How Christ gives himself in word and sacrament isn’t easy to understand. Debates within
Church history show us this. The Jews’ reaction in our Gospel reading reminds us that even
those who knew Jesus found it difficult to understand. God empties himself to and for us in
Christ. God calls us to himself in Christ. Sometimes those whom God calls to himself surprise
us and upset our models of leadership. We’re reminded that even those who knew Jesus were
aghast that he could be God’s Messiah, let alone God himself.
