Playing Sega Swirl:

SEGA Swirl Rules and Instructions

======================================================

General Gameplay and Game Rules

*******************************
This document has been created to help users learn how to play SEGA Swirl.
Most of the following information can also be found online at

http://www.SegaSwirl.com/instructions.htm

or by leaving SEGA Swirl idle for 30 seconds on the Mode Select Screen
(do not move the mouse and one of several self-running demos will
automatically start).

The goal of the game is to align Swirls of the same color to make bigger
combos. You can take out any number of Swirls, but you receive a penalty
for taking out one Swirl by itself (also known as a Single). Swirls of
the same color connect up, down, left, and right (but not diagonally).
*******************************

SEGA Swirl contains several different game modes. Users can play by themselves,
with up to four players, and over email (against PC, SEGA Dreamcast, and CPU
opponents). Players can also submit their high scores to be posted online.

Level Mode / Level Challenge

*******************************
In Level Mode, users attempt to satisfy all of the requirements in order to
qualify for the next level. These requirements include:

1) Largest Combo: The largest number of Swirls that are removed in one move at
any point during the current level.

2) Number of Singles: A swirl that is not connected to any other swirls of the
same color is called a "Single". You can remove Singles at any time, but
there is a -100 point penalty for each Single that is removed. To satisfy
this requirement, the user can only remove the number of Singles specified
(or less). If the user removes all of the Swirls in the current level without
removing any Singles, their score for the current level will be doubled.

3) Big Column Bonus: Whenever a user removes all of the remaining swirls from a
column, they receive a Column Bonus. The more columns that can be removed in
a single move, the larger the Column Bonus. If the Big Column Bonus
requirement for a level is 3, the user must remove 3 Columns in a single move
at some point within that level to satisfy this requirement.

4) Total Combos: Each time you remove a group of swirls (of any size) this
counts as a Combo. To satisfy this requirement, you must do less moves than
the number of combos allowed. This requirement is almost impossible not to
satisfy and has been included for future support and additional levels.

5) Score: This requirement is the total points that the user has scored for the
current level. This includes points for combos, column bonuses and penalty
points for Singles. The SEGA Dreamcast version also includes Time Bonus for
Timed Modes of Level Challenge and Single Game Challenge (Practice Mode).
Once again, if the user removes all of the Swirls in the current level
without removing any Singles, their score for the current level will be
doubled.

6) Time: The SEGA Dreamcast version of the game includes Timed and Untimed
options for both Level Challenge and Single Game Challenge. In the Timed
Modes, the user is given 120 seconds to remove all of the Swirls If the user
removes all of the Swirls before the time runs out, they are given a 50 point
bonus for every second remaining on the clock. If the time runs out before
the user completes the current level, they fail to satisfy this option and
will lose the current level. The points earned during the time bonus are
added to the overall score for the level and can help the user to satisfy the
score requirement. This requirement is only included in the SEGA Dreamcast
version of SEGA Swirl.
*******************************

Practice Mode
*******************************
The gameplay is very similar to Level Mode except the game is complete after all
of the Swirls have been removed. If the user removes all of the Swirls without
removing any Singles in a Practice Mode game, their score for that game will be
doubled.
*******************************

Versus Mode
*******************************
In Versus Mode, two to four players can compete in a head-to-head challenge where
each player is trying to have the most points at the end of the game.

1) Each player can be a human or computer opponent and is designated a color:

Player 1 is Orange, Player 2 is Blue, Player 3 is Purple, and Player 4 is
Green.
2) Swirls of your own color are worth twice as much for you. If Player 1 does a
combo of 3 blue swirls, it is worth 20 points, but a combo of 3 orange swirls
is worth 40 points to player 1. Watch out for singles of your own color.
Since Singles are worth -100 points, Singles of your own color are worth -200
points!!

3) When all of the Swirls of your color have been removed, you are knocked out
of the game. Sometimes it is good to get knocked out of the game, other times
you want to try to stay in as long as possible!

4) When all of the players have been knocked out, the game is finished.
*******************************

Swirl Email Mode

*******************************
The gameplay is very similar to Versus Mode except each turn is sent over email.
PC and SEGA Dreamcast users can play head-to-head with up to four players in a
Swirl Email Game.

We are currently working out some compatibility issues with certain email
programs and hope to fix known compatibility issues with AOL and other email
programs.

AOL and Lotus Notes users should download a free email program from the web and
then set that email program as the default mail client.
*******************************

Split Screen Challenge

******************************
This mode is only currently available in the SEGA Dreamcast version of SEGA
Swirl.

1) Gameplay is real-time, not turn-based. This makes action fast and furious,
although the fastest person is not always the player with the highest score!!

2) Users play to until one of the players reaches the score designated at the
beginning of the game. Games can be from 3000 points up to 25,000 points.

3) Each player has their own quarter of the screen. Two to four players can play
with each player being designated a color, just like Versus Mode and Email
Mode: Player 1 is Orange, Player 2 is Blue, Player 3 is Purple, and Player 4
is Green. Combos of your own color are worth double.

4) When any player removes all of the Swirls of any color from their quarter of
the screen, all of the remaining swirls of the same color are automatically
removed from the other players screens with no points for these swirls.

5) Once all of the Swirls have been removed, new boards instantly appear and
gameplay continues until one of the players reaches the desired score.
