About NE data backup management

Basic principles of NE data backup management

Overview
The Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM provides a complete set of functions to monitor the core
network NEs. You can use the 1360 COM to perform centralized NE data backup
management.
The following types of backup exist, depending on the NE type:
• Dynamic Backup – A backup performed through a Backup Agent provided by the
Network Element itself. Each NE has its proper Backup Agent describing the set of
operations needed to perform the backup.
• Static Backup – A backup performed through predefined operations provided by the
NE platform (for example the NEs based on the Tomix platform).
For safety reasons, you must have available, for each NE, a backup of configuration data
or other dynamic data (such as database contents). This backup is used in case a recovery
must be performed after a hardware failure or other crisis situation on the NE.
Restore operations are performed manually from the NE and not from the 1360 COM.
Note: When a NE is managed from the 1360 COM, no backup should be triggered
from the NE EML, as it could lead to a conflicting situation.

Data backup management

Data backup management consists of:
• Creating and scheduling backup jobs as described in “Creating a backup job”
(p. 3-20)
• Launching interactive backups as described in “Launching a backup” (p. 3-13)
• Displaying available backups and job information as described in “Displaying backup
job information” (p. 3-6) and “Displaying NE backup information” (p. 3-3)
• Removing specific backup items as described in “Removing a backup item” (p. 3-33)
• Checking the backup repository used space as described in “Displaying NE backup
information” (p. 3-3)
• Importing a backup item on a network element as described in “Importing a backup
item” (p. 3-36)
• Automatic cleanup

Backup item
A backup item is the data stored in the backup repository by the backup job.

Backup descriptor
Several kinds of application backups may be configured on NEs (only database backup,
all applicative data backup, etc.).
The backup descriptor describes the type of backup to be requested on a given NE. Each
NE may provide none, one, or several backup descriptors. All NEs of a given type/release
provide the same list of backup descriptors.
When a job brings in several NEs, a unique backup descriptor is associated with each NE
of the job. If an NE has several backup descriptors, it is possible to create a job for each
of these backup descriptors.
Depending on the NE type, backup descriptors are either obtained from 1360 COM
configuration data, or discovered on the NE itself when initiating communication between
1360 COM and NE.

Backup repository server

Backups performed through the 1360 COM are stored in a backup repository server. This
repository server can be:
• The 1360 COM: backups are stored in a dedicated file-system (/nedata/backup) to
avoid affecting other features when the repository becomes full.
The file-system size depends on your network characteristics:
– Type of supervised NEs (see “Managed NEs” (p. 1-5)) and number of NEs that
can be backed up
– Number of backups to keep per NE type
• A remote backup repository server: an external server that allows ftp transfer to a
given account/directory
The backup repository servers configuration is provided at 1360 COM installation and
can be modified using the Platform Management application. New backup repository
servers can also be created through this application (see “Backup servers management”
(p. 2-8).
One backup repository server configuration includes:
• Description
• IP address/hostname
• ftp credentials
• sftp credentials
• ssh credentials

• Relative path
• Disk space
A backup repository server reference is associated with the NE at NE creation in the 1360
COM. This reference can be changed at any time. See “Backup server selection” (p. 2-4).
Note: In the case of local server (1360 COM), user account and directory information
are implicitly configured.

Configuration
To allow NE data backup, some configuration may be necessary on 1360 COM and/or
NEs. For more information about this configuration, see Chapter 2, “NE data and
software upgrade management configuration on 1360 COM” .

Managed NEs
As the list depends on the 1360 COM release, the NEs that offer the data backup
(Dynamic Backup with OAM Agent on NE or Static Backup) managed from the 1360
COM are listed in the Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM External Release Notes document.
Note: The backup function availability could depend on both the configuration
parameters on 1360 COM side and on backup function availability on NE side. These
constraints are detailed in Chapter 2, “NE data and software upgrade management
configuration on 1360 COM”.
Note: * The NEs list with dynamic backup management above is not exhaustive, as
the 1360 COM owns an opened infrastructure that enables the Alcatel-Lucent service
team or external team to eventually implement backup management for other NEs.
The NEs platforms using this opened infrastucture are called NEs with dynamic
backup management. For these NEs, a specific configuration must be performed in
Platform Management (see Chapter 2, “NE data and software upgrade management
configuration on 1360 COM”). Moreover, some of these NEs can offer the import
backup feature (optional feature - see “Importing a backup item” (p. 3-36)).

About NE data audit management

Basic principles of NE data audit management

Overview
You can use the 1360 COM to perform centralized NE data audit management.
The audit of the configuration data of the Network Element is performed by an audit
agent provided by the Network Element itself. This agent describes the set of operations
needed to perform the audit.
The Audit of Configuration data feature allows you to:
• Provide a global view of the configuration data for Network Elements offering the
data audit agent
• Define one or more configuration audit results as the reference configurations
• Compare the configuration of one NE with the reference configuration of another NE
belonging to the same NE type

Configuration Data audit management

The Management of the audit of configuration data consists of:
• Creating and scheduling audit jobs as described in “Creating an audit job” (p. 5-9)
• Displaying job information and results
• Launching interactive audits as described in “Audit launching” (p. 4-7)
• Displaying available configuration audit results, removing specific audit results and
choosing reference audit results
• Comparing configuration audit results
• Automatic cleanup if the audit server is local.

