TILOS – Basic Training

1 Creating TILOS project files / template concept

Goals
Apply a template file as a pre-formatted example
Understand the differences of the file extensions
Use drop-down lists
Be aware of the project settings

1.1 Creating a new project

TILOS uses specific files for data storage. A TILOS file always has the extension .hsp. Additionally,
temporary data files with the extensions .hsw and .log are used.
To create a new project, use a template file. Template files contain definitions of calendars, objects,
libraries, graphic styles lines etc., which you can use in the new project. Using templates with predefined
objects saves working time to create these new objects. Template files have the extension .hst. Please
refer to Session 5 “Creating and using task templates”.

Start TILOS from Start – Programs – TILOS7 – TILOS7.

Open the menu File – New... to create a new project.

Select ‘TILOS Template.hst’.

Click OK.
The following samples are based on Tilos Template. Recognize the user interface in the background.
Drop-down lists indicate library items.

Enter Project name.

Enter Start and End (distance). Since the contract section is from 0 – 4000, you add extra
space for graphical editing.

Enter Start and End date. The dialog always prompts today's dates. In order to have the same
results as in the sample data, set the start date to 01/03/2010 and the end date to 22/07/2010.

Select 5-day calendar (Mo-Fr 8h).

Session 1: Creating TILOS project files / template concept

Click Apply. All views and sub-projects are adjusted to the specified coordinates. (If you press
Skip, the specified data is ignored and the default settings defined in the template are applied).

Enter a file name and select the folder for the new project.

Open the menu Tools – Options to modify the project settings.

1.2 Applied items of Tilos Template

Double-click in TILOS Explorer the relevant item to be modified or only displayed.

1.2.1 Distance unit

The format of the distance-related unit can be defined in the dialog displayed below:

1.2.2 Time unit

The format of the time-related unit can be defined in the dialog displayed below:

1.2.3 5-days per week calendar

This is a 5-day calendar with 8 working hours for every work day and with weekends off work.
TILOS – Basic Training

2 Understanding and using the graphical user interface

(GUI)
Goals
Become familiar with TILOS Explorer, the working area, the tool bars and the menu items
Get an impression of the hierarchical structure in the libraries
Organize the daily work
Understand that the whole plan is displayed in one window
Recognize the properties of the selected object
TILOS Explorer Main Toolbar
Preset Toolbar

Insert Object Toolbar Details Toolbar Working Area

2.1 TILOS Explorer

The TILOS Explorer is organized as a structured tree comparable to Windows explorer. It controls the
working area. Only if the Explorer has the focus, new items may be added. This is indicated by a frame
in the item’s background. The following items are available in the structure:

2.1.1 Views
These are the views you might create for the project file. A view consists of cells containing tasks,
graphics, rulers and diagrams (refer to Session 8 “Layout and cell concept”).

2.1.2 Gantt Charts

Gantt charts are used to monitor the project in relation to the time or distance axis. Gantt charts can be
embedded into a cell of any view, but can also be shown as a separate chart. One Gantt chart
represents one or more sub-projects inside the current file. You can display a Gantt Chart in a Grouped
or Not grouped Mode.

2.1.3 Sub-Projects
In this folder you may arrange individual construction work or planning phases.

2.1.4 Library
All elements in the project are only held once but can be assigned multiple times to objects. Creation,
modification and optimization is accelerated. A double click on an element in the TILOS Explorer
displays the attributes of this object in the Working Area. The focus is then on the Working Area.
Session 2: Understanding and using the graphical user interface (GUI)

2.2 Working area

In the Working Area you will perform operations on plans and data. To open a new window, use the
menu command Window – New Window.

Generally, the Working Window should present one maximized window. If more windows are
opened:

- organize them with the menu command Window – Cascade.

- switch between windows using Window – 1...n (Alt + F plus the number).

Closing the last window closes the file.

If there is an active view in the Working Area, you may divide the window partially so that you are able
to work with different parts of the plan. In this way, you are able to view the rulers and distance
graphics as well as the schedule.

Each part has its own horizontal and vertical scrollbars.

To obtain a maximum-sized view of the plan, you may minimize the Explorer and the Details Toolbar
clicking ; the button on the right closes the window – you may restore the closed window
with the menu item: View – Toolbars – Details Toolbar (Ctrl + Q).

2.3 Toolbars
You may place the tool bars at any position on the screen. Press CTRL+Shift and click on the header
and drag it into the desired position. Appropriate docking positions are figured with graphical symbols.
Restore closed dialogs with the menu command View – Toolbars - Reset all toolbars.

2.3.1 Main Toolbar

Besides general functions like New, Open and Save File it provides a selection of the latest activated
object selected in the TILOS Explorer. This is not refreshed when you switch between individual windows
clicking .

2.3.2 Preset Toolbar

It has 3 functions:

If you create a new object, you may set its default values.

If you insert a task, then you may select a task template.

If you select a task, you may control and change its major data like Name and Coordinates.

2.3.3 Insert Toolbar

Click the corresponding icons to insert new objects in a current view (refer to Session 3.1 “Creating new
objects”).

2.3.4 Details Toolbar

It shows the properties of an object selected in the Working Area.

