ECTF Controller
The ECTF power and power distribution board is a micro
processor controlled regulation module. The controller gives
maximum safety in case of alarms and fault conditions,
signalling critical conditions and registering every event in
order to help the service engineer to speed up the analysis
and thus the fixing of any problems. Safety is at the highest
level with alarms for High and Low temperature, power-
failure, door open as well as auto-test. The Controller can
be equipped with an additional Data Logger Module internal
to catalogue all the events and to provide a RS485 IN/OUT
port for bi-directional telemetry (with dedicated modules,
available as accessories).

The ECTF controller board contains the elementary relays and temperature probe
connections.

The ECTF is pre-programmed and compatible with all cooling and climatic equipment
from Lmb and . The necessary Parameters to define specific functions are editable via keypad

DMLP Monitor
The DMLP monitor (Data Monitor Logger Printer module)
function is to keep track on all events and alarms. Other
than the ECTF controller the DMLP is not a temperature
regulator but temperature recorder. The DMLP has got its
own sensor inputs. It got relay outputs for alarm directing.
The DMLP contains the memory to keep track on door
openings, timing alarms and temperature alarms. The flash
ROM on board can store data up to 45 days. The additional
SD Card can store data to a maximum period of 5 years by
a resolution of 1 min. All available and recorded data is
accessible via print out on the integrated printer. The data
on the SD Card can be checked via PC by use of the ready
installed SW on it.

The DMLP Monitor and the ECTF controller work both with NTC probes only. However the DMLP
can be equipped with an additional PT100 Extension Board. The PT100 Extension Board has
got 2x PT100 (4 wires each) input connectors and 2x 4mA-20mA output connectors. It is
connected to the DMLP via I2C bus connection cable. The use of PT100 probes is not a
standard for Climax devices. The PT100 Extension Board is a accessory for the DMLP to use
PT100 probes in addition.Alternatively option is to put PT100 probes inside the chamber by use
of the channel in the inner left side of the Climax and to connect it to any external equipment.

LMB_DOC_S-MANUAL_CLIMAX – Revision status 03 / 12.11 – version 3.1 / December 2011 Page 9

Alarm transmission
The alarms are generated by the DMLP. During alarm the
ECTF continues to work according to the set parameters.
When the DMLP is OFF (standby) no Alarms will be recorded
or sent. The alarm outputs are connected to the terminal on
the outer backside of the Climax. The Alarm Contacts are
relay outputs from the DMLP and from the Agitator*1 only.
In an event of an alarm the relay is switching and changes
its switching state to the opposite of its “normal” conditions.
The outputs from DMLP are not direct probe read out.

The Alarms are thresholds, settable in the menu of the

DMLP.

Door alarms and Power faults are NOT directed throughout

the Climax. Those alarms are just recorded and put out
visually on the display, by beeper and as a printout.

Printer
The printer is used to print reports and system info. It
replaces the usually used temperature recorder. The printer
can print automatically detailed temperature charts and
temperature tables. Values off limit will be marked. The
print outs are on thermo paper rolls.

The printer prints the alarms detected by the DMLP

automatically.

Product standard
Climax climatic chambers together with fitting Agitators
thrombocyte keep disposables in motion and at constant
22°C. Climax 150 and Climax 200 got a maximum number
of glass doors so that during door openings only a minimum
temperature exchange with the outside environment takes
place. The compressor of Climax series works extremely
efficient to keep energy consumption at a very low level.
Strong air recirculation and connected quick temperature
adaption also account for the low energy consumption. The
included temperature alarm system works independently
from the temperature controller (double temperature
control).

Product technology

The Climax is generally a refrigerator regulated to 22°C by activating the cooling cycle and
heater periodically. The compressor of the cooling equipment shuts off at the set point. A
regulation pause follows until the temperature drops below the set bandwidth in accordance to
the set point. The heating turns on and raises the temperature and turns off at the set
temperature. A regulation pause follows until the temperature rises above the set bandwidth in
accordance to the set temperature; than the cooling period starts again.

The Climax 200 is the only Climax device which keeps the compressor running at all times.
Instead of turning the device on and off a valve goes active to cycle the cooling gas back to
the compressor and not to the evaporator. The pressure drop in the evaporator causes faster
heating in the heating period. The heating period causes a compressor stop only on Climax
100, 150 and Climax 120.

