1 About This User Guide

1.1 Description of the Manual

This is the user manual for the Nuclear Concrete Quantities application. This application is
valid for civil engineering concrete design work.
Therefore, the user will be able to view the following results:
• Calculation of the volume of civil engineering concrete objects.
• Calculation of formwork surface areas for civil engineering concrete objects.
• Calculation of slab usable surface areas.
The user will be able to view results in a variety of ways and also save them to a text file.

2.1 Run the Nuclear Concrete Quantities Application

In PDMS 12.0, navigate to the element you want to include in the calculations and click
on the Nuclear Applications toolbar.

The main dialogue box for Nuclear Concrete Quantities will then be displayed.

The main dialogue box provides you with the following (from top down):

Type Name Functionalities

List Material The list provides all materials options established in the
project parameterisation list and is used to carry out
calculations based on the ’Material’ selected for any type of
object defined below.
Checkbox Floor Activates or de-activates calculations for floor type objects.
Checkbox Wall Activates or de-activates calculations for wall type objects.
Checkbox Column Activates or de-activates calculations for column type objects.
Checkbox Beam Activates or de-activates calculations for beam type objects.
Checkbox Base Activates or de-activates calculations for base type objects.
Checkbox Stairs Activates or de-activates calculations for stairs type objects.

2.2 Material Limitations

By running the Nuclear Concrete Quantities application, you automatically load the list of
materials used for the current project and it is displayed in the main interface list:

The limitation defined will apply to the concrete take off as a function of the MATREF
attribute content. To run this option, you need to select a material from the Material list.

Note: All is the default value that provides no limitations with regard to material when
concrete take off is calculated.

2.3 Limitations Applicable to Object Types

As a rule, you have a choice of six types of concrete civil engineering objects:

2:3 12.0

• Floors (Floor and Screed)

• Walls
• Columns
• Beams
• Bases (Floor and Screed)
• Stairs (Flight + Upper landing + Lower landing)

Each type is linked to a element that works as follows:

Note: When the Nuclear Concrete Quantities application is run, all types will be activated
as the default. You can activate / deactivate the relevant checkboxes as required.

2.4 Validation
When the preceding steps have been properly completed, you can validate your simulation
by just click . This will begin the calculation and will show the Progress Bar.

The calculation process can be interrupted at any time by click .

2.5 Execution Messages

While the calculation is being carried out, the application automatically manages the
procedure and displays all intermediate messages (if there are any) at the end in the
Execution messages and error display window:

Note: The messages displayed in the above window are also displayed on the Results
form and will also be saved at the end of the savework file.

2.6 Results List

After the calculation progress has completed the Results List will be populated with a
summary of the results.

2.7 Display Results

The detailed results of concrete quantities are given in the Result form at the end of the
calculation.

The Results form can be opened by activating . From here the user can view
the results for the various objects and save the results to an external file (see Results for a
description of the results for all types of objects):

3.1 Walls
In PDMS, a mass look-up is used to provide the surface area and volume of an object as
follows:

Volume = !!CE.Nvol

Surface area = !!CE.NSrf

Calculating take off for a concrete civil engineering object can be defined as follows:

Net surface = Surface area above and below area

+ contour surface area

+ contour surface area of openings

- Surface area above and below an opening (full penetration)

+ Surface area above and below an opening (limited penetration

beneath)

+ Surface area below an opening (limited penetration above)

Net volume = Volume - Opening volume
