Welcome to ELD3! I am looking forward to the opportunity to work together to develop our
understanding of the English Language. This class is designed for Early Advanced English Language
Learners. We will collaboratively focus on increasing English skills in the areas of speaking,
listening, reading, and writing to an Advanced level. The thematic, integrated curriculum provides
students with a balanced approach to learning English through authentic literature, informational
texts, vocabulary development, and systematic skill and grammar instruction.

Course Goals
1. To build a strong foundation for the study of English Language Arts.

2. To build vocabulary by recognizing and producing the sounds of English.
3. To develop a deeper understanding of the mechanics of the English language.
4. To apply knowledge of word relationships, such as roots and affixes, to derive meaning from
literature and texts in content areas.
5. To develop sufficient knowledge of English grammar, syntax and writing conventions.
6. To develop grade-appropriate fluency.

Content Goals – Instructional time will focus on the following critical areas:
1) Students will apply knowledge of language to achieve comprehension of informational materials,
literary text, and text in content areas.
2) Students will demonstrate internalization of English grammar, usage and word choice.
3) Students will use knowledge of English morphemes, phonics, and syntax to decode and interpret
the meaning of unfamiliar words.
4) Students will read aloud with appropriate pacing, intonation, and expression increasingly complex
narrative and expository texts.
5) Students will identify the vocabulary, syntax, and grammar used in public and workplace
documents (e.g., speeches, debates, manuals, and contracts).
6) Students will write brief expository compositions and reports that (a) include a thesis and some
supporting details; (b) provide information from primary sources; and (c) include charts/graphs.
7) Students will prepare and deliver brief oral presentations/reports on historical investigations, a
problem and solution, or a cause and effect.

Attendance
It is very important to be in class each day as we build upon that which we learn. If you do miss a
class, it is your responsibility to make up the missed work. Speak to your classmates and/or me
regarding support. When you return to class after an absence, you must come to class with previously
assigned homework and activities completed.

All students are to be seated by the time the tardy bell rings working on daily warm up. Two tardies
will result in an “S” and three or more tardies will result in a “U” in work habits per grading period.
