LAID TO REST 9
The Bishop of the Sekondi-Takoradi Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie has challenged
the clergy to discharge their pastoral duties “with zeal and faithfulness.” He made this call during the ordi-
INAUGRATION Pg nation of 12 deacons into the ministerial priesthood on Saturday, 14th July, 2018 at the Star of the Sea Ca-

the litany of complaints received at his office are often not about priests not administering the sacraments
or not going for benedictions, visiting the sick or preparing homilies but money matters. Money has be-
come a major source of tension in the ministry today, he intimated. “Don’t go looking for money but do
your work well and money will look for you” the Bishop retorted.

He further admonished the priests that their responsibility over the household of God is about steward-
ship, faithfulness, being wise and prudent.
The Mass was presided over by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie CSSp and concelebrated by 140
priests. Also present were Msgr. Francis Abuah-Quansah and Msgr. Simon Asamoah, Vicar Generals for the
Sekondi-Takoradi and Wiawso Diocese respectively, and Very Rev. Fr. Francis Arthur, Rector of St. Paul’s
Catholic Seminary, Sowutuom.

“LAITY COUNCIL IS NOT ANOTHER SOCIETY” - BISHOP KWOFIE.
Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie CSSp. has admonished the laity not to see the Laity Council as another “Society” in
the Church, but as a coordinating body of all the lay people and societies. He therefore called for the active involvement
and participation of all lay people of different societies in parishes or dioceses in activities and programmes organized by
the Laity Council.

Bishop Kwofie made these remarks at the 24th EASTER SEMINAR of the Catholic Diocesan Laity Council of Sekondi-
Takoradi which was held at St. Mary’s Minor Seminary, Apowa from 22nd -24th June, 2018. The theme for the seminar
was: “Integral Pastoral Care for the Family in the Light of Amoris Laetitia”.

Bishop Kwofie further charged the Laity not to neglect caring for the sick, the needy, the aged, the abandoned and the
vulnerable in the society because our Church will not be complete if it fails to journey with these people in their strug-
gles.

He also used the occasion to express his gratitude to the diocesan Laity Council executives who suggested to him to es-
tablish a body that will collect religious and consecrated items such as sacred vessels, crucifixes, processional crosses,
monstrance, liturgical vestments, etc. that are no longer in use or have been abandoned in the various Parishes to refur-
bish them and put into use by needy parishes.

Very Rev. Fr. Samuel Ebuley Afful, who gave the key note address, reminded the gathering that “the joy of love assures us
that despite the challenges involved in the institution of marriage, the desire to marry and form a family remains vibrant
especially among the young people”.

Fr. Ebuley Afful stated that even though factors such as economic recess, falling out of love, and domestic violence con-
tribute to the disintegration of family and marriage breakdown. He charged couples to run to their priests first and not to
the law court when faced with these challenges.

In attendance at the opening ceremony were; Most. Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp., Msgr. Francis
Abuah Quansah (Vicar General), Very Rev. Fr. Paul Appiah Himin Asante, Very Rev. Fr. Samuel
Ebuley Afful, Rev. Fr. Anthony Gyan (Chaplain-Diocesan Laity Council), Rev. Fr. Bernard Abekah and Rev. Fr. Ezekiel Takyi.

The three-day seminar was climaxed with a Thanksgiving Mass at the Star of the Sea Cathedral, Takoradi, presided over
by Bishop Kwofie.
HELPING HANDS MEDICAL MISSION
HOLDS OUTREACH IN GHANA.
A team of Volunteers from the USA known as Helping Hands Medical
Mission (HHMM) has embarked on an outreach programme in the Se-
kondi-Takoradi Diocese of Ghana. The weeklong outreach programme
was held in Butre, Egyam and Asem Asa communities in the Ahanta
West District (Western Region). About 900 people from Butre benefited
from the program. While Asem Asa and Egyam also had over 400 and
900 beneficiaries respectively.

The missionaries provided free medical care for thousands of patients in

need of medical attention. Services included eye care, consultations,
distributions of medications, and Natural Family Planning instruction.
The participants also took part in the mission’s spiritual program. The
spiritual programs included daily prayer, Mass, meditation, and sharing
the faith with the people of the town through home visits.

HHMM missionaries are Catholic doctors, nurses, and volunteers who

come from the United States, Germany, Australia, and Canada. Partici-
pants pay their own round-trip airfare, mission fee (food, housing,
ground transportation, etc.) and bring supplies and medicines.

The missionaries were invited to Ghana by Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Eshun,
who also serves as the Local Grounds Organizer. The team included
Monsignor James Harris together with 4 Doctors, 6 Nurses, a seminarian
and 4 volunteers. The HHMM team has embarked on seven previous
outreaches in Ghana. Some communities that have benefited from the
program include Bibiani, Asankragwa and Asafo.

ST. PETER’S SCHOOL; YOU HAVE MADE US PROUD!

We have followed with keen interest the steady and impressive performance of St.
Peter’s Senior High School in the just ended National Science and
Mathematics Quiz of which this illustrious Catholic School emerged
the national champion. It is not the first time St. Peter’s
SHS has emerged the winner of such a stiff national competition. You have once
again proved the worth of our Catholic Schools where we seek to provide quality
education in an atmosphere of discipline, honesty, determination and dedication to
duty.

All Catholic Schools in the country share in your victory and jubilation. Your victory
spurs other Catholic schools on to greater
heights and motivates them and indeed every individual, not only in the Catholic
school system but all other schools, to strive for a better academic performance.

