-free learning environment and a pleasant,
orderly atmosphere. 

Not following the guidelines will result in:

1. Warnings and filling out behavior correction slips.
2. Parental contact and removal from group activities.
3. Referrals or alternate discipline.

Tutoring is offered by Mu Alpha Theta in Mr. Phan’s room 308 on Tuesdays and Thursdays
from 8 – 9 am. Please consider this extremely useful and free resource when you need help!

Materials needed daily:

TI-30Xa calculator (available in class, optional at home), pens & pencils, folder with brads,
lined and graph paper, cell phone or tablet, Geometry Nation book (provided), & a book to read

Sincerely,

Lori Bane
