Operation Principles Air Control Module
Series 446

The Air Control Module (ACM) is the main pressure control device used in all "Dense Phase"
and some "Dilute Phase" pressure conveying systems. Although the word "Air" is used to
describe the ACM, it can be used with other inert gases such as Nitrogen.

This ACM design consists of multiple pilot operation regulators. The number of regulators is
based on the total flow requirement of the system.

These models are available in three configurations – single setpoint (-1), dual setpoint (-2)
and multi-pressure setpoint (-M). The single setpoint design uses one manual regulator for the
pressure control. The dual setpoint design uses two manual regulators and an additional 3-way
normally closed solenoid valve for selecting the desired pilot pressure. The multi-pressure
setpoint design uses an analog pressure controller. The pressure controller is available with a
0-10 VDC or 4-20 mADC analog signal which corresponds to a 0-100 psig (0-6.9 barg) output
pressure.

Section 2.1
Air Control Module
Sequence of Operations Series 446

1. Regulator Operation (-1 & -2 ACM)

a. Air is regulated into the system through a 1/4" regulator and a main air solenoid
valve.
b. The 1/4" regulator pressure setting will be the same pressure setting for the pilot
regulator.
c. The pressure indicated on the regulator pressure gauge, located on the 1/4"
regulator, will be the pressure the system will convey with.

2. Main Air Control Operation (-1 & -2 ACM)

a. When the main air solenoid is energized, the regulated pressure from the 1/4"
regulator is allowed to pressurize the pilot port of the pilot regulator.
b. System supply air is then allowed to pass through the pilot regulator at a pressure
setting equal to the pilot port pressure supplied by the 1/4" regulator.
c. When the main air solenoid is de-energized, the 1/4" regulator pressure is cut off
and the pressure to the pilot port is exhausted to zero pressure through the exhaust
port of the main air solenoid valve.

3. REGULATOR OPERATION (-M ACM)

a. An electronic I/P controls the regulated pressure to the pilot regulator.
b. The I/P is an analog device, which is controlled by either a 0-10 VDC or 4-20 mA
signal. This range directly relates to 0 to 100 psig (0-6.9 barg).
c. The pressure indicated on the regulator pressure gauge, located on the I/P, will be
the pressure the system will convey with.
d. When a signal is sent to the I/P, the output pressure from the I/P is allowed to
pressurize the pilot port of the pilot regulator.
e. System supply air is then allowed to pass through the pilot regulator at a pressure
setting equal to the pilot port pressure supplied by the I/P.
f. When the signal is taken away from the I/P, pressure is cut off and the pressure to
the pilot port is exhausted to zero pressure through the exhaust port of the I/P.
