THE PROBLEM

PRECIOUS
SPECTRUM CAPACITY

ARPU

APPLICATIONS
HIGHER
THROUGHPUT

6
Capture from a Cambium Test Location

7
The situation with unlicensed spectrum

-Too many operators using the same spectrum

-People using higher power than they should
-Poor shielding, protection on most equipment out there

What to do?
Interference is everywhere – look for the next clean channel
Buy “extra” hardware to protect your own towers
Use LOTS of spectrum to create channel separation

The truth
The biggest source of interference is your own equipment !

ePMP Solves your self-interference problems
• Only platform in the industry that offers GPS Synchronization
that works in this price range

• Use the same two frequencies on a tower with only 5 MHz of

guard band

• Use 4 frequencies for towers across a whole geographic area

• No more setting Tx power on each SM. ePMP supports

Automatic Transmit Power Control

• Better F/B ratio – No more 3rd party hardware

The need to serve more customers per AP

16
ePMP Supports 120 SMs to an AP!
• Ground up design of a state of the art MAC layer and
Scheduling system

• AP is the master who manages every Tx/Rx in the

sector
• Tightly controlled Tx/Rx timings that are in sync
with all other APs with GPS sync
• No more weak SM taking down sector tput
• Adaptive modulation that reacts to interference
and maximizes tput

17
Competitor’s Polling Protocols

Transmit and receive one STA at a time

Propagation delay is PD is incurred 3 times

compensated for each for each UL
transmission. ACK/NACKs transmission (One for
and retries occurring per Poll and one for UL
Tx & Rx data and one for ACK)

What does this mean?

• Individual Tx/Rx, Propagation delay all adds up to less time for actual data
transmission.
• With increased #of subscribers, latency starts going up drastically and significantly
reducing TCP tput
• Interference in one SM could engage CCA, retries and increase latency for overall
sector
ePMP MAC Protocol Efficiency
• ePMP has tight control over timing in UL & DL
• Propagation Delay to all STAs at different distances is
accommodated for in the TTRG and through timing advance.

• Advanced over the air QOS
• Automatic prioritization of VOIP

• Dynamic Rate Adapt mechanism
that detects voice and minimized
jitter

26
Quality of Service (QoS)
ePMP Supports 3 Priority Levels
1. Voice Priority (Always Highest when Enabled)
2. High Priority
3. Low Priority
• Unicast Traffic assigned to a priority level by L2/L3 packet markings
• Broadcast/Multicast Traffic can be configured to be High or Low Priority
• Data is scheduled for OTA Transmission according to its priority

Prioritization Can be Altered by SM Priority

SM Priority
• Normal - No Change to Data Priority
• High - All non-Voice Ingress (Uplink) Traffic Treated as High Priority
• Low - All non-Voice Ingress (Uplink) Traffic Treated as Low Priority

L2 Markings: VLAN, CoS, EtherType, MAC / L3 Markings: IP, DSCP

VOIP on ePMP
ePMP utilizes the following mechanisms for VOIP delivery
• DL/UL automatic prioritization of VOIP packets within the queues of the
radio.
• High priority/ more frequent bandwidth allocation to SMs carrying VOIP
traffic
• SMs with VoIP Packets to send will “piggyback” a bandwidth request onto
uplink data transfer

STA can send VOIP packet but also

request BW for the next voip
packet by piggy backing. This
allows AP to schedule the STA
sooner

How to migrate?
Option 1
Inter-operate with other WiFi based systems in standard
WiFi mode. Flip on the ePMP SM Wifi Mode.
Run in WiFi mode and migrate all CPEs to ePMP and then
swap out the AP.
Configuration management supported by CNS

Option 2 (Available in a near future SW release)

ePMP AP running in WiFi mode. Flip all other CPEs to WiFi
mode, convert CPEs to ePMP and one day switch sector to
your favorite ePMP mode of operation

Option 1 & 2 = operating in WiFi mode for a while BUT better than
a total forklift

Option 3
Execute an aggressive plan and switch to ePMP sector by
sector. The ROI in frequency re-use, scalability is easily
realized
