Lesson Plan Day #6

Grade/Subject: Grade 1 Math Unit: Lesson 11 Lesson Duration:40 Minutes

General Learning Outcomes:


Develop number sense.

Specific Learning Outcomes:


Demonstrate an understanding of addition of numbers with answers to 20 and
their corresponding subtraction facts, concretely, pictorially and symbolically, by:
 using familiar mathematical language to describe additive and subtractive
actions
 creating and solving problems in context that involve addition and
subtraction
 modelling addition and subtraction, using a variety of concrete and visual
representations, and recording the process symbolically.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:
1.Students will be able to count in sequence starting/ending at a number.
2.Students will be able represent numbers using pictures.
3.Students will be able to represent number equations in the opposite way. (1+2=3, 2+1=3)

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

*Blank pieces of paper (2 for each child)

PROCEDURE

Introduction (4 min.):
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: ***COUNT BY 2, 5 AND 10 TO 100***

Advance Organizer/Agenda:
1. Have a math snowball fight
2. Worksheet

SAY: Has anyone ever had a snowball fight? Thumbs up if you have thumbs down if you
haven't.

Expectations for Learning and Behavior: SAY: Ok, we are going to play a game, it involves
throwing pieces of paper. So, I expect you to be nice and not throw it at faces because they
could get hurt.
DO: Pick one student to restate what I just said.
Transition to Body: SAY: OK, can you each take 2 pieces of paper from the stack that I will be
handing around.

Body (33 min.):

Learning Activity #1: SNOWBALL FIGHT


SAY: Now that you have 2 pieces of paper I need you to use a marker to write 1 number on
each. You can write 2 numbers between 1-6 on each paper. Once you are done this crumple
your paper into a “snowball”

***SHOW AN EXAMPLE***

You have 30 seconds to create your ‘snowballs’ and come back to the CAFE- GO!

(Once students are back on carpet)

SAY: So now that we have our snowballs made. We are going to have a snowball fight we
will have 1 minute to throw the snowballs around the cafe. The snowballs do not have to be
yours, just the ones that are around you. Once I say stop you are going to pick up 2 random
snowballs and sit where you are with them. We are going to then add up the 2 snowballs as a
class.

DO:
FIRST: Crumple up pieces of paper with 1 number on them
THEN: Throw them around the cafe until I say stop
LAST: Pick up 2 and sit where you are

Ok, now stand up and spread out around the classroom.


GO!

(1 min of play)

STOP! Sit where you are.

(15 minutes)
Assessments/Differentiation: Formative assessment of how students do with the adding

Learning Activity #2: SAY: OK great job everyone, can we please up away your white
boards. We are going to start this new booklet. As soon as you get it i need you to write your
name on the top.

And when you are done you need to come show me!

Assessments/Differentiation: Formatively assess students’ worksheets. Make students fix


anything if it is incorrect

*Work on 50th day of school booklet when done*

(18 minutes)

Closure (3 min.):

SAY: You are getting so fast on your math facts! Good job!

Feedback From Students: ASK: Did you like the snowball fight? Thumbs up if you have
thumbs down if you haven't.

Transition To Next Lesson: SAY: OK you can go get yourselves ready for recess. Don’t forget
to wear coats.