Additional delays ensure that the compressor and the heater do not switch on and off in fast
sequence. The settable delays ensure better system performances and extend the lifetime of
the equipment. The bandwidth (shown on display) in reference to the set point is usually 1°C;
measured on S1 (Ambient Probe next to the fans). The switching delay is usually set to 0.1°C.

The agitator has got its own power plug inside the chamber and is not regulated by the Climax
device.

executed in conditions other than those specified above.
The internal equipment (shelf runners, supports, wire
shelves, drawers) are shipped inside the unit. The appliance
is secured to a wooden base by means of screws and
wrapped in polyethylene or packed in a carton, case or
crate. The appliance must be handled using a fork lift truck
with suitable forks (forks length at least equal to 2/3 length
of unit). In case the appliance must be laid down flat in
order to bring it into the usage place, it is suggestible to
wait at least 6 hours before switch the appliance on.

Unpacking
Remove covers and boxes gently. Do not use cutters or
crowbar. Make sure the boxes have been transported
upright. Check tilting indicator on the outside.

Safety precautions
 Check that the electrical plant is suitably sized for the
absorbed power of the unit
 If the electrical socket and the plug on the appliance
power cord are incompatible, change the plug with a
suitable component, ensuring the replacement part is of
the approved type
 Do not use reductions or multi-way adapters
 It is important to connect the appliance correctly to an
efficient earth system executed in compliance with the
relevant legislation, and ensure a safe protective
conductor connection.

Device setup

Factory defaults
The electronic boards have got ALL the same firmware. Every ECTF or DMLP board fits to every
climatic chamber or ECTF controlled and DMLP monitored refrigeration device. The default
settings are changeable by pre-set parameters. All devices are checked in the Lmb final quality
control. So basically all devices are ready to use. Refer to chapter Parameters to check default
settings.

Agitator installation
The Climax series fits to Lmb flatbed agitators. Install the agitator(s) inside. Use internal
power plug for electrical hook-up. Connect the data cable to the connector on the agitator.

Installation Qualification

Calibration principle
The Climax starts regulating the temperature as soon the
ECTF has been started. The regulation happens according to
S1 the AMBIENT PROBE. The probe is a NTC type and 0.1°C
accurate. Independent from that fact the device allows
electronically adjustment to bring the inner chamber
temperature to an average of 22°C.

The Climax is supposed to switch on the compressor when

the temperature measured on the S1 is rising above 22°C
and stopping when the temperature is dropping below
22°C. The heater on the other hand is going active when
the temperature on S1 is dropping below 22°C and stops
when the temperature on S1 is going over 22°C.

The principle of calibration is to measure the temperature

The DMLP has got its own probe S1. The calibration

Ballasted Probe
The Climax can be equipped with an additional ballasted probe type NTC directly connected to
the DMLP board on S2. The Climax has got a physical tube channel inside the left inner wall.
The probe can be installed through that channel without opening up the device.

PT100 probe installation

The NTC probes are not available with calibration certificate. Calibrate able probes of the type
PT100 need additional equipment if wished to be connected to the DMLP.

The simple probe installation for external measurement devises can be done through the cable
channel on the inner left side of the chamber or directly through the inner rear side which can
be opened easily.

The 3V lithium cell type CR 1220 is responsible for the system clock and DMLP will lose the
date and time setting and will ask for it when restarted. New adjustment of the date and time
will cause the DMLP to erase the interim memory and data from the last 45 days can be lost.
Furthermore all settings different from the factory default will be gone as well.

Cleaning
All surfaces of the appliance are resistant to standard
disinfection liquid and can be cleaned easily. The glass

maintenance

Trouble Shooting on Cooling Equipment

The main differences of the models are:

1. On the Climax 200 and 150 the compressor is always

ON

2. In the heating period a solenoid valve is activated,

though gas pressure in the evaporator is dropping and
stops cooling; same principle as switching compressor
on and off, but with much faster effect and while
keeping the compressor and condenser fan active at all
time. To speed up the heater is activated as well. So in
case the solenoid valve is not activated the heater will
be.

Refill junction

Cooling-Gas pressure
The compressor has go a junction to connect
a pressure meter to refill gas and to check
the pressure

This task can be performed only by a

certified refrigeration technician or specially
trained personal from Lmb.

