“MOTORCYCLE vs AUTOMOBILE: SAFETY IN PRINT”

The theory that motorcycles were invented before automobiles has its roots. The fact is automobile transport of man (on a three-
wheeled steam tractor) happened in France in 1769. The first automobile carriage for people was invented in 1885 by Karl Benz. The
first motorcycle, called the Reitwagen or Riding Car, coincidentally was also built in 1885 by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. It
spawned a new area of transportation. From that year on, motorcycle accidents have plagued the world. Based on the number of
deaths from automobiles vs the deaths from motorcycles, this presentation examines the risk of riding an instrument of torture (a
motorcycle), instead of motoring around in a four wheeled coffin (a car). Why risk riding a motorcycle instead of driving a car? The
statistics are staggering and bear reading for motorcycle mishap prevention.

“WHO IS A QUALIFIED SAFETY PROFESSIONAL?”

Industrial safety is important as it safeguards human life, especially in high risk areas such as nuclear, aircraft, chemical, oil and gases,
and mining industries, where a fatal mistake can be catastrophic. Industrial Safety reduces risks to people, and processes. Process
control and safety systems are usually merged. Maintaining a safe and healthy working environment is not only an important human
resources issue, it's the law. Whether they're entry-level workers, seasoned veterans, supervisors, or plant managers, the employees
need to understand health and safety risks, the steps they need to take to minimize those risks, and common safety standards and
compliance procedures. Depending on the type of business involved and the organization's needs, the role of safety professional in the
workplace will vary. Safety professionals have a key role in influencing the safety of an industrial organization.
Recent conceptualizations of organizations as complex adaptive systems have put further challenges in our understanding of sa fety
professionals’ work. In light of our increased understanding of the complexity and dynamics of safety-critical organizations is there a
need to rethink the role of safety professionals? The presentation will focus on the underlying principles that the safety professionals
rely on in their work.
