The purpose of this task is to focus on a particular area of interest and gain knowledge about
the relevant theory and practice.

Be as specific and as detailed as possible when describing your learning from the resource.

Source: Using performance indicators to assess institutional effectiveness in ELT- Vinicius Nobre

 Why did you choose to pursue this resource? What was your primary learning objective?
The first thing that drew my attention into this source was the title. For long we have been
familiar with how performance indicators can be used to assess teachers and the quality of
teaching they provide their students with. I guess it was quite interesting to see how this type of
assessment can be extended to the whole institution. My primary learning objective then was
to understand clearly how institutions should be aware of their effectiveness.

 Please provide a summary of the resource. Describe the main points and conclusions.
First, the speaker explains that using only students’ grades or results in international exams,
which is the most common approach to measure institutional effectiveness, can be misleading.
For this reason, he suggests that institutions should be using a combination of sources to really
achieve a more holistic evaluation of the institutional effectiveness. Performance indicators, for
example, should be built with the participation of teachers and some other stakeholders implied
in the learning process within the institutional context. Performance indicators for example
should provide the institution with information about how conferences or courses create better
learning and see if this indicators, thorough out the years, are the most effective. To be holistic
aspects like students attrition should also be used to monitor the institutional effectiveness.

 Which specific concepts were new to you in this resource?

To minimize the impact of a new performance assessment the manager could:
-Consult with teachers which aspects really matter as indicators.
-Create a general and inspiring vision.
-Performance indicators should be built cooperatively and communicated transparently.
-Performance indicators should be used not only at the personal level, but also to show
if institutional objectives are achieved or not as well as if the return of investment is
positive.

 How were the concepts similar to or different from your own prior knowledge?

I think that the main point of the speech in which the assessment of teachers work is not
enough is key. Considering that a more holistic evaluation of the effectiveness of the language
program is also a responsibility of heads of the institution seems a very new concept to me.

 What were the most valuable learning experiences of this resource?

The model presented in the speech about the use of performance indicators follows the next
sequence:
1. Define standards: what is expected from each indicator?
2. Monitor: are teachers, technology, materials achieving the standards?
3. Benchmarking: how are other institutions doing in regards of these standards?
4. Reform: based on indicators, what actions will the institution take?
5. Accountability: evaluate and reevaluate the reforms.
Good performance indicators should have the following characteristics: relevant, cost effective,
timely, reliable and valid.

 How will this professional development (PD) experience influence your teaching? Provide
two or more examples.
1. I guess the first way in which this source can inform my teaching is by helping me
keep in mind the fact that my very individual work contributes to the achievement of
a bigger instance which is the institutional.
2. A second example can be by helping myself understand the new standards expected
from the institution because the way these are communicated can rally make a
difference in how a teacher contributes with his everyday work.

 Based on this PD, please describe in detail at least three additional professional
development needs or learning goals that you have for the future.
1. How to design performance indicators for the language school.
2. How technology can be used to gain information about the institutional
performance.
3. What other aspects besides students grades and retention should be used to help
the institution be aware of its achievements.