Audit repository server

Data Audits performed through the 1360 COM are stored in an audit repository server.
This repository server can be:
• The 1360 COM: data audits are stored in a dedicated file-system (/nedata/audit) to
avoid affected other features if the repository becomes full. The file-system size is by
default one Gb.
• A remote audit repository server: an external server that allows sftp transfer and https
access to a given account/directory.
Only one audit repository server can be configured using the Platform Management
application. The audit repository server is the 1360 COM by default.

The audit repository server configuration includes:
• Description
• IP address/hostname
• sftp credentials
• Relative path
These characteristics can be changed at any time. Fore more information, see “Audit
server management” (p. 2-11).
In case of a local server (1360 COM), user account and directory information are
implicitly configured.

Managed NEs
As the list depends on the 1360 COM release, the NEs that offer the data audit managed
from the 1360 COM are listed in the Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM External Release Notes.
The audit feature is enabled in 1360 COM Release 1.1 and later.

About NE software management

Basic principles of NE software management

Overview
You can use the 1360 COM to perform centralized NE Software Upgrade (SU)
management.
The following types of Software Upgrade exist, depending on the NE type:
• Dynamic Software Upgrade – A software upgrade performed through a SU Agent
provided by the Network Element itself. Each NE has its proper SU Agent describing
the set of operations needed to perform the upgrade.
• Static Software Upgrade – A software upgrade performed through predefined
operations provided by the NE platform (for example the NEs based on the Tomix
platform).
The NE software upgrade feature allows you to:
• Provide a global view of the NE software versions used in a network using the
software inventory feature
• Manage all NE software versions locally on the 1360 COM
• Control NE software version change during a software upgrade
• Control NE system backup after a successful software validation (feature specific to
Tomix based NEs)

Software management
Software management consists of:
• Installing the new software version on the Software Server. Appendix C, “Installing a
NE software version on the 1360 COM” explains the installation in the case where the
Software Server is the 1360 COM.
• Creating and scheduling software jobs as described in “Creating a software job”
(p. 8-11)
• Downloading a software version as described in “Download a software version”
(p. 6-9)
• Displaying available NE software and job information as described in “Displaying NE
detailed software information” (p. 6-3) and “Displaying software job information”
(p. 8-3)
Attention: You must manage NE software only from the 1360 COM, because
centralized NE software management is not compatible with local NE software
management.

If this rule is not followed, you may experience inconsistency problems between the
1360 COM and the NE, such as 1360 COM allowing wrong SVC operations
(download, verify, install, start) or proposing wrong software releases.
In such a situation, to re-synchronize the 1360 COM with the NE, it is recommended
to stop and start the supervision of the NE.

Software version
The software version is the exact NE software release. The format of the software release
depends on the NE type.
♢ Example: r2.002.0006–01 for a ngHLR

Software version states

The software upgrade commands provided to the operator depend on the NE software
state.
Table 1-1, “Software version states and operator commands for Tomix based NE”
(p. 1-9) lists the possible software version states and the associated operator commands
available for a Tomix based NE.
Software Upgrade on other NEs may be implemented according to steps different from
Tomix based NEs. Thus, the software version state could be slightly different than the
ones described in Table 1-1, “Software version states and operator commands for Tomix
based NE” (p. 1-9) and Figure 1-1, “Software version state diagram for Tomix based NE”
(p. 1-11).

Software repository server

When a Software download is launched from the 1360 COM, versions are retrieved from
a software repository server. This repository server can be:
• The 1360 COM
Software is stored in a dedicated file-system (/nedata/software) to avoid affecting
other features when the repository becomes full. The file-system size depends on your
network characteristics:
– Type and number of supervised NEs (see “Managed NEs” (p. 1-12))
– Number of software versions to keep per NE type
• A remote software repository server
This server is an external server that allows sftp transfer to a given account/directory
The software repository servers configuration is provided at the 1360 COM installation
and can be modified using the Platform Management application. New software
repository servers can also be created through Platform Management application. See
“Software Server management” (p. 2-14).

• Description
• IP address/hostname
• ftp credentials
• sftp credentials
• ssh credentials
• relative path
• disk space
Through Platform Management application, it is possible to associate one software
repository server per NE type. See “Software Server management” (p. 2-14) Software
Server management/ Software Server selection.
Note: In the case of local repository (1360 COM), user account and directory
information are implicitly configured.
Note: In the case of remote software repository server, a base directory must be
created for each supervised NE type (see “Managed NEs” (p. 1-12)).

Managed NEs
As the list depends on the 1360 COM release, the NEs that offer the software
management (Dynamic SU with OAM Agent on NE, or Static SU, or Software Inventory)
managed from the 1360 COM are listed in the Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM External

About Network release audit

Basic principles of Network release audit

Overview
The upgrade of a network (such as IMS network) can take several weeks to complete.
During this interval, it is important to know which NEs in the network have been
upgraded and which NEs need to be upgraded.
A Network Release Audit provides a centralized display that provides the following
network information:
• List of NEs that need to be upgraded
• Recommended sequence for the NEs upgrades
• The running software version for the NEs, the upgrade target software version for the
NEs, and the software loads that are available on the software server.

