This document guides you through a time-saving process for installing a storage system. For more information,

Safety Information

 Do not operate devices or handle cables on a stormy day.


 To avoid eye injuries, do not look into the optical outlets without eye protection.
 Do not wear an ESD wrist strap during the power-on process to avoid electric shock.

CAUTION
 To avoid personal injury or device damage, arrange for at least three persons to carry and install an enclosure.
 Before you handle devices, wear ESD clothes, a pair of ESD gloves, or an ESD wrist strap and remove
conductive objects such as ornaments and watches.

NOTICE
Do not remove or insert controllers, disks, expansion modules, or cables during the power-on process to prevent
data loss.

Wearing an ESD wrist strap

To wear the ESD wrist strap, do as follows:


(1) Stretch your hand through the ESD wrist strap.
(2) Fasten the buckle. Ensure that the wrist strap tightly touches the skin.
(3) The ESD wrist strap can be classified into the ESD wrist strap with a plug and the ESD wrist strap
with a metal clip.
 Insert the plug of the ESD wrist strap into the ESD socket of the cabinet.
 Clip the metal clip of the wrist strap to the square hole on the side of the cabinet.

1 Installation Preparations
1a Checking installation tools 1b Checking circuit breakers
The following installation tools are required:
 Phillips screwdriver (M3 to M6) NOTICE
 Flat-head screwdriver (M3 to M6) A storage system power failure may cause devices connected
 Diagonal pliers to the same circuit breaker to power off unexpectedly.
Therefore, ensure that the storage system power supplies
 Floating nut mounting bar have functioning circuit breakers with the following amps:
 AC power: 16 A
 DC power: 32 A

1c Checking components

Only materials involved in the installation process are listed here. The Packing List contains all materials required by the installation. The bag
containing the Packing List is attached to the outside of the carton.
Each controller of the OceanStor 5300 V3 is equipped with four GE electrical ports. Each controller enclosure of the OceanStor 5500 V3 is
equipped with four SmartIO ports that do not support IP Scale-out networking. In the following sections of this document, the installation
procedure is described using the OceanStor 5500 V3 as an example. The procedure for install the OceanStor 5300 V3 is similar.

2 Installing Devices
2a Planning device installation positions
Total required cabinet space = 2 U + 2 U x (Number of 2 U disk enclosures) + 4 U x (Number of 4 U disk enclosures)
For example, if the OceanStor 5500 V3 is equipped with three 2 U disk enclosures and three 4 U disk enclosure, the
space required by a cabinet can be calculated as follows:
20 U = 2 U + 2 U x 3 + 4 U x 3
Note: The height of the storage system is measured by the unit of U. 1 U equals 44.45 mm (1.75 inches).

2d Installing guide rails

The adjustable guide rails are 600 mm (23.62 in.) to 900 mm (35.43 in.) long.
The adjustable guide rails are preconfigured with positioning pins before delivery.
Two paired adjustable guide rails must be positioned exactly parallel to one another.

Installing bearing guide rails for a high-density disk enclosure

(1) Pull out the inner rail of the ball bearing guide rails. (2) Remove a rail support.

(3) Loosen the screws and adjust the length of the ball
bearing guide rail to be the same of the cabinet depth. (4) Install the ball bearing guide rails.

(5) Fasten screws. (6) Installing a ball bearing guide rail bracket.

Check the distance between the left and right guide rails, and
ensure that the two templates can snatch into the ball bearing
guide rails.
Check that the ball of the ball bearing guide rail has been
placed at the most front end of the middle rail.

Check that the edges of the middle rail and external rail are
at the same vertical plane.

