Class Description: This class in literacy is designed to hone skills in reading, writing, grammar, and discussion. These
skills enable students to be high-functioning and productive members of society- in school, at home, and in their future
workplace.

Our class will explore a wide range of literature. This will include novels, dramas, short stories, poetry, film, and non-
fiction. We will delve into literary analysis, assessment of news publications, development of writing skills, and growth
of interpersonal discussion. Students can expect to interact with classmates in peer discussions and writing feedback. As
we grow in reading and writing, we will apply these skills to relevant areas of life.

There will occasionally be at-home assignments, including reading, writing, and research. Students are responsible for
coming to class prepared EVERY day.

Our major topics of learning will include but are not limited to:

 Writing: Narrative, expository, technical, and persuasive

o The writing process of pre-writing, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing.
 Reading: Poetry, short stories, novels, non-fiction, current event articles, etc.
o We will explore a wide range of genres, characters, points-of-view, and themes.
 Grammar: Sentence construction, vocabulary, mechanics, etc.
 Discussion

Class Website:
Parents and students can access our class website at www.litwithcarr.weebly.com. This syllabus, daily assignments, and
other resources can be found at this site.

Grading Policy:
Grading begins on day one. Students are expected to give their best effort in all that we do in this class.
Here is our grading breakdown:
Homework—15% Projects—20%
Quizzes—15% Class work and participation—30%
Tests—20%

Materials:
Every student will be given a composition book and a folder. In his/her composition, each student will maintain daily
writing assignments and additional notes from lessons. In the folder, students will keep homework, writing portfolio
pieces, and other materials. Students should come to class with their Chromebooks charged and a set of
headphones every day.
1
Returned Work:
Students can expect to have most work returned to them within a week. However, please keep in mind that I have
multiple classes of students. It may take slightly longer to return writing assignments and give them the attention they
deserve. Students who have questions regarding their work are free to discuss grades and assignments after class or
after school.

Test Corrections:
Students who receive less than a 70% on any test may do test corrections to earn up to 50% of missed points.

Late Work: After “final call” has been called for an assignment to be turned in, it is considered late. Assignments
turned in within 24 hours of the due date may earn up to 90% of full credit. Any assignments received more than 24
hours after the due date may earn up to 50% of full credit. It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of late and
missing assignments.

Absence Policy: Students who are aware of future absences in advance should notify me as soon as possible. If I am
able, I will provide make-up work in advance. Students with excused absences have the number of days they were
absent plus one to turn in make-up work. For example, a student absent for three days will have four days (3 + 1) after
their return to turn in make-up work.

Cheating/Plagiarism
This class has a zero-tolerance policy for cheating and plagiarism. Cheating and plagiarism include, but are not limited
to, copying homework, classwork, test responses, projects, or writing pieces from another student or any other source.
Any cheating or plagiarism will result in an automatic zero for that assignment.
