PAPER CLIP
Paper clips were first patented in 1867,
RESEARCH
and from then on individual companies
patented their own, different designs
for paper clips in order to compete. As a
result, hundreds of patented steel wire
paper clips already exist. In order to
redesign the paper clip, we needed to
consider altering the form of the paperclip,
rather than the pre-existing function. Steel
wire is still the most reasonable material
for fabrication.

DUST PAN AND BRUSH
Most dustpans on the market today solve
several pre-existing problems: holding dust in
the pan, preventing dust from being stuck in
the bristles, and of course getting dust into
the pan. From experience, we determined that
one issue is also the line of dust left behind
after someone is done sweeping. We based our
research on whether there are dustpans and

brushes on the market that solve the issue of
the fine dust left behind. Most brooms on the
market do not come with attachments that
solve the issue, other than mop and broom
combinations.

POWER DRILL
The first step in our research on power drills was to
understand the innerworkings and neccessary functional
RESEARCH
elements of power drills. The diagram below displays the
basic elements of power drills, including the motor, gearbox,
clutch, and chuck. http://toolsinaction.com/history-of-the-drill/

Understanding the basics

of a power drill, our team
was able to focus on the
issues with drills on the
market in order to create
our own solution. In wood
worker Jimmy Diresta’s
videos, he creates a
scrap wood attachment
to create a flat top to his
rounded power drill.
In tandom with a jig he created, Diresta then

is able to drill a completely straight pocket
hole. After conducting research amongst her
coworkers who also specialize in contract
woodworking, Natalie discerned that the
handles of drills on the market were less
comfortable, or ergonomic, as her coworkers
wished. Combining the complaints of both
parties, our team decided to design our drill
with level sides in order to make drilling
straight holes easier as well as creating a
more comfortable grip for the user.

Diresta Advice on Tools

DEFINE PAPER CLIP
Our team came
together and
compared
sketches,
concepts and
solutions to the
problems that
we came up
with during our
research process.
We narrowed
down the ideas
based on which
answered the
problem best.
DUST PAN AND BRUSH
POWER DRILL

Though the idea of a drill

depth gauge is attractive, drill
bits come in predetermined
DEFINE
lengths, and there have been
drills designed that already
solve that problem. The
ergonomic handle and flat
sides are the aspects of the
sketches our team focused
on.

PAPER CLIP
The final redesign for
the paper clip is to
DEVELOP
create a clip that holds
multiple groups of paper.
Ideally, it is marketed
towards educators,
office settings, and
students. The paper clip
is still made of aluminum
wire, but has spaces
for multiple groups of
paper for organization of
information.
SHAPING PARTS
Using needle nose plyers, our team shaped the paper clip in a
series of right angle bends. The clip stacks on itself, and will allow
for the organization of multiple stacks of paper without the use of
multip paperclips or staples. The paperclip is make of aluminum
wire.
DUST PAN AND BRUSH
The problem we chose
to solve in dust pans
and brushes is that most
DEVELOP
pans leave a line of fine
dust behind. To remedy
this issue, we attached a
removable and washable
foam pad to the top of
the brush handle for easy
cleaning of remaining dust
or grime. The model is
made of insulation foam
and then painted, the
bristles are natural wheat
fibers.
POWER DRILL
Our power drill is
level on the top and
DEVELOP
square on both sides,
allowing users to brace
it against a workbench
or jig to more easily drill
straight holes. Along
with increased stability,
the drill also has an
ergonomic handle. The
model is made out of
insulation foam and
painted.