2e Installing storage devices into the cabinet
NOTICE
 To avoid device damage, do not stack any components but install them onto guide rails.
 If you remove controllers and disks to facilitate the movement and installation of the device, record the mapping
between each component and its slot in advance. That helps insert each component back to its correct slot after
the movement and installation. If the controller is inserted into a different location, a system power-on failure may
occur.
Scenario 1 Installing a controller enclosure and a disk enclosure

Install a disk enclosure onto the guide rails using the same method as installing the controller enclosure.
After the controller enclosure is installed, pull out the information plate from the controller enclosure, as
instructed in step 4 in the preceding figure. On the left part of the information plate, you can record the
device's management IP address. On the right of the information plate, you can use your cellphone to
scan the QR code to obtain more information.

Scenario 2 Installing a high-density disk enclosure


(1) Install the inner rail. (2) Remove the two M3 screws from the upper panel.

a. Install the inner rail onto the system enclosure.


b. Use two M4 screws to secure the inner rail.

(3) Place the side step in the rear of the high-density disk enclosureon the front bracket of the ball bearing guide
rails, and slide the disk enclosure into the cabinet along the ball bearing guide rails (no manual alignment is
required because the inner rail automatically connects to the middle rail).

 Do not pull out the middle guide rails when sliding the high-density disk enclosure into the cabinet.
Otherwise, the guide rails may be warped.
 Before you install disk modules, install the high-density disk enclosure into the cabinet.

(4) Installing a cover.


a. Pull out the enclosure slowly.
b. Push the upper cover backward until the upper cover touches the mounting bars.
c. Fasten the two captive screws on the cover.

(5) Installing the system enclosure.


a. Slide the enclosure into the cabinet slowly.
b. Fasten the two captive screws on the pane.

2f Installing a cable tray

(1) Insert the cable tray into the ball bearing guide rails and the high-density disk enclosure.

(2) Use a Phillips screwdriver to fasten M6 screws to secure the cable tray.

(3) Install the spring pins to cable trays to secure the cable tray.

NOTICE
Install a disk module of controller enclosure using the same method as installing the disk enclosure.
To ensure well heat dissipation, insert disks in the sequence of disk slot IDs. If the disk module is not
fully configured, cover filler panels over vacant disk slots.

NOTICE
To ensure well heat dissipation, insert coffer disks to slots of A0 to A3. Then insert disks from left to right
and from E to A. If the disk module is not fully configured, cover filler panels over vacant disk slots.

3c Connecting enclosures

 All the EXP ports on the storage system can connect only to the PRI ports. An incorrect connection will cause
a service interruption.
 For a storage system with two or more disk enclosures, set up multiple loops based on the number of
expansion ports on the controller enclosure, and evenly allocate those disk enclosures to the loops.
 Connect disk enclosures in one loop over two separate links for optimal network reliability.

Scenario 2 Connecting high-density disk enclosures

 Connect two high-density disk enclosures using mini SAS HD electrical cables. The cables must be naturally
bent, and a minimum of 97 mm clearance must be reserved in front of each enclosure for winding cables.
 Common and high-density disk enclosures cannot be connected to one expansion loop.
 Each expansion loop of high-density disk enclosures must be connected to two adjacent ports (excluding ports
P1 and P2) of the 12 Gbit/s SAS interface module on a controller enclosure, for example, ports P0 and P1 or ports
P2 and P3.

3d Connecting the storage system to the network

The controller enclosure can be connected to application servers using GE/10GE electrical ports, 10 Gbit/s
TOE ports, 10 Gbit/s FCoE ports, 4 x 14 Gbit/s IB ports, SmartIO ports, 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel ports, or 16
Gbit/s Fibre Channel ports. In addition, a smart ACC module can be used to improve the storage system's
performance in processing certain services.
10GE electrical interface modules support GE/10GE auto-sensing.

3e Connecting to the maintenance terminal
 After connecting a serial port on the storage system to the maintenance terminal through a serial cable, you can then
manage and maintain the storage system from the maintenance terminal.
 During initial configuration, set an IP address for the management network port through the serial port.

