The Artvin Republic Exploration Licensing Round – May 2018

 Petroleum Source Rock in the Ordu-Rize Rift Basin.

 Artvin sub-basin is in the SE quadrant of the the major Ordu-Rize Rift Basin, and petroliferous in neighbouring Republic of Trabzon.
 Most of the oil and gas in the onshore area and Republic of Trabzon oil fields has been generated from organic-rich shales of
lacustrine origin within the Paleogene Gaga Group.
 During Paleogene time large freshwater lake systems developed within structurally controlled rift basins.
 The estimated source rock isopach is up to 250 m in the centre of the synrift. Elsewhere the source isopach thins out.

 Palynology indicates freshwater conditions prevailed. However, occurrences of slightly saline conditions suggest minor climatic
changes, chemical stratification, or occasional marine incursions.
 Tropical climatic conditions with no annual lake turnover favored lacustrine anoxia and deposition of nonmarine hydrocarbon
source beds.

 Factors that have contributed to the prolific oil production of Ordu-Rize Rift Basin include presence of graben sequences with thick
organic-rich lacustrine shales, an overlying marine sag sequence with excellent reservoirs, development of early structures and
high basin heat flows. The shallow Pre-Tertiary basement and thin sediments of the Ordu-Rize Rift Basin are characterized by a
very high geothermal gradient, with an average gradient of 6.0 °C/100 m (3.33 °F/100′).

 Distribution of the oilfields in the Ordu-Rize Rift Basin is largely compressional structures and fault controlled. The oil has migrated
vertically up the faults and out of the Eocene-Oligocene age Gaga Group shales, and laterally and flanks of the graben, filling
younger, Miocene age Shallow, Middle and Deep Formation reservoirs. Lateral migration distance is generally short, ranging up to
25 km. The Over-Pressured zones hydrocarbon potential is highly speculative.
