Govt approves more funds for road building in Xaysomboun

“Previously, the government was paying
the companies 9 billion kip annually,
which is a very small amount. This year
the government has allocated 60 billion
kip to pay the contractors, which should
enable them to speed up their work.”
The government plans to pay the
companies over a period of six years.
The first road connects the provincial capital Anouvong to Naotay village in Thathom district over a distance of
30km. This road is now 90 percent complete.
The second road links Anouvong district to the Thavieng area in Thathom district over a distance of 50km, and
is currently 60 percent complete.
The third road links Nayone village in Anouvong district to Longchaeng district over a distance of 40km. This
road is now 55 percent complete.
The three roads will have a double layer of surfacing.
The government’s monthly meeting last month chaired by Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith gave the go-
ahead for the continued construction of the three roads.
The government has stressed the significance of these roads for socio-economic development and poverty
reduction programmes in Xaysomboun.
Without paved roads, it is difficult for the authorities to develop the province given that roads are the life blood
in helping communities to boost production and transport their crops to markets. Xaysomboun province was
established several years ago and is located 220km from Vientiane, about four hours drive. The province can
be reached by travelling to the Thabok area in Thaphabath district of Borikhamxay province along Road No.13
South and then branching off to Xaysomboun.
With a population of more than 81,000, the province comprises the five districts of Hom, Longxan, Anouvong,
