Understanding Project Life Cycles
and Project Management Processes
0 A project life cycle is a collection of generally sequential and sometimes overlapping
project phases whose name and number are determined by the management and
control needs of the organization involved in the project, the nature of the project
itself, and its area of application.

0 Most projects are divided into phases, and all projects, large or small, have a similar
project life cycle structure.

0 The number of phases depends on the project complexity and the industry.

0 Project life cycles are similar for all projects regardless of their size or complexity.

0 There are three types of phase-to-phase relationships:

0 Sequential relationships.- One phase must finish before the next phase can begin.
0 Overlapping relationships.- One phase starts before the prior phase completes.
0 Iterative relationships.- Work for subsequent phases are planned as the work of the
previous phase is performed.
