Soil Remediation Buenaventura
CONTEXT
Minera La Zanja is a subsidiary of Buenaventura (BVN) that produces
gold (0.9M ounces of gold). Buenaventura will develop its closing period
from 2018 to 2040.
According to Peruvian Law, the mining company needs to remediate soil Intervention on site
to be able to close the mine. Recollection
Disposal
May 2018, Executed NDA between Suez and Minera la Zanja Treatment
LOCATION Disposal REHAB-ARTT
Ground water treatment
Cajamarca, City North of Lima 800km. Pyrotechnical
decontamination
CURRENT SITUATION
Buenaventura develops the remediation of soils using technosols
technology in an area of 100ha-1000ha due to the PH <4 of its industrial
waters and the contamination with heavy metals: Fe, Mn, Mg, Al.
Suez develops industrial solutions with Buenaventura to abate metals in
runoff water and mineral production.

Soil Remediation Buenaventura
SOLUTION. INTEGRAL SOLUTION FOR SOIL REMEDIATION MINE CLOSURE
COVERAGE: US$ 9
Disposal: Plantation of Technosols in the affected areas US$ 1.5
REVEGETATION:
TRANSPORT: US$ 1-4
PROFILED: US$ 0
Maintenance: Continuous control and monitoring of water CONFORMATION: US$ 1
MAINTENANCE: US$ 1
qualities (PH, Mg, Mn, Al) OTHERS: US$ 6
Issues
Depollution of one of UK’s largest industrial complex (former coal mine
and chemical production site)
Challenging contaminants including hydrocarbons, heavy metals,
cyanides as well as Waste chemical products
Solutions
On-site soil remediation: a total of 98 hectare land
Earthworks, pre-treatment and screening, bio-remediation, thermal desorption,
coverage and restoration of green areas
Benefits
1,500,000 m3 of material excavated
400,000 tons for thermal treatment
Reconversion into a conservation area (reintroduction of wildlife +
habitations)
Material recovery : Concrete crushed for reuse on site 1998 2014
Pollution Description
Heavy metals (As, Ni, Cd, Hg, Zn, etc)
Organic chemicals (phenol, polyaromatics, diesel, petrol, etc)
Cyanates
Polluted area: 98 h
Project Description
In 2006 a consortium including SE started the design and
engineering phase under the authority of the Governmental
East Midlands Development Agency
Remediation plan mainly consisted of:
Waste sorting
Bioremediation
Thermal desorption
Rehabilitation of the site

Engie’s Opportunities
Coal to Biomass
Fly Ashes
14 2 Options:
1.- Implement fireproof systems and convert charcoal cellars
2.- Convert boilers' systems.
Engie looks forward to Biomass suppliers to replace charcoal with Biomass up to 51% of their current
capacity.
Needs are significant for biomass (657 kt/y) Sometime It can come from agriculture as it does with
sugar can in Brasil. We understand Engie is expert in producing biomass from forest/agriculture in
some countries.
Suez is expert in producing biomass from waste wood and also from forest. Suez deals with 1.3 mt
of wood. We could help Engie securing Biomass with our Network.
Regarding waste wood It has to be explored if the mines industry producers enough wood from
pallet.
We can help Engie by sourcing and producing at their specification Solid Residual Fuel from
industrial Waste. Possibility to source 20 -40 Kt of SRF from industrial waste has to be explored.
Depending on Engie flexibility to use RDF (Residual Derived Fuel) some municipal waste can be
used to produce RDF. The population of Antofagasta is 400 000 inhabitants. Possibility to source 20
-40 Ktod SRF from municipal waste has to be explored.
We can help Engie by sourcing and producing at their specification Solid Residual Fuel from Tires.
Suez has several plants in Europe where shredded tires was produced for the cement industry. Local
Volumes, especially from them mines, have to be investigated. *Local regulation and technical
specification must also be taken into account regarding SRF from tires.
issues
o Produce Green Energy
o Transform a coal fired CHP into a biomass CHP
o Plant inaugurated in march 2015
o Fuel specification compliance (Grade A, B, C wood)
o Deliveries only by truck
solutions
o RWE has constructed a 50MW biomass CHP plant
o Project cost - £220m
benefits
Tullis Russell’s paper mill in Fife, Scotland, UK
o Shift coal to recycled wood lead to CO2 reduction by 250k tpa 50MW biomass CHP plant
o Fuel production: 240k tpa of recycled wood per annum Fuel production 240 k tpa
Objective
Prepare Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) to be used as alternative fuel for large fuel
consumers: cement industry, lime industry, steel industry, chemical industry, glass
industry, Co-firing coal fired power stations, global market.
Solutions
Production of SRF for burning by cement manufacturer CEMEX in its kiln close to
the site
Develop a dedicated facility based on a long term delivery contract with CEMEX UK
Malpass plant trading up to 20 kt and producing up to 100 kt
SRF at 17 MJ/kg according to CEMEX fuel specification
Benefits
Long-term fuel delivery for CEMEX with quality and price stability
Reduction of CO2 footprint
To determine the most adapted recovery routes for biomass ashes, Suez considers:
The nature of the biomass used for boiler feeding
The local regulations
The ash type
The ash quality
physical and chemical conditions.
• Tees valley EfW plant has an ash processing • Fibre Excellence, paper manufacturer,
facility for a 99.8% recovery rate of the waste France: manufacture and
commercialization of a new standardized

since 2012
• Valomet UK, goes even further by treating
ultra-fine non-ferrous metals from bottom • Isoroy, France: from 2007 to 2011, 1500
to 2000 tons of ashes per year were
