Lab Session 2 – Modified Exercises

Exercise 11

Change the IP address of your workstation as given in the topology. Delete the entries of all hosts
other than your own workstation from your host’s ARP Table.

Capture packets on all hosts using the command below:

Group A, B
tcpdump –enx

Then, do the following three experiments:

Group A
1. Execute telnet from VAYU – a host with a duplicate IP address, to KENCHI – a host with
a unique IP address. Then telnet from APAH – the other host with duplicate IP address,
to KENCHI – the same target as before.
Save the ARP tables in all the hosts in your group.
2. Execute telnet 128.238.66.102 from KENCHI. Which host provides the TELNET
connection? Why?
3. Execute telnet 128.238.66.102 from YACHI. Which host provides the TELNET
connection? Why?

Group B

1. Execute telnet from KENCHI_1 – a host with a duplicate IP address, to AGNI_1 – a host
with a unique IP address. Then telnet from GUCHI_1 – the other host with duplicate IP
address, to AGNI_1 – the same target as before.
Save the ARP tables in all the hosts in your group.
2. Execute telnet 128.238.66.107 from AGNI_1. Which host provides the TELNET
connection? Why?
3. Execute telnet 128.238.66.107 from APAH_1. Which host provides the TELNET
connection? Why?

LAB REPORT

Explain what happened in the first step in detail giving reasons. Answer the questions asked in
the second and the third steps.

Exercise 12

Change the IP address of your workstation as given in the topology. Note that two hosts in each
group have a different subnet mask than the others.

Capture packets on all hosts using the command below:

Group A, B, C, D
tcpdump –e

for the following cases:

Group A
1. When VAYU pings AGNI.
2. When VAYU pings APAH.
3. When AGNI pings VAYU.
4. When APAH pings VAYU.

Group B
1. When FENCHI pings KENCHI.
2. When GUCHI pings YACHI.
3. When KENCHI pings GUCHI.
4. When YACHI pings FENCHI.

Group C
1. When KENCHI_1 pings AGNI_1.
2. When GUCHI_1 pings APAH_1.
3. When AGNI_1 pings GUCHI_1.
4. When APAH_1 pings KENCHI_1.

Save the ping outputs in each case. To avoid confusion the steps must be done in order, one
after the other.

LAB REPORT

Explain the reasons for the different ping outputs for each case looking at the packets captured.

Further changes may be made during the Lab itself, after which this document will be updated. Any change made to this
document will also be announced.
