1. What makes reading in a second language different than reading in a first language?
2. What factors help students develop their ESL reading skill?
3. What can an ESL teacher do to help students understand a difficult text that contain
vocabulary word and grammatical structures that the students have not yet acquired?
4. What types of assistance can teachers provide their ESL students to help these students
develop their English reading skill?

ANSWER :

1. Reading is one of the mains skill in English learning. We can improve our vocabulary
collection while reading. Automatically , reading in ESL is different than reading in First
language. There are four factor that make it different such as first, reading in ESL need
grammar competence to understand the material. And then vocabulary collection and the
linguistic knowledge is very needed in reading. The second is sociolinguistic competence
such us the ability of the reader to interpret the passage. The last, Discourse and strategy
competence also necessary to understand the meaning of the passage. In other hand,
reading in ESL need the extra competence, so that make it different. Different from it,
reading in EFL is not harder than ESL, the meaning of the passage can be understand
because the vocabulary always heard and also use when speak in daily activity.

2. According to me, there are two factor that can help students develop their ESL reading
skill, firstly is the appropriate reading material because with the appropriate reading
material, students can easy to read the book. The second factor is motivation because
with highly motivation, students read more book.
3. There are some thing that can teacher do to help students in understanding in a difficult
text that contain vocabulary word and grammatical structures that the students have not
yet acquired:
- Establishing objective.
- Motivation learners.
- Providing students with the stimulating, informative, and relevant reading lesson.
- Chagrin the social structure of the classroom.
- Building the learners’ confidence.
- Teaching strategies for creating and maintaining a high level of motivation.
- Choosing appropriate reading material.

4. The type of assistance can teacher provide their ESL students in develop their English
reading skill :
- Authentic materials
- Pen-pals
- Students- produced material
- Commercial text
- Map reading
- Edited authentic test