The pressure of the cooling gas during the cooling period is the same as in all Climax models
about 3.2 – 3.5 bar. Main concern is the pressure during the cooling period only.

The pressure will rise to 6 – 9 bar max. When the solenoid valve goes active and directs the
gas back to the compressor. The noise of the valve during the heating period is an indication
for its good performance. No noise means that the solenoid valve is not working If pressure
measured on the compressor is below 0.2 bars, the gas is leaking.

Every unit is delivered together with on SD-Card reader.
The reader is a USB 2.0 device and can be put to all PCs.

Wizzard Key

another before and after board replacement.

For details, refer to the Wizzard Key programming

description.

PT 100 extension board

The PT 100 extension board is an accessory for the DMLP
board for connecting a PT100 probe to the system. The PT
100 probe is calibratable or comes together with a
calibration certificate and so it is very accurate in measuring
the inner chamber environment temperature

This option should be ordered in advance. Later installation

is rather difficult and should not be recommended.

Installing a PT100 probe for reading with external devices is

always possible and does not require technical changes.

Data logger module

The data logger module is an accessory for the ECTF. It is
to understand as a substitute for the DMLP. The DMLP
however can only record alarms and does not track data
acquired by the ECTF.

The data logger module placed on the ECTF is able to log all
other data in reference to real time not only to duration
time. ECTF without additional data logger module can only
display the last event based on working hours only

Web light server

The web light server is an accessory for getting ECTF access
over a TCP/IP Network. The web light server does not need
to be placed inside the climax and can also handle more
than only one unit by using device HW addresses.

The web light server allows limited remote access and data
transfer from ECTF to the PC for monitoring and alarm
control.

LMB_DOC_S-MANUAL_CLIMAX – Revision status 03 / 12.11 – version 3.1 / December 2011 Page 44

For details, refer to the web light server installation
description.

GSM module
The GSM module is an accessory for getting ECTF access
over a GSM telephone network. The GSM module need to
be placed inside the climax and can - if combined with the
web light server - handle more than only one unit by using
device HW addresses.

The GSM module allows limited remote access and data

transfer from ECTF to the PC for monitoring and alarm
control.

For details, refer to the GSM module installation description.

FAQs

The printer is not working! What could be the reason?

The printer is deactivated by default but still going active in

case of some alarm. A simple printer test can be to cut
main power. In that case the DMLP will stay on and report
the main power fault and will print this event as well. Most
likely a main power fault has caused the trouble because
the 12V battery has been discharged too much. Please refer
to the chapter “Troubleshooting” to get more details. Check
battery voltage (min. 10V) and check your printer settings.
If you have changed the defaults (“Continuous printing”)
but the settings have been changed back than check the 3V
battery on the DMLP - but !Please! save all data first.

What means “Stop on door?”

The inner ventilation (evaporator fan) stops as soon the

chamber door(s) open(s). Therefore the inner conditions do
not change too much. If door stays open for longer period
the fans will turn on again.

What means “Second Cooling”?

Second cooling could be the option of a second compressor

and peripherals as used in other scientific refrigerators.
There would be entire second cooling system as a backup
integrated. Standard is single cooling system.

The device doesn’t keep the stated temperature. According to the service manual it should be about 22С
+/-1C˚. How can we reach it?

LMB_DOC_S-MANUAL_CLIMAX – Revision status 03 / 12.11 – version 3.1 / December 2011 Page 45

The temperature offset is adjustable. But it is convenient to
make measurement in all compartments (storage levels) at
the same time. You may find some differences between the
storage levels. It is best to make measurement in the
middle section and to use only calibrated testing
equipment. Make sure latest calibration of your
thermometer was in between last half year.

The Climax 200 is regulating to average of 22°C in a rage of

+/- 2°C. So it is actually possible to measure lower
temperatures. Important is the average over time analyzed
by a “balanced” probe.

What is a “Balanced Probe”?

The probe for measuring the temperature is put into a liquid

filed container to simulate temperatures within liquids. So
beside the displayed regulation temperatures the
temperature measured inside the liquid is very much more
stable and the only good reference to the temperature
within the platelet bags.

