SAILOR 250/500 – Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter

Document Name: SAILOR 250/500 – Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter Revision: D

Introduction: This document describes the Digi One SP Ethernet to RS-232 converter and how it can be
configured to be used with an SAILOR FleetBroadband terminal in order to offer remote access to a
RS-232 device onboard a vessel from a shore office.

Typical Users: ► Radar maintenance engineers

► Bridge System maintenance engineers
► TV antenna maintenance engineers
► Engine monitoring equipment

Product Description: More and more, electronic devices used in all types of
commercial applications are being network-enabled so that data
from those devices can be accessed, evaluated and utilized in
real time. The Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter is a simple and
cost-effective solution for migrating electronic devices to this
emerging world of networked device collaboration.
The Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter delivers basic RS-232-to-
Ethernet connectivity to any RS-232 device or system onboard a
vessel. This can for example be Radars, Bridge Systems or TV
antennas.
Remote access to such equipment can save enormous time,
money and logistic instead of sending a service technician
onboard.

Instructions: The Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter can be used in a lot of scenarios to offer remote access to
RS-232 equipment onboard vessels. The Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter makes it possible for
support technicians at shore to get remote access to systems onboard in order to calibrate, test,
diagnostic and software upgrade these systems.
This document describes how remote access to an Inmarsat-C terminal can be established through
Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter and a SAILOR FleetBroadband terminal. See system overview on
figure 1 below.

Figure 1: System overview

Installation of The PC at headquarter was installed with a Realport driver which comes together with the Digi
Realport driver at Ethernet to RS-232 converter. This driver maps a virtual COM port to the Ethernet interface of the
Headquarter: PC. This virtual COM port number must match a COM port supported by the software used to control
the remote system. In this case we map a COM port for the HyperTerminal software.

Start installation of the Real Port driver by inserting the CD that came with the Digi One SP device.
The CD will automatically start up with a window where it is possible to select different options to
install. See figure 2 below:

Click the “Software install optional software” bubble and the window seen in figure 3 will appear.

Figure 3: Select Software To Install

Select “RealPort Driver” and press “Install”. Now the window shown in figure 4 will appear.

Figure 4: Digi RealPort Setup Wizard

Select “Add a New Device” and press the “Next” button without having set up the Digi Ethernet to
RS-232 Converter yet. Now the window in figure 5 will appear. After a few seconds the scanning for
devices will end and no devices will be in the list.

Press the “Next” button to get to the window shown in figure 6 below:

Figure 6: Digi One SP settings

Enter an appropriate name for the remote RS-232 device and select 1 RS-232 ports as this is what
the Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter supports.
Enter the static public IP address for the SIM card used in the SAILOR FleetBroadband terminal. The
TCP Port can be changed if needed but is default set to 771. This is the port number that needs to be
forwarded in the SAILOR FleetBroadband to the IP address of the Digi Ethernet to RS-232
Converter. See under configuration of the SAILOR FleetBroadband for more details.
Press “Next” button to get to the next window shown in figure 7 below:

Press “Next” button to finish the installation of the virtual COM port driver.

Configuration of the The Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter is configured by connecting it with an Ethernet cable to a
Digi Ethernet to RS- PC’s LAN interface. Switch on the Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter by connecting its power supply.
232 Converter: On the PC change the IP address to a static IP 192.168.1.10. See figure 8 below:

Figure 8: Static IP configuration

Accredited Solution SAILOR 250/500 – Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Page 6/10

Press OK and start a command prompt in order to enter the arp command shown in figure 9 below.
The arp command syntax is:

arp –s <IP_ADDRESS> <MAC_ADDRESS>

Where the MAC address is the the MAC of the Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter which is written on
the label underneath the Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter. And the IP address is the IP address
given to the Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter.

Figure 9: Arp setting

Now power off and on the Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter and wait approximately 1 minute until
the device has booted up and initialised the IP address 192.168.1.99.
Start up an Internet browser and enter the site: http://192.168.1.99 and log in window will appear.
See Figure 10. The default username and password is: “root” and “dbps”.

Select the “Network” menu to go to the web site shown in figure 12 and configure the IP settings as
shown. Then press “Apply” button and reboot the Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter to make the
changes active.

Configuration of Now disconnect the Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter from the PC and it is ready to be connected
SAILOR to the SAILOR FleetBroadband.
FleetBroadband: NOTE: Remember to set the IP settings back to DHCP on the PC’s LAN interface.

Connect the PC’s LAN interface to the SAILOR FleetBroadband LAN interface and switch on the
SAILOR FleetBroadband. After boot up enter the built-in web server of the SAILOR FleetBroadband
teminal at http://192.168.0.1, see figure 13.

Figure 13: SAILOR FleetBroadband built-in web server

The Digi Ethernet to RS-232 Converter was configured with a static IP address 192.168.0.100 and
the SAILOR FleetBroadband terminal was configured with default factory settings to Router Mode.
Port forwarding was configured to forward all incoming IP traffic on port 771 to IP address
192.168.0.100 as the RealPort driver uses port 771 to communicate with the Digi Ethernet to RS-232
converter. Refer to figure 6 above.
Go to “SETTINGS”, “LAN”, “PORT FORWARD” and configure the Port Forwarding as shown in figure
14 below:

Figure 14: SAILOR FleetBroadband Port Forwarding Settings

The system is now ready to be setup as shown in the system overview in figure 1.

Note: The RS-232 device and controlling software must be able to handle the delay in answers that are
introduced by the satellite link. Testing done with a mini-C terminal connected to the Digi Ethernet to
RS-232 and controlled using HyperTerminal worked fine. But when the HyperTerminal was
exchanged with easyMail software it did not work satisfactory because the easyMail software times
out when it does not receive the command replies within 2 seconds which is a limit in the easyMail
software.

Tested: The FleetBroadband was online with Standard data.

The mini-C was configured remotely via the Internet using HyperTerminal.
It was tested that the hardware status of the mini-C could be received and that several of the mini-C
settings could be configured remotely, such as DNID configuration, SSAS settings etc.