Network release descriptors

Each network release that can be audited by the 1360 COM is described in a network
release descriptor file that is stored on the 1360 COM.
The name of the network release descriptor file contains the name and the release of the
customer network.
The network release descriptor file contains:
• The NE types belonging to the network
• The upgrade order of the NE types to support the network release
• The software target version for the NE types required for the upgrade to get to the
network release requirements.
At least one network release descriptor file must exist on the 1360 COM to run a network
release audit. The Network Release Descriptors files are included in the 1360 COM
delivery and are located in the 1360 COM directory /nedata/networkreleases.
Any addition of a new network release descriptor file in the directory /nedata/
networkreleases or any modification of an existing network release descriptor file outside
of the delivered file are the operator's responsibility.
In the case of an addition or modification of a network descriptor file, only NE types
already included in an existing network release descriptor should be added or modified.

Network release audit management
Network Release Audit management consists of:
• Creating and scheduling Network release audit jobs as described in “Launch a
network release audit” (p. 9-2))
• Displaying job information and results
• Displaying the network release audit report

Managed NEs
The NE types that offer the Network Release Audit from the 1360 COM are listed in the
Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM Software Release Notes (255–400–431).
To manage the NE types that are supported by the Network Release Audit, the NE types
must be mentioned in the network release descriptor file.

Job management
Overview
The operator tasks include job management:
• Create and manage jobs (see sections “Creating a backup job” (p. 3-20) , “Creating a
software job” (p. 8-11)) and “Creating an audit job” (p. 5-9)
• View information on the job state (see sections “Displaying backup job information”
(p. 3-6) , “Displaying software job information” (p. 8-3)) and “Displaying audit job
information” (p. 5-2)
The job management tasks depend on the job launching method and on the job state.

Job
A job is a set of backup, software, or audit actions on one or more NEs.
Attention: Only one job can be launched on the same NE at the same time.

Job launching method

Jobs can be created in:
• Immediate mode – In which you can:
– Create the job
– Name the job
Once created, the job is automatically launched.
• Scheduled mode – In which you can:
– Create the job
– Name the job
– Date the first job launch
– Enter the frequency of the job execution. This is an optional configuration, whose
set up depends on the NE and on the nature of the data (changing frequency of
data).
The job is launched at the scheduled date.
• Not Scheduled mode – In which you can:
– Create the job
– Name the job

Backup operator tasks

Delete job action
A Delete action does not delete backup items. It only deletes backup job history. This
action is used for:
• A cleanup of out-of-date instances of scheduled jobs
• Inconsistent jobs according to the network. For example, when an NE is removed
from the network, its associated jobs can be deleted manually since they are not
deleted automatically

Automatic cleanup
Backup cleaning policy for all NEs is configured in the 1360 COM. Once a backup is
successfully completed, if the number of backup items exceeds a configured limit, the
oldest one is automatically removed.

Manual cleanup
Manually remove a backup item only when this backup corresponds to:
• Deleted NE
• A backup launched in an unsafe situation
For more information, see “Removing a backup item” (p. 3-33).

NE data backup alarms

If a backup action fails, an alarm is automatically generated by the system, with 'friendly
name' including 1360 COM hostname and involved managed NE. See the Alcatel-Lucent
1360 COM Alarm Dictionaries for more information on alarm messages and associated
corrective actions for supervised and managed elements.
A backup alarm is cleared only when a successful backup action is completed on the same
NE.

Audit operator tasks

Delete job action
A Delete job action (in job panel) does not delete audit items, but only audit job history.
This action is used for:
• A cleanup of out-of-date instances of scheduled jobs
• Jobs inconsistent with the network. For example, when an NE is removed from the
network, its associated jobs can be deleted manually since they are not deleted
automatically

Automatic audit cleanup

Cleaning policy is configured in the 1360 COM (if the audit server is the 1360 COM).
For more information, see “Audit server management” (p. 2-11).

Manual audit cleanup

Manually remove an audit content or an audit comparison result. For more information,
see “Audit file results deletion” (p. 4-24).

NE data audit alarms

If an audit action fails, an alarm is automatically generated by the system, with 'friendly
name' including 1360 COM hostname and involved managed NE. See Alcatel-Lucent
1360 COM Alarm Dictionaries for more information on alarm messages and associated
corrective actions.
An audit alarm is cleared only when a successful audit action is completed on the same
NE.

Software operator tasks

Delete job action
A Delete action does not delete software versions. It only deletes the software job history.
This action is used for:
• A cleanup of out-of-date instances of scheduled jobs
• Jobs inconsistent with the network. For example, when an NE is removed from the
network, its associated jobs can be deleted manually since they are not deleted
automatically

NE software alarms
Each time a software related action is performed, an alarm can be generated by the
system, with 'friendly name' including 1360 COM hostname and involved managed NE.
The alarms can be:
for NE types concerned by static software upgrade (Tomix based NEs):
• Software download problems
• Software installation problems
• Software verifying problems
• Software starting problems
• Software validation problems
• Software rejection problems
for NE types concerned by dynamic software upgrade:
• Other software upgrade action problems. In this case, the content of the alarm is NE
dependent.
Each type of software alarm is cleared only when a successful software related action is
completed on the same NE.
For more information on alarm messages and associated corrective actions, see
Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM Alarm Dictionaries.

Network Release Audit operator tasks

Delete Job action
A Delete Job action (in job panel) deletes the information linked to a Network Release
Audit job including the audit report. This action is used for a cleanup of out-of-date
instances of scheduled jobs.

