Assignment 2 :

Question 1 A trunnion of diameter 12.65" has to be cooled from a room temperature of 90F
before it is shrink fit into a steel hub.

The equation that gives the diametric contraction, in inches of the trunnion in dry-ice/alcohol
(boiling temperature is 120F ) is given by:

 
120
D  12.65   1.378 1011T 2  6.246 109 T  6.345 107 dT
90
Use Trapezoidal rule to find the contraction.

Trunnion to be slid through the hub after contracting

Question 2 The Van der Waals equation below, models the behavior of many non-ideal gases
over wide pressure and temperature ranges.

𝑛2 𝑎
(𝑝 + ) (𝑉 − 𝑛𝑏) = 𝑛𝑅𝑇
𝑉2

Where 𝑝 is the pressure; 𝑉 the volume; 𝑇 the temperature; 𝑛 the number of mole of gas; 𝑅 is the
gas constant 𝑅 = 8.314 J K −1 mol−1 ; and 𝑎 and 𝑏 are constants which have characteristic values
for a given molecule.

a) Rearrange the Van der Waals equation to obtain the pressure as the subject of the
equation.

b) Compute
𝑑𝑃
𝑑𝑣

Question 3 : Figure 1,shows the shaded region bounded by 𝑦 = √x − 1 and

𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)2 .

Using the integration (Washer Method), find the volume of the

solid generated by revolving the region bounded by
𝑦 = √x − 1and𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)2 about the y-axis.
𝑦 = √x − 1

𝑦 = (x − 1)2

Question 4 : The total mass of a variable density rod is given by

𝐿

𝑚 = ∫ 𝜌(𝑥)𝐴𝑐 (𝑥)𝑑𝑥
0

where 𝑚 = mass, 𝜌(𝑥) = density, 𝐴𝑐 (𝑥) = cross-sectional area, 𝑥 = distance along

the rod and 𝐿 = the total length of the rod.

The following data has been measured for a 10-m length rod.

𝑥 (𝑚) 0 2 3 4 6 8 10
𝜌 (𝑔⁄𝑐𝑚3 ) 3.00 2.93 2.87 2.82 2.63 2.45 2.38
𝐴𝑐 (𝑐𝑚2 ) 110 115 123 134 146 153 165

Use Simpson’s 1/3 Rule in conjunction with Simpson’s 3/8 Rule to estimate the
mass (in grams) of the rod from 𝑥 = 2 to 𝑥 = 10 m.
