WHY CHILE?
i) Universal access to energetic services; and
ii) Elimination of coal of the energetic matrix.
“Decarbonation moves us gradually to a clean energy matrix that
benefits current and future generations regarding local contaminants
that shall allow Green growing and low Carbone issuance for our
economy.”
January 2018: Agreement between the Government of Chile and
Charcoal generator companies:
No new Coal Projects without Carbone capture and storage systems
or other new technologies;
Calendar to close gradually the operation of coal plants without
Carbone capture and storage systems or other new technologies ;
Decarbonization Studies current coal unities (technical, financial,
environ)
Evaluation of the decarbonization effects (industrial, social, labor,
economics, supply, technologies and environmental)
Efficient utilization of the current infrastructure associated to plants,
ports, transmission lines considering conversion and close of charcoal
plants.

COAL REPLACEMENT
Context & understanding for Engie needs
1 Location
1 Boilers located in the Thermoelectric Plant “Hornitos” (North of Chile). The thermoelectric Plants (Andinas
Gas

3 Biomass. The charcoal plants CTA and CTH, have a gross performance of 165 MW each, and started
6 1 their operation in the 1st semester of 2011.
1 1
1 1
2 24 NEED, Opportunity to use Biomass in boilers including pellets and wood fulfilling technical
1 specific requirements to study the economic feasibility.

14 2 Options:
1.- Implement fireproof systems and convert charcoal cellars
2.- Convert boilers' systems.

Engie looks forward to Biomass suppliers to replace charcoal with Biomass up to 51% of their current
capacity.

¿Biomass, SRF, alternatives?

Local SUEZ’s branches
Biomass + pallet wood from mining companies.
1.- Introduce 5-10% alternative fuel (1800 tons per day - 657 kt / year)
2.- Convert 100% boilers
Possible options for alternative fuels
Biomass

Needs are significant for biomass (657 kt/y) Sometime It can come from agriculture as it does with
sugar can in Brasil. We understand Engie is expert in producing biomass from forest/agriculture in
some countries.

Suez is expert in producing biomass from waste wood and also from forest. Suez deals with 1.3 mt
of wood. We could help Engie securing Biomass with our Network.

Regarding waste wood It has to be explored if the mines industry producers enough wood from
pallet.

Alternative fuel from Waste

We can help Engie by sourcing and producing at their specification Solid Residual Fuel from
industrial Waste. Possibility to source 20 -40 Kt of SRF from industrial waste has to be explored.

Depending on Engie flexibility to use RDF (Residual Derived Fuel) some municipal waste can be
used to produce RDF. The population of Antofagasta is 400 000 inhabitants. Possibility to source 20
-40 Ktod SRF from municipal waste has to be explored.

Alternative fuel from tire

We can help Engie by sourcing and producing at their specification Solid Residual Fuel from Tires.
Suez has several plants in Europe where shredded tires was produced for the cement industry. Local
Volumes, especially from them mines, have to be investigated. *Local regulation and technical
specification must also be taken into account regarding SRF from tires.

Robin facility, Roussillon, France
Green and local energy for one of the largest
chemical platforms in France
• The company diversified its energetic resources coming essentially from
coal and gas and the energetic need is equivalent to the consumption of
150,000 citizens.
• The main purpose is to reduce at least 20% of the CO2 issuance to 2020
and provide 20% of alternative fuels, including biomass among them.
• Local collection 150 kms including wood and other fuels.
• 60,000 tons of biofuel collected
• Use of non-recyclable wood waste: mix forestry by-products, pulp waste
from the paper industry, and wood waste treated with various chemical
products.
• 15 % reduction of coal
• more than 85% of the energy contained in that fuel is recovered as steam
and supply power and heating to 15 manufacturers on Roussillon’s
chemical platform.
• Reduction of 56,000 tons of CO2 emissions, per annum in the platform

ASHES

31 YOUNG TALENT TASK FORCE R&R

Recovery of ashes
ENGIE produces 47mton/year fly ashes. Currently they:
• Give the ashes for free to cement companies
• Develop a pilot program to build bricks in the Power Station in Mejillones, with low
performance considering the produced amount of ashes.
• Very Low % of ashes used.

To determine the most adapted recovery routes for biomass ashes, Suez considers:
The nature of the biomass used for boiler feeding
The local regulations
The ash type
The ash quality
physical and chemical conditions.

Organo-mineral fertilizers or as raw material for the production of mineral fertilizers.

Composting: Suez operates more than 60 composting sites in France. The ashes are
stored and transported to one of Suez composting site in order to be introduced in the
composting process
