El Gallo Maldonado

Esta leyenda se desarrolla en el Centro Histórico de la hermosa ciudad

mexicana de San Luis Potosí, donde puede verse deambular la figura
fantasmal de un hombre con una vestimenta estrafalaria; grandes zapatos sin
suela, pantalón roído, un saco roto, una camisa sucia y un sombrero de copa
agujereado, del que puede observarse un mechón de cabello que recuerda a la
cresta de los gallos. Eso le da el nombre de Gallo Maldonado, poeta que hace
decenas de años sufrió un desamor que lo llevó a estar cara a cara con la
muerte.
Luis Maldonado se enamora perdidamente de una hermosa muchacha llamada
Eugenia, la cual era de buena familia y parecía corresponderle; le encantaban
sus poemas y le permitía cortejarla sin problemas, surgiendo así un romance
que el protagonista pensó sería para siempre. Para su desilusión Eugenia
rompe el compromiso y le pide que no la busque más, y luego se entera que el
amor de su vida se había casado con otro hombre de mucho dinero, por lo que
se sume en una horrible depresión que lo lleva a refugiarse en la bebida,
descuidando su aspecto hasta perder la razón.
De la nada, en invierno, lo encuentran muerto en su catre. Sin embargo, el
Gallo Maldonado no se había ido del mundo para siempre…A la familia de Luis
lo sorprende alguien que toca en la noche la puerta diciendo que es el mismo
Luis, pensaban que era un chiste pero en realidad era el ánima que desde ese
momento deambula por las calles en pena recitando versos. Dicen que de vez
en cuando parejas que pasean por el Centro Histórico se encuentran a un
vagabundo que les dedica un poema

The Rooster Maldonado
This legend develops in the Historical Center of San Luis' beautiful Mexican city
Fortune, where a ghostly figure of a man can be seen with an eccentric gown;
big shoes without sole, gnawed at trousers, a torn sack, a dirty shirt and a
pierced top hat, of which can be observed a lock of hair that resembles the
comb of the roosters. It gives the name of Rooster Maldonado, poet who a
dozens of years ago suffered a dislike that led it to being face-to-face with the
death.
Luis Maldonado falls in love passionately with a beautiful girl called Eugenia,
who was of good family and seemed to correspond to him; she was charmed
with his poems and allowed him to court her without problems, arising this way
a romance that the protagonist thought would be forever.
For his disappointment Eugenia breaks the commitment and asks him not to
look for her any more, and then one informs that the love of his life had married
another man of a lot of money, provoking a horrible depression that leads him to
sheltering in the drink up to losing the reason.
Of nothing, in winter, he’s found dead in his cot. Nevertheless, the Rooster
Maldonado had not gone away of the world forever … Luis' family is surprised
by someone who knock the door in the night saying that he is the same Luis,
they were thinking that it was a joke but actually it was the soul that from this
moment will stroll for the streets in sorrow reciting verses. They say that
occasionally couples who walk along the Historical Center found a man that
dedicates them a poem.