Network Release audit alarms

If the Network Release audit action fails (for example, if the network release descriptor is
not well formatted), an alarm is automatically generated and associated with the 1360
COM hostname. See the Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM Alarm Dictionaries for more
information on alarm messages and associated corrective actions.
A Network Release Audit alarm is cleared only when a successful Network Release Audit
action is completed (for example, when a network release audit is launched with a correct
descriptor).

NE level characteristics

Characteristics at NE level
Overview
The Network Management application allows an operator to create the instances of
Network Element to be supervised. Each NE has several attributes: hostname, type,
release, IP@, credentials, and so on. To support the data and software management
feature, these attributes must be properly set. For more information concerning Network
Management, see Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM Network Management Operator Guide,
255-400-457.

Credentials
Overview
The credentials attributes are used by the 1360 COM to communicate with the NE. These
credentials must correspond to accounts available on the NE at OS level. In addition,
these accounts must be able to perform the operations requested: backup, export backup,
import backup, export audit results, and software upgrade.

NE credentials
By default, a NE inherits the credentials defined at NE type/release level (see “NE type
credentials” (p. 2-6)). These credentials can be re-defined at NE level in the Set
Credentials window available in the Network Management application:
• At NE creation, by selecting Credentials in the Declare Network Element window
• At NE modification using the Modify Credentials popup menu
Except for TOMIX platform NEs (see managed NEs in “Managed NEs” (p. 1-5)) for
which 1360 COM-TOMIX session credentials are sufficient (if they do not manage NE
configuration data audits), for the other NEs, Telnet/SSH and FTP/SFTP credentials are
required for NE data management (backup or audit) and software management. Note that
the Network Release Audit feature does not required the Telnet/SSH and FTP/SFTP NE
credentials.
If these credentials are not available at NE level in the Set Credentials window, they must
be created at NE Type level in the Platform Management application. See “NE type
credentials” (p. 2-6).

Backup server selection

Overview
This characteristic is required only for Data Management — Backup. A backup server is
used to store the NE backups.
The 1360 COM enables you to manage several backup servers. A backup server can be:
• local: the 1360 COM itself, in which case the /nedata/backup files system will be
reserved for that purpose.
• external: an external machine, in which case the files system reserved for that
purpose must be defined by the 1360 COM operator/administrator.
To know how to create and/or configure a backup server, see “Backup servers
management” (p. 2-8).
Choice of the backup server (local or external) to be associated with the NE is performed
at NE level through the Network Management application
• At NE creation, in the Declare a Network Element window
or
• At NE modification, in the Modify a Network Element window.
The screen below shows the Declare a Network Element window.

NE type credentials
Overview
Credentials management in the Platform Management application enables:
• To assign new credential types at NE type level
• To set the default values of the credentials assigned to one NE type
The following figure shows the COM configuration tab that is available in the Platform
Management application.

Credentials needed for NE data and software management
Except for TOMIX platform NEs (see managed NEs in “Managed NEs” (p. 1-5)) for
which 1360 COM-TOMIX session credentials are sufficient, for the other NEs
(Telnet/SSH and FTP/SFTP), credentials are required to NE data and software
management.
If, for one NE, one of these credentials is missing, you must add it at NE type level
through the Platform Management application. To add new credential(s):
• Select the NE type in the COM configuration tab (see figure above), then select the
credential.<NE type> node, right-click and select Modify from the menu.
• The Modify Parameter window displays. Select FTP/SFTP and/or Telnet/SSH
credentials

• Click OK.
• Any new credentials will be automatically created for each existing and future NE.
• You can then modify the default values for these credentials. To do so, select the NE
type in the COM configuration tab (see Figure 2-3, “COM configuration”
(p. 2-6) above). Then select the default credential type (for example Telnet/SSH
default of credential.<NE type>). Right-click and select Modify.
• The window below is displayed. The login/password you modify will be the default
login/password used for all NEs of the current type.

Note: Change on these login and password values affect the NE type default values
and not the instances of NE based on this NE type.
Note: When a new credential is added at the NE type level, this credential will be
automatically added at NE level.

Backup servers management

Overview
This characteristic is required only for backup management feature.
Backup servers management in Platform Management application enables:
• Creating new backup servers
• Modifying attributes of a backup server
The creation of the backups servers and their characteristics modification is performed
through the Platform Management in the COM configuration tab as shown in the
following figure:

Figure 2-5 Backup server configuration

One backup server is always created by default with the parameters provided at the 1360
COM installation. To create a new backup server:
• right-click and select create from the drop down list.
• By default, a backup server is created with the parameters provided at the 1360 COM
installation.
Note that it is important to verify that the backup servers parameters are correct, as an
incorrect or incomplete configuration would lead to unsuccessful backup operations.
Below are described backup server attributes:
• Description: this is the identifier (also called reference) of the Backup server in the
1360 COM. This identifier is automatically created by the 1360 COM at server
creation but can be modified by the operator
• Disk space: disk space of the server (see next paragraph: "Dimensioning")
• IP address/Hostname: backup server Address
• Relative path: Path on the server where backups of all managed NE are stored. The
value of the relative path parameter depends on the accounts configuration on the
server. In case the server is the 1360 COM itself, the accounts defined for FTP and
SFTP have access only to the nedata partition. Thus, setting /backup as value for this
parameter will configure the /nedata/backup directory as the one to be used for the
transfer. In case the server has no access restriction for the account used for the file
transfer, the parameter value should be the entire path from the root. To enable a
correct behavior, the directory set for this parameter must exist on the server.
Note: Any change of the disk space in this screen must also be performed at the OS
level: extension of the file system.

