From the time when English has been accepted as the language of the rulers in the subcontinent, English
has been the most spoken language after the native language or the foreign language used by non-
native commuters. English being lingua franca has emerged itself as a tool that guarantees prosperity
and progress in the countries that are going through the process of development in the 21st century.
According to Kachru 1985, a large amount of students who learn different languages find difficult to
learn English as second or foreign language (EFL/ESL) in outer world. Students sometimes are confused
and stressed while speaking a second language it in front of many people such as their class. People has
named this feeling as anxiety caused by speaking a foreign language. The study investigates the different
stages and reasons of English as foreign or second language causing anxiety in the freshman students of
engineering belonging to public sector universities in Pakistan.
