Jenny Salesa, Employment Minister Willy
Jackson along with a battery of Members of
Parliament from the Labour and the National
Party, which included Michael Wood, Priyanca
Radhakrishnan, Deborah Russell, Kanwaljit
Singh Bakshi and Dr Parmjeet Parmar, as well
as the leaders and the members of the Indian
community.
The flag hoisting was followed by the
singing of the national anthem and loud cheers
of Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Vande Mataram.
Emotions bursting at the seams

15 hoisted the tricolour celebrating
India’s 72nd Independence Day.
Seniors gathered at the centre in Onehunga
clad in traditional dresses and celebrated the
freedom day by singing the national anthem,
singing and dancing on patriotic Hindi songs.
“Seniors were very enthusiastic to come
together and celebrate this day. The joy was so
evident in their smiles at the event,” Manager
of Shanti Niwas, Nilima Venkat said.
The seniors also recollected the memories
of the celebrations they did back home in India
and shared the stories with the members at the
centre. The seniors were served with snacks
and tea on breezing cold morning after the
celebrations.

Fijians and Indians launched

nslaved in Paradise, a book about, as
its subtitle says, “A history of mammoth
betrayals of Fijians by the British,
Chiefs and Leaders of Fiji 1876-2006” by
author Rajendra Prasad, was launched on
Sunday, August, 12, in Auckland.

the presence of Honorary Consul of India in
Auckland BhavDhillon, National Party MP
Kanwaljit Bakshi, former Labour Party MP
Rajen Prasad and more than 250 people who
had gathered to witness the launch and buy
early copies of the book signed by the author.
In his welcome address Rajendra Prasad,
who had earlier authored Tears in Paradise
(2004) said, “One of the most notable things
that I came to learn from Tears in Paradise
was that racial antagonism or racial hatred in
Fiji was deliberately stoked by indigenous
Fijian politicians just before every election to
segregate their flock, using non-existent fear of
Indo-Fijians dispossessing indigenous Fijians
of their land, culture, customs and customary
rights.
But once in the seat of political power, the
same leaders who incited politics of racism
during the political campaigns became
advocates of multiracialism, multiculturalism,
promoting unity in diversity. This was the
vicious cycle of Fiji politics where deceit,
distortion and lies were traded with reckless
disregard or respect for truth or even basic
human decency.”
ChCh show proves India’s got talent

he first-ever Indian talent show held in
Christchurch on Saturday, August 4, at
Middleton Grange School, Riccarton,
was a success, according to the members of
community and the guests attending the event.
The show, organised by Indian Social and
Cultural Club (ISCC), was a showcase of
children and youth talents from all Indian
communities in Christchurch.
Preparations for the show had begun as early
as February when the ISCC committee came up
with the concept and plan to hold a talent show.
The show was categorised in various categories
which included under fives, solo singing, solo
dancing and group dancing. Winner from
each category was announced by three neutral
judges. Audience also had a choice to vote for
their favourite act by means of a voting card.

The author was Town Clerk of Ba before he
migrated to New Zealand after the first Fijian
coup of 1987 and pursued a career in business
in his adopted country. But his longing for Fiji
and his thirst to find out why his people living
in a country that is truly paradise went through
what they did, turned into an all-consuming
passion.
His decades long research resulted in his
first book Tears in Paradise in 2004, which
was an instant success having gone through
three reprints. He travelled to several countries
invited by the Fijian Indian diaspora and his
conversations opened his eyes to many new
facts and stories.
His passion ignited again, he went back on
his quest to dig up more facts that were hidden
deliberately or otherwise and 14 long years
after his first book, he has now published his
second, Enslaved in Paradise.

As the eminent educationist, Sunil Khilnani, put it in Idea of India, “India became a democracy
without really knowing how, why or what it meant to be one.”
Yet the democratic spirit allowed the survival and progress of the country when almost
everyone expected it to fall apart at some point due to its diverse mix of people and interests.
However, taking everyone’s interests into account and discussing and debating policies
probably also slowed down the growth process for India.
It is often argued that it might be better for economies to grow under authoritarian rule initially
and slowly turn into a democracy as people become more prosperous and aware of their rights.
India perhaps adopted democracy too soon.
But India has led the way in making economic advances while taking the interests of its entire
population into consideration.
And throughout its independent history when a leader has gone awry, the democratic machine
has voted him or her out of power, albeit with some lag in the mid-1970s. The Indian democracy
is the miracle in its last 71 years of independence.
Whether it is where we stand today or where we are headed in the future, the wheel of
democracy plays a guiding role. It might take longer to get there but that is probably the price
of its resilience.

working on with the Fiji Navy as

Namgyal unfurled the tricolour
and joined the people there when the
national anthem was played at the
venue. He then read a message by

T
he Australian government has
decided to recommence the Adoption
Programme with India, as per the
Hague Convention on Inter-Country Adoption,
said the Women and Child Development
(WCD) Ministry on Tuesday.
According to the Ministry, adoptions from
India had been put on hold by Australia eight
years ago, on reported charges of trafficking
of children for Inter-country adoption even by
some recognised Indian placement agencies.
"The regulation of Inter-country adoptions
have been made strict by the government of
India with the enactment of Juvenile Justice
Act, 2015 and notification of Adoption
Regulations, 2017," it said in a statement.
The WCD Ministry, along with the Central
Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), have
been constantly engaging with the Australian
government for recommencement of the
adoption programme.
The Ministry said the recommencement of
the adoption programmes will now enable a
large number of prospective adoptive parents,
including those of Indian origin settled in
Australia, in fulfilling their desire of adopting
a child from India.
According to Special Broadcasting Service
in Australia, Assistant Minister for Children
and Families David Gillespie confirmed that
he wrote to his state counterparts on Monday
morning, as a group of politicians launched a
new pro-adoption advocacy group.
"India has 'improved its processes' to comply
with the Hague Convention on adoption and
could rejoin the 13 countries still on Australia's
approved adoption list," he was quoted by SBS
News.

of 140 urban centres for years, with
Melbourne clinching the title for
the past seven editions. This year, a
downgraded threat of militant attacks
in western Europe as well as the
city’s low crime rate helped nudge
Vienna into first place.
Vienna regularly tops a larger
ranking of cities by quality of life
compiled by consulting firm Mercer.
It is the first time it has topped the
EIU survey, which began in its
current form in 2004.
At the other end of the table,

followed by the Bangladeshi capital

uring an interaction with a leading tabloid, Emraan Hashmi spoke at
length about the ongoing topic Nepotism. He also shared that he will
be setting his own company.
Nepotism is a topic which will always be discussed as it’s never going
to end. Many filmmakers and actors have shared their views on it and
yet we have seen several films where nepotism has been involved.
Last year, during an interaction with Hindustan Times, when
Emraan Hashmi was asked about it, he stated, “Yes, nepotism
exists in our industry, and I got a break because of it. If my uncle
(Mahesh Bhatt), who is a producer and director hadn’t been there,
I wouldn’t have been an actor.”
 Now, while talking to Mumbai Mirror, Emraan was quizzed
about his son Ayaan Hashmi’s future as the actor is going to set
his company. He said, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t.
When Ayaan grows up, if he wants to take over
the reins, the company is his. And since I’m an
actor, my son would be inclined to follow me into
the industry. But I don’t want him to limit his options.
Sure, I’d be able to guide and protect him here since I know the
territory well, but what if he has an acumen for business or wants
to become a doctor? The decision has to be his. We destroy our
children’s future by imposing our dreams and our fears on them.
But our children come from us, not for us and Ayaan
doesn’t owe me anything.”