NOTICE
AC devices can connect only to AC power supplies. To ensure a high availability of the storage system and
avoid unexpected power failures, connect the storage system to two routes of power supplies.

When you connect DC power cables, ensure that the black cable leading from the anode of the DC power
source connects to the RTN (+) terminal and that the blue cable leading from the cathode of the DC power
source connects to the NEG (-) terminal.

5 Powering On the Storage System


NOTICE
 To avoid electric shocks, do not wear an ESD wrist strap when the storage system is powering on.
 Do not adjust mini SAS HD electrical cable/optical cable connections between enclosures after power-on.
Otherwise the storage system may become abnormal.

The power-on of the storage system takes 15 to 30 minutes. Then the disk enclosures start power-on automatically.
 Follow the correct power-on sequence of the storage system: Turn on the external power supplies to each
device (disk enclosures first and then controller enclosures). → Press the power buttons on the controller
enclosures. → Switch on the switch. → Switch on the application servers.
 Follow the correct power-off sequence of the storage system: Stop host services. → Press and hold down the
power buttons on the controller enclosures until the system is completely powered off (five seconds). →
Disconnect the controller enclosures and the disk enclosures from their power supplies.

5a Switching on external power supplies

NOTICE
After powering on the controller enclosure and disk enclosures, check the Alarm/Location indicators of disks.
 If the Alarm/Location indicator of a disk is steady red, contact Huawei technical support.
 If all Alarm/Location indicators are off, all disks are running correctly.

6 Initializing the Storage System

 You can download PuTTY from chiark website.


 You are advised to use the latest version of PuTTY, otherwise you may fail to log in to the storage system.
After you have powered on the storage system, complete the following initialization steps:
1. Connect the serial port on the controller enclosure to the maintenance terminal.
2. Log in to the storage system by using any type of remote login software (This document uses the PuTTY software as an
example).
3. Run the change system management_ip command to change the IP address of the management network port.
4. Log in to the OceanStor DeviceManager on the maintenance terminal using the IP address of the management network
port.
5. On the DeviceManager, follow the Settings > Initial Configuration wizard to change the basic information, configure the
device time, disk domain, alarm notification, and import license files. If you do not perform the initial configuration as
prompted, follow-up configuration and use of services will be affected.

 For details about initializing the storage system, refer to the OceanStor 5300 V3&5500 V3&5600 V3&5800 V3&6800 V3

 The default user name and password of the storage system are admin and Admin@storage respectively.
 You must change the default password immediately after you have logged in to the storage system for the first time and
periodically change your password in the future. The command to change password is change user_password. This
reduces the password leakage risks. For details about how to modify the password On the DeviceManager, see the
OceanStor 5300 V3&5500 V3&5600 V3&5800 V3&6800 V3 Storage System V300R003 Administrator Guide.

7 (Optional) Installing Host Software


Install the following host software programs on the application server:
1. Initiator, an optional program for iSCSI host ports. For details about installing the Initiator program, refer to the OceanStor
5300 V3&5500 V3&5600 V3&5800 V3&6800 V3 Storage System V300R003 Installation Guide.
2. BCManager eReplication. For details about installing the BCManager eReplication, refer to the OceanStor BCManager
eReplication User Guide.
3. UltraPath, a multipathing program. For details about installing the UltraPath, refer to the OceanStor UltraPath for Windows
User Guide, OceanStor UltraPath for Linux User Guide, OceanStor UltraPath for Solaris User Guide, OceanStor UltraPath
for AIX User Guide, or OceanStor UltraPath for vSphere User Guide.

 Obtain the documentation for the ReplicationDirector and UltraPath from the delivery-attached CD-ROM.
 After installing the device, log in to http://support.huawei.com/enterprise/. In the search field, enter the
OceanStor 5300 V3&5500 V3&5600 V3&5800 V3&6800 V3 Storage System V300R003 Acceptance Test
Guide. Search, browse, and download the documents of the corresponding version.
