PROFILE
Rob and Brienne Stark are a middle age couple.
With mixed ethnicity of American and Finnish.
Brianne is a traveling photographer and Rob is
a local musician. They both enjoy being among
creative social events and music venues in their
local area. Their style preference is
Scandinavian Modern with a modest budget to
work with to achieve. Beyond the standard
three bed room, two bath living arrangement
they would like to include a separate home
office and music room as well as a built in
storage display case. They require three
bedrooms and an open concept kitchen and
living room. They would like a powder room or
a second bathroom on the second level.

Rob and Brianne desire a Scandinavian Modern style home.
This style represents the dramatic sleek use of function and
simplicity. Scandinavian modern style is based off of the sleek
elegance and beauty of the Nordic winters and uses clean
lines with a neutral pallet that is comphy and bright.
Maximizing use of natural light with keeping windows open
and incorporating light catching finishes and reflective
surfaces will be key to this objective. Open plans with simple
clutter free form will be expressed with minimal bold accents
to add the personality of the creative nature of the clients.
Accents of nature will also be added to create a calm retreat
like feeling for them to escape from the everyday hustle and
bustle of their busy social lifestyles.

The advantages of having sprinklers in residential applications would reduce levels of products
of combustion, help slow a fire from spreading and give more people time to evacuate as well
as giving fire fighters more time to respond to a fire. They are required in new residential
construction in my location, I have one in every room of my apartment. Although they did have
to push back and make it so the sprinkler systems would not have to be maintained so much as
before. When the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) launched this residential
sprinkler initiative in 2009 the costs were up to serval thousand dollars. There is a fear of the
cost of both inspection and maintenance or that the system will fail, or something will be
thrown at the system causing it to go off resulting in water damage in which these are not just
fears but also disadvantages. I feel like they should be required in renovations of new existing
buildings just because you never know if what could happen within the building in the future.
Plus, they are more likely to protect in case of a fire especially if living on the second and third
floor you will want to have time to get out or know if there is a fire somewhere in the building.

PART II: W3A2
Discuss how important codes are in residential design. Explain how knowing this information
will specifically advance you future application of code factors while designing. Provide at least
two examples.
Codes through the history of building have continually added and modify to meet the safety
requirements and need of people. Too many time there has been accidents and even casualties’
due to the sheer lack of knowing the risks. When an accident has occurred, a code was put in
place to take all possible steps to preventing it.
A great story with numerous examples of how important codes are in design that came to mind
for me was from a recent documentary that I saw about designing a cruise ship. Although this
was not a place of residence it had occupants that would reside for an extended period of time in
a dwelling situation as a cruise ship spoke of the MS Scandinavian Star which was set ablaze by
arson. Built in France 1971, and went up in flames in April 1990 killing 159 people. These
deaths were due to the fumes of many toxic materials. Among one of these was the interior
finish, melamine resin laminate that was used as a decorative covering and proved extremely
flammable in subsequent testing and caused toxic hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide
gasses. (iklimnet.com).
In section 4.3 of this document states the reason for the very large loss of life. The ship was up
to SOLAS requirements of 1960 and 1974 and since the sale of the ship to be converted into a
passenger cruise ship was neglected to be re inspected and considered as such. Some sprinkler
heads were blocked with rust, fire doors were defective and some missing. It is a series of
unfortunate events that have led to many codes up to date. It is the mission of the NFPA, ADA,
and many others to make sure that these kinds of tragedy’s will not occur within a place of a
residence creating the safest environment possible.

Objective: Select a topic from Part I and discuss three reasons why you feel the topic demands code
compliance in residential design. Explain what could happen if code compliance is not met for this topic.

STUDY MODEL

I think I choose a pretty solid furniture selection for this
room. The basic needs of every day living are met which I
feel is a choice that a designer has when considering a
client with a modest budget like Rob and Brienne. The
proportion of the furniture seems to be good for the size of
the room although when it is put in a 3D perspective it
Study model seems much smaller than on paper. Symmetry dominates
in this room although it is an asymmetrical room. There are
analysis not many ways to but the furniture in this room because of
the placement of the window and doors. I chose the places
that I did to make sure that I was maximizing the use of
space and flow or traffic from the entrance to the
bathroom. Being able to place walls sure makes for an easy
time arranging furniture, but I can see how much attention
has to go into selection if the space drawn out already.
