Volunteering
On a beautiful spring after-
noon, I was on The play-
ground with my children.
They ran across the play-
ground up the stairs across
the wooden aisle to the slide
when they suddenly stopped.
“Mom,” they told me, “there
is an empty bottle at the end
of the slide and we cannot
slide down.” When I went
there and picked it up, my
younger daughter asked me
curiously, “Why did you pick
it up? That is not ours.” I did
not blame her because she
was just 5 years old. She has
to learn more about how to
be a good person. The bigger
problem is nowadays, that
some grownups think the
same way. “Why should I
volunteer? It is not my busi-
ness.” But this is not true.
The messy environment, the
many poor or homeless peo-
ple, and a better future are
definitely our business.
Without volunteers, commu-
nities are not able to take
care of everything because
the money binds their hands.
Volunteers facilitate the com-
munities’ lives meanwhile
they make the world better
and experience their lives
positively. There are differ-
ent ways where you can give
back to our little community.
First, a meaningful volun-

The Clean Up requires a lot
of hard work but by the end
of the day you’ll think “It
worth the time!” According
to Mahatma Gandhi who was

“The best way to find your-
self is to lose yourself in the
service of others.”
Finally, another help is
volunteering in schools. To
provide better education for
their students, schools need
more volunteers. Although
many people work as staff
members, they cannot be
there everywhere and in
every minute. It is a big help
for them if enthusiastic par-
ents chaperone field trips or
assist in the library / comput-
er lab. Moreover, they cannot
coordinate special events
during the school year along
with their jobs. Volunteers
also can help to prepare for
these events in the schools
such as the Halloween Party
and Harvest Fest. Countless
opportunity to make our
kids’ childhood memorable.
In sum, volunteering is a
part of our behaviors. You
can’t save the world, but You
can make a difference. My
advice is to everyone: Open
your eyes & see the opportu-
nities to help others because
every little thing counts…
..So do yours.

pay less and demand more,

for the poorest Americans.
Many low-paid workers
qualify for various types of
welfare. So, while the cost
to an employer may be about
$8/hour, the real cost of this
labor is about $16/hour, with
taxpayers providing the
other $8/hour. With a tight
labor supply, employers, not
taxpayers, would have to pay

Ambulance Service building and is open
for food distribution on Fridays from 1-3
pm and on an emergency basis. The
Pantry gladly accepts non-perishable food

I am a trained Court
Appointed Special Advocate
(CASA) for abused and neg-
lected children in New
Hampshire. I am telling my
story in hopes that you, too,
will decide to become a
CASA volunteer.
A CASA is a volunteer of the
NH Family Court who advo-
cates on behalf of children
who have been determined
by the state to be neglected
and/or abused by their par-
ents. Sometimes the children
are still living with the par-
ents - sometimes these chil-
dren are in foster care. In
either case, the children are
being overseen by the state
Division of Children, Youth
& Families (DCYF). The
CASA visits with the child
at least monthly, attends
court hearings, and submits
reports to the court making
recommendations from an
informed opinion about
“what is in the best interest
of the child.”
Since I first learned about
CASA 15 years ago, I
always knew in my heart
that this was something I
wanted to do. When my chil-
dren left home for college,
the timing was right for me
to accept the challenge.
CASA volunteers receive 40
hours of training and ongo-
ing support. Over the last
two years I have had the
privilege of helping five
children during a traumatic
time in their young lives.
While circumstances can be
challenging, this work is
important. Every child
deserves to have an advocate
just for them. They need a
voice. I invite you to please
consider being that voice.

say about dobsonflies?
Largest? Most ferocious?
Most likely to change
names? Most likely to bite a
human? Or to be used as fish
bait? Or to be confused with
a centipede?
All of these superlatives
apply to larval hellgrammites
– insects that, upon emerging
from the water, promptly
change names to become
dobsonflies. These fascinat-
ing predators spend their lar-
val stage eating other inver-
tebrates, including other hell-
grammites. They’re
equipped with impressive
mandibles that can open
wider than the width of their
own heads and can handily
crunch through the tough
exoskeletons of most insects.
An occasional angler has
learned the hard way that the
mandibles of larger hell-
grammites are quite capable
of penetrating human skin.
Hellgrammites are important
links in the food web
between small invertebrates
and fish. Six clawed legs, in
addition to four hooks on
prolegs at the back end,
allow hellgrammites to for-
age over and under river
rocks without being washed
away. And they can be large.
Topping out at 3.5 inches,
hellgrammites are rivaled
only by the giant water bugs
for the title of largest aquatic
insect on the block.

diabetes.
Mr. Ruggles was born June
29, 1947 in Woodsville, NH,
to Herbert and Lillian
(Emery) Ruggles.
His favorite pastimes includ-
ed woodworking, hunting,
fishing, hiking, reading and
movies. One of his favorite
spots was Palmer Brook. He
also loved his cats. After he
attended school in Littleton,
Stephen went on to serve two
years in the US Army, sta-
tioned in Italy. Upon return
home, Stephen remained in
the area, eventually settling
in Littleton. He worked at
Hitchiner, Mfg. for many
years, and in his spare time
spent many hours in his
woodshop.
Mr. Ruggles is survived by
his wife of 33 years,
Florence Ruggles of
Littleton; son John Ruggles
of Dalton; stepchildren and
their spouses, Louise and
Steve Nichols of Littleton,