Dimensioning
The dimensioning of a backup server file system must be carefully considered in order to
correctly handle backup files of all network elements.
1360 COM keeps track of the three last backup files for each NE in each backup server:
before performing a NE backup, the 1360 COM checks how many backup files regarding
this NE exist on the backup server associated with this NE. If the number of files is three,
then the 1360 COM will remove the oldest one.
When the backup server is the 1360 COM, the initial size of the backup server is
requested at 1360 COM installation, the filesystem /nedata/backup is created, and the
Backup Server configuration is initialized accordingly.
In the case of extension of the FS at UNIX level, the backup server configuration (Disk
Space) must be updated to reflect the new situation. This parameter is used by the 1360
COM to display the disk percentage of occupancy in the backup server information
window.

Public key authentication

For security purposes, the export and import operations must be based on sftp/scp
protocol between an NE and a backup server using the public key authentication
The public key authentication allows a secure communication between two machines
without having to provide a password for the user authentication, but requires a
preliminary configuration between the two machines.
Between the NE and the backup server:
The NE must support a key pair that will be used for the user authentication and the data
encryption.
The NE public key must be published in the Backupserver authorized key file.

reference files, and comparison files) of all managed NEs. The value of the relative
path parameter depends on the accounts configuration on the server. In case the server
is the 1360 COM itself, the accounts defined for SFTP have access to only the nedata
partition. Thus, setting /audit for this parameter will configure the /nedata/audit
directory as the one to be used for the transfer. In case the server has no access
restriction for the account used for the file transfer, the parameter value should be the
entire path from the root. To enable a correct behavior, the directory set for this
parameter must be existing on the server.
• SFTP Login: Credentials (login and password) used by 1360 COM to access the audit
server in order to process the SFTP and HTTPS requests for audit files management
and display.
If the audit server is not the 1360 COM or if the audit server is the 1360 COM but with a
relative path different than /audit, the operator must ensure that there is an https
server (such as Apache) installed on the audit server and that https URLs built with
the audit server address and the relative path are accessible (using the NE sftp account).
The 1360 COM GUI enables you to display the contents of the audit files via https (URLs
such as: https://<auditServerIPAddress>/<relative path>/result/<filename>).

Software Server management

Software Server selection
A Software Server is used to store the NEs software releases for software upgrade
management. During installation of the 1360 COM, information is obtained to populate
the parameters of “Software Server 1” as it appears in the “COM configuration tab” of the
Platform Management application. See Figure 2-8, “Software Server configuration”
(p. 2-15).
The 1360 COM enables you to manage several Software Servers that can be one of the
following types:
• local – The 1360 COM, in which case the /nedata/software files system will be
reserved for that purpose.
• external – An external machine, in which case the files system reserved for that
purpose must be defined by the 1360 COM operator/administrator.
For information on creating and/or configuring a software server, see “Software Server
configuration” (p. 2-15).
Software Server association with a NE type
The Software Server associated with one NE must be the same for all NEs of the same
type.
To choose the Software Server associated with one NE type:
1. In the COM configuration tab of the Platform Management application, select an NE
type and click the plus sign before it to expand the options.
2. Click the plus sign in front of Software Configuration to expand the options.
3. Click Software Server Id to highlight it, right-click and select Modify.
4. Enter the number of the software server that will contain the software releases for this
NE type.
To create additional Software Servers, see “Software Server configuration” (p. 2-15).
5. Click Software Repository Directory to highlight it, right-click and select Modify.
Enter the name of the directory on the software server where the software versions
will be archived prior to being downloaded on the NE.
This directory is a sub-directory of the 'relative path' configured for the software
server (see “Software Server configuration” (p. 2-15)). This directory is generally
dedicated to the NE type and its name is most often the NE type name. Each
sub-directory of this directory could correspond to one distinct software version.
Note: If this field is empty or if the directory does not exist on the software server, the
operator will not be able to perform either a software version download or an OAM
agent installation from a NE version.

Software Server configuration
Software Servers are created and modified from the COM configuration tab in the
Platform Management application, as shown in the figure below. “Software Server 1” is
created by default. Additional Software Servers are created as needed.

Figure 2-8 Software Server configuration

By default, a Software Server is created with ftp/sftp and telnet/ssh credentials

pre-initialized to specific 1360 COM accounts.
Important! When you create a new Software Server, it is important to verify that the
Software Servers parameters are correct, as an incorrect or incomplete configuration
would lead to an empty list of software releases for download or agent install
operations.
To create a new software server:
1. Select an existing Software Server identifier to highlight it, right-click and select
Create.

2. Click the plus sign in front of the new Software Server identifier to expand the
options.
Each new Software Server will be assigned the next number in sequence.
3. Click the plus sign in front of Configuration.
4. To configure the following Software Server attributes, highlight the attribute,
right-click and select Modify.
• Description – The identifier of the Software Server in the 1360 COM. This name
will be displayed in the Network Management GUI.
• Disk Space – The disk space of the server. For more information, see
“Dimensioning” (p. 2-16).
• IP Address/Hostname – The Software Server IP address
• Relative Path – The path on the server where all the software releases of all
managed NE are stored. The value of the relative path parameter depends on the
accounts configuration on the server. When the server is the 1360 COM itself, the
accounts defined for FTP and SFTP have access only to the nedata partition. Thus,
setting /software as value for this parameter will configure the /nedata/software
directory as the one to be used for the transfer. When the server has no access
restriction for the account used for the file transfer, the parameter value should be
the entire path from the root. To enable the correct behavior, the directory set for
this parameter must exist on the server.