I bring to students of St. Peter’s SHS and all those who accompany you in the
pursuit of academic excellence in your school, whether as teaching or non-teaching
staff, the felicitations of the Catholic Bishops and congratulate you for making all
Catholic Schools and indeed the Catholic family proud.

St. Peter’s, Bravo!!!

Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese and
Episcopal Chairman of Catholic Education
BISHOP KWOFIE LAUNCHES SANITATION AND ANTI-
CORRUPTION CAMPAIGN
Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie CSSp, Bishop of Sekondi Takoradi Diocese, has launched the Sanitation
and Anti-Corruption Campaign of the Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi at the St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish, Air-
force Base, Takoradi during Mass on Sunday, 29th July, 2018 as part of his pastoral visit.

The theme for the campaign, "A Clean Environment in a Corruption-Free Society" is an initiative of the Ghana
Catholic Bishops' Conference launched at the plenary assembly of the National Justice and Peace Commis-
sion which took place in Kumasi a few months ago.

The Campaign aims at creating awareness of the cancer of corruption that is fast eroding our society and to
enable the citizens fight it at their little corners. It also aims at raising awareness of the many ways each per-
son contributes to destroying the environment and the part each person must play to achieve clean environ-
ment through good sanitation practices. The Justice and Peace Commission of the Diocese is leading the
campaign in the Diocese and plans to replicate this launch in the various parishes of the Diocese and also
undertake awareness-creation programmes.

Speaking to the congregation, Bishop Kwofie mentioned that as Catholics, we have a responsibility to be
good stewards of our environment and also to refrain from corrupt practises. He said that sanitation and
hygiene are fundamental requirements for good health and development. Poor sanitation and dirty environ-
ment are therefore a danger to the quality of life of people. He said that if we learn to improve environ-
mental sanitation, it will significantly impact on human and animal health. For this reason, the Diocese wishes
to offer this service as its social responsibility.
On corruption, the Bishop said that we easily point figures at politicians and people at high positions in the
society when we speak of corruption disregarding the fact that corrupt practices are rampant in the society
and no one is exempt of it. He said that a major cause of corrupt practices is greed which is considered in
the Church’s teachings as capital sin. He said, “the fight against corruption in our county and for a clean envi-
ronment is everybody’s business. All of us have a role to play".

LADIES AUXILLIARY, KSJI LAUNCHES GOLDEN JUBILEE

The Officers and Ladies of Star of the Sea Ladies’ Auxiliary #330, Knights of St. John International, Takoradi, lunched
activities to mark the society’s Golden Jubilee celebration on Sunday, 29th July, 2018 with a Eucharistic Celebration at
the Star of the Sea Cathedral, Takoradi.

Very Rev. Fr. Peter Ekow Kaitoo, who presided over the Eucharistic celebration, drew the attention of the congrega-
tion to the works of the prophet Elijah and our Lord Jesus Christ who fed the hungry with bread thus giving us a prac-
tical example of God’s care for His people.

Fr. Kaitoo urged members of the Society to continue to support the Church through its activities of providing relief to
the poor and needy. He intimated that providing for the poor is an intrinsic attribute of Christianity and all must en-
deavor to emulate the example of Christ and His prophets.

In a launching address, Mrs. Baaba Otoo mentioned that the Auxiliary in Takoradi has been able to nurture and estab-
lish branches of the auxiliary in Tarkwa, Effiakuma and Agona Nkwanta. She also paid tribute to the founding mem-
bers of the society for putting up a solid foundation that has seen the Auxiliary grow from strength to strength.

The theme for the yearlong celebration is “The role of a modern woman in the Church “

The society was presented with a Charter by the Supreme Ladies Auxiliary, which has its headquarters in the United
States of America, and was inaugurated on 12th April, 1969 by Most Rev. John Kodwo Amissah, then Archbishop of
Cape Coast.

Also present at the celebration to support the Ladies’ Auxiliary were Knights of Star of the Sea Commandery #397,

KUDOS, DIOCESAN JUSTICE AND PEACE COMMISION
The Diocesan Justice and Peace Commission in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung through the Depart-
ment of Governance , Justice and Peace Commission of the National Cathoolic Secretariat has organized Town Hall
Meetings for three selected Districts Assemblies covering towns within the Catholic Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi. The
towns were Sekondi, Takoradi, New Takoradi, Kojokrom, Apowa, Agona Nkwanta, Tarkwa and New Atuabo.

The program saw members of those communities were taken through the mode at which the assembly discharged its
duties and the role of the citizenry in the communities.

This gave members of the various communities the opportunity to identify some development projects which needed
immediate attention.

The idea of the Town Hall Meetings is to ensure that development projects undertaken in the communities are not im-
position from the Assemblies but addresses the needs of the people.

We than Very Rev. Fr. Clement Adjei, the Director and Mr. Nick Tawiah (Diocesan President), Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Bis-
sue (Treasure), and Mr. Albert Abakah-Pobee (Secretary) for this initiative of bringing governance to the door step of
the ordinary citizen to ensure that their contributions are taken on board. A successful implementation of this program
should ensure that follow ups are done to see to the implementations of solutions to the various challenges identified
in the communities.

Although he admits that no qualified student should be denied
access to Senior High education due to lack of money, he is also of
the view that there is need to discourage whole-sale promotion of
students and make sure that students make the required grade to
merit promotion in order not to sacrifice quality for numbers. He
added that one of the ways government will guarantee success is
to engage stakeholders in “frank discussions” at this early stage so
that the new system shall be owned by all as a national program
that will contribute to the development of our country. “This will
also assure the stability needed in our educational delivery”, he
said. He said that parents and other stakeholders have genuine
fear of this new development in education delivery in the country
as they do not know where it will land us.
