Rationale

Social Media Sites used in various purposes to the people around the

world, essentially, to those who are far from their families. Example of that is

Facebook, facebook, is used for connecting bonds to other person through

electronic gadgets. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college

roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Severin, Andrew

McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The website’s membership was

initially limited by the founder to Harvard students, but was expanded to other

colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually

added support for students at various other universities before opening to high

school students, and eventually to anyone aged 13 and over.

According to Daniel Nations (June 06, 2010). “Facebook is a free social

networking web platform that promotes and facilities interaction between friends,

family and colleagues.” It also notifies us people about the happenings to our

young celebrities we’ve like, the disasters happen in various countries and also the

happenings in our daily lives. Facebook also enables us to use like, comment, and

even share opinions even if we don’t see things personally.

Facebook is considered as one of the biggest free social networking web

platform that influences the users to interact with other users through this platform.

Users tend to disclose their personal lives to their friends and families and also to

the public. This allowing them to be notified by having a short discussion with other

people about what they wanted to know. Wether they live it or not, but also they
can do a free comment about the happenings and even share it to their love ones

with a single click on the app or website.

The problem of this study is how facebook affects to students on the social

behavior. This is very common in Grade 11 Information and Communication

Technology (ICT) students day class of Asian Learning Center (ALC) of the effects

of Facebook on social behaviors. The way that users initiate sudden changes to

their social behaviors, many aspects would be affected through it. These effects of

facebook are not a serious problem to the society but a major problem among

users in the digital world. It can increase the cause of antisocial tendencies and

sudden changes because people are not directly communicating with each other.

But some argue that facebook has affected to social life and activity of people in

various ways.

According to the study of (Tondo High School Manila students S.Y. 2012-

2013, pg.21) “Facebook is still just internet operated and personal interaction and

real relationships are way better than networking conversation and relationships.”

There is a lot of changes when using social media sites such as facebook. It can

affect how you talk and face people in their virtual world. Through this, you can

easily connect to other people but it is not totally the same when you communicate

personally.

This study is conceived because this topic is common on today’s generation

and also the researchers are interested to gather the possible effects of facebook

to the student’s socialization behavior.

The main objective of this study is to determine how Facebook affect on the

social behavior to students and how to solve the said problem and also to provide

some information and ideas to the readers, and the researcher can discover new

things and can gain knowledge and ideas as well.

This study is can conceptualize within the framework of drawn observation

and realities particularly in the vicinity.

Theoretical Background

This research argues that facebook can affect the social behaviors of

students in Asian Learning Center, Sangi-Road, Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City.

This research acquires by the following theories, Leon Festinger’s Social

Comparison Theory, Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory and Wilhelm

Dilthey’s Social Mirror Theory.

Many of the ICT students, have a problematic behavior on social media

(this includes facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube etc.) There are possible

theories can be used in order to navigate these (3) theories in correlational to our

research argument presented. The theories that we propose have a direct intact to

the behavioral problems and how to handle when they grasp these following

theories.

First theory is the Social Comparison Theory (SCT). Social Comparison

Theory, initially proposed by social psychologist Leon Festinger in 1954, centers

on the belief that there is a drive within individuals to gain accurate self-

evaluations. The theory explains how individuals evaluate their own opinions and

abilities by comparing themselves to other in order to reduce uncertainty in these

domains, and learn how to define the self. Festinger hypothesized that when there

is a range of opinion or ability in a group, the relative strength of the three

manifestation of pressure toward uniformity will be different for those who are

close to the mode of the group than for those who are distant from the mode.

According to the study of the ( University of Michigan pg.4) “ most people

compare themselves to others every day, whether they mean to do so or not. In

fact, it seems social the social comparison is a natural and expected part of the

human experience.” Facebook users use this comparison method to define and

criticize someone by their look and abilities. This will help to guide them to give

their own definition for themselves and to enhance their intellectual abilities by

comparing themselves to others. Hence, users initiate their personal willingness to

enhance their intellectual abilities and strengths to serve as their assets in

comparing themselves to others.

Second theory is Social Learning Theory (SLT), initially proposed by a

Canadian Psychologist Albert Bandura, one of the most influential theories of

learning and development the social learning theory (Bandura, 2007, p.69).

Bandura stated that “most human behaviour is learned observationally through

modeling: from observing others one forms an idea of how new behaviors are

performed, and on later occasions this coded information serves as a guide for

action” (Bandura, 1977). Albert Bandura’s explain how children/students learn in

social environments by observing and then initiating the behavior of others. In

essence, believed that learning could not be fully explained simply through

reinforcement, but the presence of others was also an influence. He noticed that

the consequences of an observed behavior often determined whether or not

children/students adopted the behavior themselves.

According to the study of (facebook usage, socialization and academic

performance, 2015, pg.2) “Individual interaction with peers, social support from

peers and their understanding of the situations are important factors which effect

individual learning outcome.” The individuals that are observed are called models.

In society, children are surrounded by many influential models, such as parents

within the family, characters on children’s TV, Friends within their peer group, And

teachers at school and co users of social media sites. Students pay attention to

some of these people (models) and encode their behavior. At a later time they

may initiate (i,e., copy) the behavior they have observed.

Lastly, is the Social Mirror Theory is a Theory that is contributed by

Wilhelm Dilthey. The Theory involves the state of people that are not capable of

self-reflection without taking into consideration a peer’s interpretation of the

experience. In other words, people define and resolve their internal musings

through other viewpoint. It suggests that people, in general, are not capable of

self-reflection without taking into consideration a peer’s interpretation of the

experience. Burgon and Haie (1984) conceptualized relational communication as

the verbal and nonverbal themes present in people’s communication that define an

interpersonal relationship.

According to (cyberpsychology, behavior and Social Networking journal,

Feb.24) “ Unlike a mirror, which reminds us of who we really are and may have a

negative effect on self-esteem if that image does not match with our ideal,

facebook can show a positive version of ourselves.” Hancook said. Facebook can

help to improve the self-esteem of users because they are willing to take risk to
see the other version of their selves. They are willing to search ways just to

improve their selves.

As the summary of the theories tackled above they both have one goal to

minimize the societal behavior which affects the other users in the society, to get

the point on how facebook affect on social behavior to students and they

overcome those behaviors.

Within the framework of the background across the theories of effects of

facebook on social behavior, the study is formulated and supported by a

colloquium of related studies.