How to view Software Server release versions from the Network Manager
The currently available versions of software releases for each NE type can be viewed
from the Network Manager. For more information, see “Displaying Software Server NE
software information” (p. 7-13).

Dimensioning
The dimensioning of a Software Server file system must be carefully considered in order
to correctly handle all software release stored.
When the Software Server is the 1360 COM, the initial size of the Software Server is
requested at 1360 COM installation, the filesystem /nedata/software is created and the
Software Server configuration is initialized accordingly.

Public key authentication

This mechanism is that same as public key authentication for a backup server. See
“Backup servers management” (p. 2-8) for more information.

OAM backup agents location

Backup agents
This characteristic is taken into account only for backup management feature and for NEs
with dynamic backup management (see “Managed NEs” (p. 1-5)).
The OAM Backup agent is composed of several files whose purpose is to support the
execution of the backup operations for a NE supporting the dynamic backup
management.
Each NE supporting dynamic backup management must be associated with an OAM
Backup agent present on the 1360 COM and/or on the NE. This association is performed
at the NE type/release level and depends of the NE type/release implementation choice.
Two site parameters at the NE type/release level define the path of the backup agent:
• OAM Backup agent directory path on the 1360 COM
and
• OAM Backup agent directory path on the NE
When these parameters are empty, if the type is not a TOMIX platform type or a static
backup management type the backup feature is not supported for the respective NE type.
For more information, see “Managed NEs” (p. 1-5)).
The following table provides an explanation of the different combinations according to

OAM audit agents location

Overview
The OAM audit agents location is taken into account only for audit management. The
OAM Audit agent is composed of several files whose purpose is to support the execution
of the audit operations for a NE supporting the audit management.
Each NE supporting the audit management must be associated to an OAM audit agent
present on the 1360 COM and/or on the NE. This association is done at NE type/release
level and depends of the NE type/release implementation choice. In addition, the
Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM provides the option to install an OAM Audit Agent from the
Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM to the NE.
Two site parameters at the NE type/release level define these software agent paths:
• OAM audit agent path on the 1360 COM: enables the storage of the agent to be
installed on the NE
and
• OAM audit agent path on the NE: location of the agent used for the audit
When these two parameters are empty, the audit feature is not supported for the respective
NE types.
The following table provides an explanation of the different combinations according to
the content (empty/filled) of these parameters:

Usually, these parameters are correctly initialized at installation or upgrade of the 1360
COM and, consequently, they do not need to be modified.
Nevertheless, the administrator might need to update these values (for example, for the
introduction of audit feature for a new NE).

Access to Status and Result file

Overview
For Non Tomix based NEs support action Result files, a Result file can be accessible from
the completed and failed folders when the job is completed (successfully or not), in the
popup menu attached to a specific action.
A Result file contains the capture of the STDOUT and STDERR of the script that has
been executed to perform a specific action.

Launching a backup
Overview
You can launch a backup on selected NE(s) using this short procedure.

Launch a backup
Prerequisite(s)
Ensure that:
• The Network Management window is open.
• The Job Management module is loaded using Load modules in the View menu in the
Network Management window.
• The NE is supervised by the 1360 COM, in a "reachable" communication state.
If one of the NEs is not in a "reachable" state when the backup job is executed, the
action will fail for this specific NE. In this case, a 1360 COM alarm is generated.
• If an NE backup job is already running, the action will fail for this specific NE. In this
case, a 1360 COM alarm is generated.
• The NE supports data backup management launched by 1360 COM (see “Managed
NEs” (p. 1-5)).
• The NE and the 1360 COM have exchanged their respective RSA public keys. This is
optional, depending on the NE's requirements for file exchange security. Key
exchange is not mandatory.
• The backup server configuration (configuration and credentials) has been checked in
the Platform Management application's COM configuration tab.

Procedure
Use this procedure to launch a backup.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

1 In the tree view area, select the NE(s) for which you want to launch a backup.
Selected NE(s) are highlighted in the left tree.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

2 Note: When you are reaching an element through a hierarchical split, rather than
displaying an NE to right-click, the GUI may display NEname.Mgr. You can
substitute NEname.Mgr for the NE to right-click in this procedure.
Right-click the NE(s) or the NEname.Mgr and select Data Management - Launch
backup.
Note that this popup menu is available (displayed) if all the selected NEs support data
backup management AND if a backup descriptors list is available for each NE.
Attention: When a NE has just started to be supervised (NE popup menu: Start
supervision), it can takes several minutes until the popup menus Software management
and 1360 COM agent are displayed. This delay corresponds to the duration needed for the
1360 COM to obtain the backup and software descriptors located on the NE.

3 For each NE, select the backup descriptor using the Backup Descriptor drop down list.
• If all the NEs you want to backup belong to the same NE type and you want to backup
these NEs on the same backup descriptor, select the backup descriptor in the Enter
value for setting selected (or all) drop down list of the Backup Descriptor. The
selected backup descriptor is automatically associated with all the NEs.
• If you want to select a specific backup descriptor for each NE, select the backup
descriptor in the Backup Descriptor drop down list of each selected NE.

