INTEGRATING LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY 2

Subtopic

The subtopic for this section of the project will be focusing on “Types of Solutions” for

systems of equations and the “Graphing” method of solving. Students will be using the prezi

software to create a presentation to explain how they solved the problem. Additionally, in order

to depict the graphing, students will be using the desmos graphing program. Throughout their

presentation students must explain what the graphic representation means, and how it relates to

their overall solution. As an extra credit assignment, students will be creating Fakebook profiles

for a mathematician. This is something that the class will use later on in the year as they focus on

the Hall of Mathematicians.

Objectives

Students will be able to determine the type of solution. Students will be able to use the

graphing method appropriately in order to discern the answer. Students will be able to use

content vocabulary in order to communicate their findings.

Instructions

For this assignment, students must pick one of the following three questions. Then they must

create linear equations for each circumstance. Next, they must graph the equations using desmos.

Students will then embed their graphs in a prezi presentation, explaining their answer. For extra

credit students can choose one of the listed mathematicians for a Fakebook profile.

1. Choose one of the following questions.

1. A GameSwap membership costs $20 and includes one game per month
for $5. Non-members can get one game a month for $7. When is the
membership is a better deal?
2. To rent scooters, Sam’s Scooters charges a $30 fee plus $8 per hour.
Rosie’s charges a $20 fee plus $10 per hour. Which shop is a better
deal for 4 hours? 6 hours? 8 hours?
3. You need to rent a video camera for your school project. Murphy’s
Camera charges a $30 rental fee plus $35 per day. Allied Rental
charges a $45 rental fee plus $30 per day. Which company should you
choose?.

2. Write linear equations for the chosen problem.

3. Using the software on Desmos.com graph the two equations.

4. Embed the graphs within a prezi presentation. Restate the problem and the answer.

5. Indicate whether or not there is One solution, No Solution, or Zero Solutions, and WHY.

6. EXTRA CREDIT: As an extra credit piece, choose one of the following mathematicians

and create a Fakebook profile. Include their: Name, Date of Birth/Death, Residency,

Mathematical Contribution, and a fun fact. Try and find a picture of the mathematician.
