The Buchanan held lands in the Loch Lomand and Sterling areas in the upper midlands, however, the main branch of the Murchisons, were for centuries allied with the MacKinzies (Clan Choinnich in Gaelic), who received their charter from King David Il in 1362. The MacKinzies controlled the area in the highlands west of Inverness, including Kintail and the castle at Eilean Donan. In 1479, Clan Donald began ‘marauding on the mainland and they met the MacKinzies on the banks of the Conan, where a bloody battle took place, The Donalds were defeated and the MacK inzies began a rise to power. Kinnith, the 12th Chief, was made Lord of Kintail in 1609 and, later, his son became Earl Seaforth. The were firm supporters of the Stewart Kings. .