4 If some parameters are needed, the OK button is not available. It depends on the
parameters with defined default values or not.
In this case, to enter the needed parameters click the [...] button.
A Set additional parameter for backup window displays to enter the parameter value.
In the case of crypted parameter, you must confirm the provided value in a Enter crypted
parameter value popup window.

5 Click OK.
If some of the NE(s) impacted in this new job are already involved in another job, a
confirmation message opens. Click Yes to continue.

Installing Backup Agent

Overview
This feature concerns only NEs that implement the "Dynamic Backup Management". See
concerned NE list in “Managed NEs” (p. 1-5).
The Backup Agent is a set of files that are needed to configure the Dynamic Backup
Management for one NE type.
The Backup Agent used for the backup feature is located either on the 1360 COM or on
the NE. The Backup Agent location depends on the NE type configuration (for more
details on NE type configuration for 'Dynamic Backup Management' see “OAM backup
agents location” (p. 2-17) ).
Installing Backup Agent feature must be used only in case of Backup agent used on
the NE. The Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM enables you to install/upgrade a Backup agent
from one Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM repository to the NE.

• The NE is supervised by the 1360 COM in a "reachable" communication state.
• Both NE type Site parameters OAM Backup agent path on NE (path where the agent
must be located on the NE) and OAM Backup agent path on 1360 COM (path where
is located the agent to download) are not empty. For more information about Site
parameters, see “OAM backup agents location” (p. 2-17) and the Alcatel-Lucent 1360
COM Platform Management Operator guide, 255-400-454.

Procedure
To install/upgrade a Backup Agent:

Audit results comparison

Comparing an audit result with a reference audit result

Overview
You can compare audit result files in order to compare two configurations retrieved by the
1360 COM:
• In two different periods for the same NE.
or
• For two distinct NEs that belong to the same NE type.
An audit result file is obligatory compared with an audit result file that has been set as a
reference. The comparison result file contains only the differences between the files
compared.
This feature enables you to store the comparison results files on the audit server.
Each comparison result file can be displayed or manually removed through the 1360
COM interface in the same way as for any result file (see section “NE audit display”
(p. 4-10)and section “Audit file results deletion” (p. 4-24)).

Additional Information
In all cases, when the comparison is successful (files are identical or not), a new file is
created and stored in the Audit delta files NE sub-tree.
If both files are identical, the comparison result file is empty and the color of the
comparison file name is black in the Audit Information tab.
If files differ, the delta result file contains only the differences and the color of the
comparison file name is blue in the Audit Information tab.
See an example of displayed results names in the Audit Information tab figure.

Figure 4-9 Delta files names displayed in Audit information tab

An example of a comparison result file is given in the following figure.

The content is presented as the result of the UNIX “diff” command, which contains only
the file differences.

Displaying NE detailed software information

Overview
You can display the list of software versions available for each NE. Not all supervised or
managed elements will display NE software information without accessing the element
through its CLI.
In cases where elements are being upgraded, detailed software information may not be
available for an element. To update 1360 COM's database with the latest NE release
information, run a Network Release Audit. To learn about and then run a network release
audit job, see “Basic principles of Network release audit” (p. 1-13)

How to download a software version

Prerequisite(s)
Ensure that:
• The Network Management window is open.
• The module Job Management is loaded (by using Load modules in the View menu in
Network Management window).
• The NE supports static software management from 1360 COM (see “Managed NEs”
(p. 1-5)).
• The NE is supervised by the 1360 COM, and is in a reachable communication
state.
• The software state of the NE must be idle or activable. This information appears
in the Network Information tab or in the Detailed Software Information window
(see “Displaying NE detailed software information” (p. 6-3)).
• The new software version is already installed on the Software Server. The Software
Server can be configured at NE type level through Platform Management. See
“Software Server management” (p. 2-14) and Appendix C, “Installing a NE software
version on the 1360 COM”

Procedure
Note: When you are reaching an element through a hierarchical split, rather than
displaying an NE to right-click, the GUI may display NEname.Mgr. You can
substitute NEname.Mgr for the NE to right-click in this procedure.
To download software:
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

1 In the tree view area, select one or more NEs or the NEname.Mgr that you want to
download a software version to.
The selected NEs are highlighted.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

2 Download a software version.

• Right-click the NE(s) or the NEname.MGR and select Software Management -
Download from the drop down list
Attention: When an NE has just started to be supervised (NE popup menu: Start
supervision), it can takes several minutes until the popup menus software
management and 1360 COM agent are displayed. This delay corresponds to the
duration needed for the 1360 COM to obtain the backup and software descriptors
located on the NE.
• A Download window displays.

