Course Overview

 Aim: To enable you to develop an understanding and

appreciation of the factors which affect the design and
operation of both digital and analogue optical fibre
communication systems.

Assumed Knowledge

 You should be familiar with

 the properties of optical fibres (multimode and single-mode fibres,

fibre attenuation, dispersion, preferred wavelengths of operation)
 basic components of an optical fibre system (optical sources, fibres,
photodetectors, optical receivers)

 It is advisable that you have successfully completed the course

EEET2115 (Communication Engineering 2) or equivalent studies

Optical Fibre Systems and Networks

Course Description

 This Course builds on earlier studies to develop a fuller

understanding of the components, design and operation of
optical fibre systems and networks
 characteristics and limitations of system components (laser diodes,
optical modulators, optical fibre, optical amplifiers, optical receivers)
 principles of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems,
RF photonic systems and passive optical networks (PONs)
 factors affecting the performance of both digital and analogue
optical fibre transmission systems

Learning Outcomes

 On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

 explain the principles of operation of various optical fibre

communication systems and networks
 analyse the performance of various digital and analogue optical fibre
systems
 calculate various key parameters of fibre systems, including the
system power budget and rise-time budget, receiver noise, Q factor,
bit error rate, and the maximum usable bit rate of a digital optical fibre
transmission system