Click to recalculate the tasks’ time data.

If tasks are very close to one another, the neighboring tasks may get linked to one another when
dropping link end with the mouse. In this case, check the links predecessor and successor by
selecting the link and check its attributes in the Details Toolbar.

7.2 Link properties

Select the link. Its properties are given on the Details Toolbar.

Link category allows assigning specific shapes and colors to the link. You may also exclude
tasks from rescheduling.

Calculate lag by provides automatic calculation based on time or distance settings.

Synchronize successor distance provides calculation of the distance coordinates of the

successor based on those from the predecessor. Moreover, start and end can be completely
synchronized.
Session 7: Linking tasks and rescheduling

Select a linked task.

Select the Links & Constraints tab.

Use Constraints when tasks must start or finish on a specific date. Network logic alone cannot
reflect all project situations. Sometimes a task must be accomplished according to specific dates
rather than on dates determined by other tass in the project.

Double-click in TILOS Explorer Sub-Projects – Main to display the list with existing sub projects.

Select the Task links tab.

Unlinked tasks do not change their coordinates applying the rescheduling. They only interact
with the report date.

7.3 Exercise

Session 8: Layout and cell concept

8 Layout and cell concept

Goals
Understand the cell as a kind of container
Notice that a cell system consisting of several columns and rows is defined as view
Remember that insertion of objects depends on the cell type
Know how to display the relationship between master and reference cells

8.1 Introduction
A layout is a customizable view of project information. To customize a layout to meet specific needs, you
can choose from a wide range of project information, columns, colors, fonts, and task groupings, and you
can display these data in separate views. The view is organised in a cell system. The cell system may be
sized free like in Excel by changing row and column size. This can be done using the mouse by
dragging the little triangles in the rulers or with the View tab entering row or column size.

The size may be entered in cm or inches. This may be changed in the menu Tools – Options, tab
Project.
To create new rows or columns, use the View tab on the Details Toolbar (visible, when you have a cell
selected), select a row or column and press . A new row after the selected line is inserted. Column
and row ‘0’ signify the border that cannot be removed.
Alternatively, you may insert rows and columns by selecting a cell and use the menu Cells or use Cell
Organisation in the View Toolbar. The new item is inserted after the selected one. If you want to insert
a row or column at the beginning of the cell system, select the border cell.

8.2 Cell settings

The cell defines the view to the data. There are 5 different cell types:

Time Distance cell: This cell type is used to show a Time Distance diagram. The drop-down list Cell
content provides all sub-projects.

Gantt Chart Cell: This cell type is used to show project data as a Gantt chart within a view. The drop-
down list Cell content is per default inactive. Click to select the Sub-Project. The axis shows
TIME in Gantt chart manner.

Location Gantt Chart Cell: This cell type is used to show project data as a bar chart within a view.
The drop-down list Cell content is per default inactive. Click to select the Sub-Project. The axis
shows LOCATION.

Distance Cell: This cell type is used to show distance-related data only where no time information
applies such as distance sketches, diagrams or scales. The drop-down list Cell content shows only
distance graphics. They are similar to sub-projects but they have no time axis and can only store
graphical objects inside, but no tasks.
TILOS – Basic Training

Time Cell: This cell type is used to show time-related data only where no distance information
applies, such as diagrams or scales. The drop-down list Cell content shows only time graphics. They
are similar to sub-projects, but they have no distance axis and can only store graphical objects inside,
but no tasks.

Graphic Cell: This cell type is used to show graphic data only where no time and distance
information applies, such as company logos and stamps in border cells. The drop-down list Cell
content shows only graphics. They are similar to sub-projects, but they have no distance and time
axis and can only store graphical objects inside, but no tasks.

8.3 View range

For each cell, you may set individually the visible area of the project in the Cell Settings tab:

The scale is calculated based on the cell width and the applied cell ranges.
If you have a complex cell system and modify the range of the master Time Distance cell (see next
chapter), then you also need to adjust the surrounding cells – this may result in a time-extensive
modification of the cell ranges.

8.4 Master cell concept

If you assign a cell being a master cell then the coordinates are automatically adjusted, in case the
coordinates from the master cell are changed. The relation to the master cell synchronises the visible
time and distance range shown in the time and distance cell. Otherwise, you need always to adjust this
manually. For the time cell displayed below, the time ranges may no longer be adjusted since they are
controlled by the master cell.

Click Show View Map in the View Toolbar to display the reference map.

The arrows signify that this cell has been assigned to a master cell. The master cell is the cell where the
arrow ends.
Session 9: Creating own views and cell systems

9 Creating own views and cell systems

Goal
Use different views for individual purposes

9.1 Introduction
In TILOS, planning is independent from presentation. One project may contain different views: days
planning mode vs. hours planning mode or partial views for selected distance sections. The system‘s
flexibility is practically unlimited.

Task lines are automatically broken on weekends and holidays (no work) since no work means no
progress in distance scale. This might be changed using the display settings for the cell.

Snapping in distance can be based on a constant value but also on grid lines. Settings can be
changed in the menu Tools – Options, tab Snapping.

9.2 Exercise
In this exercise, we create a new view to show the project data in a different way as in the view used in
the sessions before.