We switched on the new Climax 200. After 6 hours, the display indicates the temperature 22°C. We used
a thermometer to test the cabinet temperature. But the cabinet temperature indicated by a
thermometer is 20°C. We want to know the reason and how to solve the problem.

The device is not calibrated or calibration offset in incorrect!

Please refer to the chapter “Installation” of this manual. In
such case the calibration offset need to be -2°C.

Set parameter CAL [P15] on ECTF to -2°C. It’ll cause to

correct the displayed temperature by the cause that the
heater will go on and raise the temperature immediately.

The device is overheating and not keeping 22°C. What shall I do?

Several problems can cause such behavior! A close check-

up as explained in the chapters “Hardware diagnostic” and
“Troubleshooting” is necessary. Pay attention also to the
condition of the condenser; which needs to be cleaned by
use of a vacuum cleaner and brush from time to time.

The temperature alarm is coming but temperature is normal. What can I check?

Besides the correct setting of the calibration offset of the

ECTF it is important to pay attention to the calibration offset
of the DMLP as well. The DMLP responsible for alarm is
having its own probe and need to be calibrated as well.
Refer to chapter “Calibration” and check the DMLP settings.

The device is constantly showing SD-Card invalid. What can I do?

The SD-Card cannot be repaired and need to be replaced!

LMB_DOC_S-MANUAL_CLIMAX – Revision status 03 / 12.11 – version 3.1 / December 2011 Page 46

The device is noisy. What could be the problem?

Search for the source of the noise. Use ECTF Test as

explained in chapter “Hardware diagnostic” and turn on the
relays separately. Relay U2 is turning on the cooling system
and the condenser fan. U3 is turning on the evaporator fan.
U1 (Climax 150 and 200 only) is switching the solenoid
valve.

Printer is not working. What can I check?

Press TEST button on the DMLP and check battery voltage.

Replace the battery if it is lower than 10V and recharge it
separately. Check Printer settings as explained in chapter
“Troubleshooting”

Climax ERROR: COMPRESSOR WORK. What does it mean?

ECTF board is faulty and must be replaced. Cooling is not

working properly. Cooling gas leakage might be a reason
too.

Right now the chamber gets to 21/22 degrees, but after a while the cold group does not act and the
temperature rises above 55 degrees. What can we do?

The compressor is a long lasting device. Most likely Relay

U2 on the ECTF board is not switching properly. In such
case you can program the unused relay U6 and change
connections just to see if problem is on the ECTF Board.
Also in such case the compressor should be hot on its
surface and that means the device cannot compress the gas
enough (incorrect gas pressure) or simply the condenser is
full of dust and need to be cleaned. Check chapter
“Hardware diagnostic” and “Troubleshooting” for more
details.

The display blinks "SWITCH" when we use the climax chamber 200. We checked the micro switches of
the doors and found the switches of the doors are in good condition. Please tell us how to solve the
problem.

The alarm for the door is DOOR OPEN. You can check the
function of the door switch by pressing and holding down
the TEST button on the DMP keypad. It starts to show the
battery power and asks you to open and close the door. You
have to test the door functions otherwise you will fail the
test. Turn unit also OFF and let it rest for a while. Turn Unit
back on but let temperature to reach set-point first before
starting the DMLP.

For how many hours the backup battery can ensure the proper temperature and agitation in climax in
case of power failure? Is the backup battery intended for temperature and agitation or only for
controllers?

LMB_DOC_S-MANUAL_CLIMAX – Revision status 03 / 12.11 – version 3.1 / December 2011 Page 47

The backup battery is NOT for backup of the controller
and/or cooling system. The battery is just for the power
backup of the DMLP (Printer and Temperature Alarm
System). The DMLP is not controlling the temperature. It is
a system which is reporting Events, Alarm and does
Temperature Recording. So in case of a power failure the
Climax will stop cooling and agitation but the device is able
to record the power failure and to alarm the users and to
send temperature alarms. The battery will last 12 hours at
least.

The temperature is displayed in 0.1°C accuracy, but regulation is 1 degree, is it correct?

Temperature regulation standard is 0.1 (1/10) accurate.

This depends also on the type of probe an on the calibration
result. The Climax can be equipped with a so called PT100
Extension Board for PT100 probes which can measure with
an accuracy of about 0.01 (1/100); but this is only for
temperature measurement on the DMLP not for regulation.
