Obeying Jesus Christ

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as 
you would obey Christ. (Ephesians 6:6) 

As we live in a “me‐centred” generation, obedience to Christ is not a theme that is popular 
in churches today. For instance, the worship songs that are produced nowadays usually 
contain the words “love” and “grace”, but can you think of a song that contains “obey” in it?  

Nonetheless, obeying Christ is a very central theme in the gospel, as we see from the 
following scripture:  

 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the 
obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake. (Romans 1:5; NIV) 

 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the 
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I 
have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” 
(Matthew 28:19‐20) 

Now, before we became believers, we obeyed our sinful natures: 

 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 
(Romans 6:12) 

 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you 
are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to 
death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? (Romans 6:16) 

We cannot say we love Christ if we disobey his commands: 

 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. (2 John 1:6a) 

 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love 
them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does 
not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they 
belong to the Father who sent me. (John 14:23‐24) 

 But those who obey God's word truly show how completely they love him. That is 
how we know we are living in him. (1 John 2:5)

Indeed, it is impossible for one to be saved unless one is obedient to Christ: 

 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” (Luke 
11:28) 
  Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.” At this they 
exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon‐possessed! Abraham died and so did 
the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. Are 
you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you 
think you are?” (John 8:51‐53) 

 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord 
Jesus. (2 Thessalonians 1:8) 

 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey 
him (Hebrews 5:9) 

 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, 
what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? (1 Peter 
4:17) 

Many people falsely assume that they are saved, because they have joined a church or 
because they have said a sinner’s prayer. Indeed, these are important, but at the same time, 
it is important for a person to obey Jesus Christ for the rest of his/her life, if he/she wishes 
to be saved from the penalty of hell.
