b) Give general design procedure for a machine component. 16l

c) Enlist different theories of elastic failure giving area of its application. [6]

Q2) a) Explain the design procedure of knuckle joint with neat sketch. 16]
b) A lever-loaded safety valve is 50 mm in diameter. It is required to blow
off steam at 1.5 Nirnm2. Design the mild steel lever of rectangular cross
section, if the permissible stresses are 70Nlmm2 in tension,52.5 N/mm2
in shear and24.5 N/mm2 in bearing. The pin is made of same material as
that of the lever. The distance from the fulcrum to the dead weight of the
lever is 800 mm and the distance between the fulcrum pin and valve
spindle link pin is 80 mm. Take height to thickness ratio for rectangular