3 Attention: Before performing the operation, read this information carefully because
you may need to modify, for example, some configuration files.
Select the software version to download using one of the following methods:
• To select one single software version for all the selected NEs of the same type, select
one version in the Enter value for setting selected (or all) drop down list of the
additional line New software version at the top of the window.
Note: If the selected NEs are of different types, you cannot select a common software
version.
• To select one specific software version for each selected NE, select one version in the
New software version drop down list of each selected NE.
• To select a software version for an element on an LCP chassis, the software download
operation must be performed on the side-B MI, or the download operation will fail.
See Figure 6-6, “LCP Side B MI software download” (p. 6-15).
For additional information on using the side-B MI, reference the Linux Control
Platform documentation's Virtual Machine Management and Host Infrastructure
Guide's section on VMM-HI host software update.
Note: An information window appears showing the readme .txt file of the selected
software version.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

4 Click OK.
In the Job information tab, the software downloading appears as a Running job.

management procedures

Overview
Purpose
This chapter describes the software management procedures from the network
management GUI in the case of dynamic software upgrade.
In the case of Dynamic software upgrade management, several software actions offered
by the GUI are NE/type/release dependant. Names and definition of these actions are
dynamically discovered by 1360 COM. This chapter describes how to launch and display
the results of such actions.
Dynamic software upgrade management:
• Installing Software Agent
• Displaying NE software information
• Downloading a software version
• Executing a software upgrade action
• Executing a parallel action (such as halt action)
• Retrieving NE software information
You perform the above procedures from the Network Management window.
Note: Before managing software, you need to be familiar with software management
basics (see Chapter 1, “Overview of NE software and data management”).

Installing software agent

Overview
This feature concerns only NEs that implement the "Dynamic software upgrade
management". See NEs concerned in “Managed NEs” (p. 1-5).
The Software Agent is a set of files that are necessary to configure the Dynamic Software
Upgrade for one NE type.
The Software Agent is located on the NE but it can be installed or upgraded on the NE by
the Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM. “Installing/upgrading a Software Agent from 1360 COM
repository” (p. 7-4) explains how installing/upgrading a Software Agent from 1360 COM
repository.
The operator has also the possibility to upgrade a NE Software Agent from a new NE
software version (in this case, a Software Agent must be already installed on the NE).
This procedure (when proposed) should be performed as the first step of a NE software
upgrade (before the download procedure). It is explained in “Upgrading a Software Agent
from NE software version” (p. 7-7)

Installing/upgrading a Software Agent from 1360 COM

repository
Overview
You can install or upgrade a Software Agent from a repository of the Alcatel-Lucent 1360
COM to the NE. Note that for LCP CPSB sub-Network platform NEs, the recommended
procedure to upgrade a software agent must be performed from a NE version (see
“Upgrading a Software Agent from NE software version” (p. 7-7)).

Prerequisite(s)
Ensure that:
• The Network Management window is open.
• The module Job Management is loaded (by using Load modules in the View menu in
Network Management window).
• The NE supports the dynamic software management from 1360 COM (see “Managed
NEs” (p. 1-5)).
• The NE is supervised by the 1360 COM, in a reachable communication state.
• The software state of the NE must be idle. This information appears in the Network
Information tab or in the Detailed Software Information window (see “Displaying
NE detailed software information” (p. 6-3)).
• Both NE type Site parameters OAM Software Upgrade agent path on NE (path where
the agent must be located on the NE) and OAM Software Upgrade agent path on
1360 COM (default 1360 COM path for the agent to download) are not empty. For
more information about Site parameters, see the Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM Platform
Management Operator guide, 255-400-454.

Upgrading a Software Agent from NE software version

Overview
The operator could have the possibility to upgrade a NE Software Agent from a new NE
software version. This procedure (when proposed) should be performed as the first step of
a NE software upgrade (before the download procedure).
This is the recommended procedure for LCP CPSB sub-Network platform NEs.
Starting in COM 3.0, 1360 COM is a supported software agent. In 1360 COM 3.0 and
later, the OAM agent is already installed on the COM. You will be able to perform an SU
from COM to COM in 3.0.x and later versions. You cannot perform an SU from a COM
R3.x to a COM R2.x, which does not have an OAM agent.

• NE type Site parameters OAM Software Upgrade agent path on NE is not empty. For
more information about Site parameters, see the Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM Platform
Management Operator guide, 255-400-454.
• A Software Agent already exists on the NE (it could have been previously installed
manually by NE team or through the Alcatel-Lucent 1360 COM from a 1360 COM
repository). Moreover, the software agent must contain the definition of the install
agent action.
• The new software version is already installed on the Software Server (the Software
Server can be configured for each NE type through Platform Management. See
“Software Server management” (p. 2-14) and Appendix C, “Installing a NE software
version on the 1360 COM”).
• The Software repository directory of the concerned NE type on the Software Server is
configured in platform management, (tab COM configuration)

Software upgrade action

Executing a software upgrade action

Overview
A software upgrade action is a single action that participates in the software upgrade of
one NE. For NEs with dynamic Software Upgrade management, the actions (called
software upgrade actions) have the particularity to be entirely linked to the NE technical
environment and vocabulary.
For example:
• The "Commit" action is a LCP subnetwork action equivalent to the "validate" action
of a static software upgrade management NE.
• An action for one NE could also not exist or have no significance for another NE.
• In the same way, a single action for one NE could be equivalent to several actions that
would be launched successively for another NE.
To have detailed knowledge of each software upgrade action offered by the NE through
1360 COM, see NE related documents (for example, see LCP subnetwork
documentation).

Executing a parallel action (such as, halt action)

Overview
Parallel actions are actions that:
• Are enabled only when one software upgrade action is running on the NE
• Involves this running action
• Have usually an impact on the behavior of this running action
Typically, actions such as 'Abort', 'Halt', 'Pause' are parallel actions.
As in the previous section, “Executing a software upgrade action” (p. 7-18) (software
upgrade actions), name, definition, and availability of such actions are strictly linked to
the NE implementation. It is, consequently, highly recommended to consult NE
documentation to obtain more details on the NE software upgrade.
